CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) summarizes the Park 51 Project

201008260921.jpg

John: Here’s my latest political cartoon, on the subject of President Obama’s firm support for the “Ground Zero” Mosque in downtown Manhattan (that is, before he sort of qualified his support through a spokesman the very next day). I’d like to clear up a couple of misunderstandings on this issue. Supporters of the project claim that it’s not at Ground Zero and it’s not a mosque.

First of all, while the location is not part of the World Trade Center site, the present building on the site is one of the buildings damaged in the 9/11attack and subsequently condemned. I would say that puts it AT Ground Zero. Also, while the project’s promoter, Imam Feisal Rauf, tells American news media that it’s a community center with prayer space, but “not a mosque”, he repeatedly tells European and Middle Eastern news outlets that it IS a mosque.

Also, to grasp the significance of the location, you have to look at where conquering Muslims throughout history built their mosques. In Jerusalem, they built the Dome of the Rock smack dab in the middle of Temple Mount, the location of the Jewish Temple. In Egypt, they also built mosques on the site of old Egyptian temples. In Constantinople (now Istanbul), they seized the world’s largest Christian Church and turned it into a mosque.

The significance of the proposed mosque’s location would be understood by anyone in the Muslim world. Its purpose is not to promote interfaith ecumenical understanding. It’s clearly intended as a celebration of the success of the 9/11 attack on America.

[JR: Have to agree that you hit the nail on the head. As a little L libertarian, I think we better wise up. It's a dangerous world out there, and wishing isn't going to make it any less so! We have to be like Switzerland when it comes to foreign policy -- MYOB and like the old USSR or the Mafia on defense -- you mess with me, I break your legs. Argh!]

Turkish Cultural Center aims to bridge East and West

Neither man wanted to get into a debate about the hot-button issue of an Islamic center and mosque proposed to be built two blocks from ground zero in Lower Manhattan.

“I don’t think it’s necessary to have a mosque there. It could be just a cultural center,” said Ucan, 31, who came to the U.S. in 2001 and earned a master’s degree in computer engineering at Manhattan College. He worked at the Turkish Cultural Center in New York City before being hired in Albany last August. He and his wife, Ozgul, have a 2-year-old daughter, Fatma, and live in Troy.

“I hope people learn to separate Muslims from terrorists,” Ucan said. “A true Muslim cannot be a terrorist. Most of our American friends understand that difference, hopefully.”

*** and ***

Neither Can nor Ucan wanted to engage in a discussion of sensitive and controversial issues pertaining to Turkey. Those include the Armenian genocide of 1915, which included the massacre and forced deportation of more than 1 million Armenians living in Turkey. There is also a violent history with ethnic Kurds living in Turkey and Turkey’s strained relationship with Israel.

“We don’t want to get into arguments over those matters,” Ucan said. “I can’t stress enough that we’re not a political or a religious organization. Our focus is strictly cultural. We want to promote understanding of Turkish culture. The Capital Region has given us many opportunities. Now, it’s time for us to give something back.”

JHQ: USNR MC “One Of America’s Best”

U.S. News & World Report Recognizes Manhattan College As One Of America’s Best Colleges

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College prides itself on being one of the best institutions in the country, and the College was recognized for just that in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges” survey. Manhattan topped the list as the No. 17 regional university in the North for the second year in a row. In addition, Manhattan College’s chemical engineering program was selected as the fifth best in the nation — a standout in an already top-ranking engineering school. The annual survey will be published in the September magazine on Aug. 31 and the 2011 guidebook, is available at newsstands on Aug. 24.

“This year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings continue to place Manhattan College among the very best colleges of its kind. The overall ranking, combined with the national recognition of our strength in engineering, recognizes our commitment to academic excellence across all five of our schools,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College.

Led by the chemical engineering department, Manhattan College’s renowned school of engineering received an overall ranking and tied for 38 out of 190 engineering schools that offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees. U.S. News ranks undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET, Inc. (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

Manhattan College not only ranked 17 out of the 126 best regional universities in the North, but also the College attained additional recognition in economic diversity. Among all of the schools surveyed in the regional universities category, Manhattan College was listed as one of the top-ranked schools for economic diversity due to a significant amount of undergraduates receiving federal Pell grants for low-income students.

“Manhattan College has long been committed to providing an excellent educational experience for students from widely various backgrounds; the economic diversity of our student body is a great strength in itself, as well as an indication of our fidelity to our mission,” added O’Donnell.

The Best Regional Universities (North) category also includes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but offer few, if any, doctoral programs. The 572 universities in the category are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West – because they tend to draw students mostly from surrounding states.

The 2011 Best Colleges package provides the most thorough examination of how more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools compare on a set of up to 16 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and, for National Universities and National Liberal Art Colleges, “graduation rate performance” and high school counselor ratings of colleges. U.S. News has made some significant changes to the 2011 Best Colleges’ ranking methodology and presentation. For more details on these changes, go to www.usnews.com/collegemeth.
