ENDNOTE: Drinking water — a “right”?

http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=7048

UN: Access to drinking water is a human right
July 30, 2010

*** begin quote ***

By a 121-0 vote, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution stating that access to drinking water and sanitation is a human right. The United States and 40 other nations abstained.

*** end quote ***

Argh!

If it’s a “right”, then who has the “duty to pay for it”?

I can say “pink elephant”, but that doesn’t mean it exists.

This grand stair connects three stories of Manhattan College’s main building, connecting floors adjacent to a section enclosing what was once an exterior wall of the 19th century building.

The stair is made of painted steel, with steel and stainless steel handrails.

JEMAIL: Lawrence, Richard (MC1968) looking Alan Derry [MC1968]

Good Afternoon F. John,

I am trying to locate one of our classmates, Alan Derry, class of ’68. I am trying to contact Al about a 50th grammar school reunion that we are having on Sept. 25. Searching the JJ archives, I see that his e-mail bounced back in Feb. 2000: “@akron.wnyric.org”.

I also tried “@newpaltz.k12.ny.us” which did not bounce but got no reply. This appears to be a school district e-mail address so it might be dormant for the summer. Snail mail to Alan Derry, 189 DuBois Road, New Paltz, NY 12561 was returned as undeliverable.

Since the time frame is rather short, any information about Al from JJ subscribers can be sent to my IEEE e-mail alias: Richard_Lawrence@ieee.org Yes, that e-mail address is for publication and just to avoid to F. John harangue about “owning your e-mail address” the IEEE alias is spam scanned and then forwarded to a domain name that I own.

Thanks for your assistance and best regards,
Rich

JHQ: MC ChemE win AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition

Chemical Engineering Students From Manhattan College Awarded First Place At AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – A team of eight future chemical engineers, rising juniors and seniors from Manhattan College, demonstrated their skills in building a chemically powered automobile at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Chem-E-Car Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference and received a first place finish. The regional conference was held at Johns Hopkins University, and Manhattan College will compete in the national competition in Salt Lake City in November.

This year’s AIChE Chem-E-Car Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference reached its highest attendance with 250 undergraduate student participants from 22 Eastern region colleges and universities. Student teams faced the task of designing and constructing a chemically powered automobile, the battery and stopping mechanism. The team spent several weeks prior to the event calibrating their car to address any distance and load that may be assigned. More specifically, the exact distance the vehicle is required to travel (between 50 and 100 feet) and the load it is to carry (between 0 and 100 grams) are not revealed until one hour before the competition begins.

“The Chem-E Car competition is an opportunity for chemical engineering programs from different schools to compete on the same playing field,” said James Patrick Abulencia, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemical engineering. “It is quite an honor for our students to be competing with peer groups such as Cornell, Cooper Union and Johns Hopkins, and I am proud of their outstanding achievements.”

Bucknell University, Cornell University, Drexel University and The Cooper Union also finished in the top five.
