The Longoria Affair: A story worth listening to
Posted: 5th October 2010
By Jessica DeLugo

*** begin quote ***

The documentary tells the controversial story of Felix Z. Longoria J, a Mexican-American who was drafted and shipped out along with the 27th Infantry Regiment to Luzon, Philippines. He left behind his wife and four-year-old daughter.

While Longoria was out in the Philippines, he was killed in action. Although he died in 1945, his remains were not returned to the United States until 1949.

In his hometown of Three Rivers, Texas, the director of the only funeral town available would not let him be buried because he was Mexican. In addition to this controversy, the only cemetery of Three Rivers was segregated and Longoria had to be buried in the “Mexican” part of the cemetery, which was divided from the “white” section by barbed wire.

[JR: Speechless. How could Americans be so ... stupid. We need to see these lessons to avoid the same prejudices in the future. It a cemetery. Great Brother Jasper's Ghost!!! Are they afraid the residents will sneak over? Dumb, de dumb dumb!]

JBLOGGER: Brown, Lindsay [MC2007] an eco-activist

http://brownlovesgreen.com/about/

About Lindsay Brown

I’m an eco-activist, vegan, eternal optimist and sustainable living expert. After graduating from Manhattan College in 2007, I helped launch healthgifts.com, an eco-friendly gift giving company. I then spent two years at a Boutique Ad Agency in Manhattan, day-dreaming about my real passions, before I co-created www.ecoeastend.com, a site dedicated to a powerful green living movement throughout the Hamptons and Long Island. I’ve also contributed to publications such as Hamptons Cottages & Gardens and Edible East End and I’ve interviewed and developed strong relationships with hundreds of like-minded businesses and individuals. I now proudly work with Edible Manhattan, a beautiful, grassroots publication on their mission to both celebrate and examine the local food culture.

JHQ: Rutgers’ Psychology Professor to Speak 28OCT@1700

Rutgers’ Psychology Professor to Speak at Manhattan

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Rochel Gelman, Ph.D., co-director of the Center for Cognitive Science at Rutgers University and professor of psychology, will visit Manhattan College as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar program. During her two-day visit, Gelman will deliver a lecture entitled Early Cognitive Development and Beyond on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 5:00 p.m. in the Scala Academy Room in Leo Hall, and the event is free and open to the public.

Gelman focused early in her career on finding and demonstrating how preschoolers and even infants were conceptually more competent than assumed by existing theories. As a result, she went on to publish Preschool Pathways to Science, The Child’s Understanding of Number and the article “Language and the Origin of Numerical Concepts” in Science Magazine, as well as articles on both math and science education in Early Childhood Research Quarterly. She also has developed a Science-into-ESL program and preschool exhibits at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia.

Prior to working at Rutgers University, Gelman taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California, Los Angeles. As an established expert in the study of preschoolers, Gelman has received awards from the American Psychological Association (Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award), the Association for Psychological Science (William James Fellow) and the Society for Research in Child Development (Lifetime Contribution to the Study of Child Development). In addition, she is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“The Upsilon of New York chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is pleased to welcome Dr. Gelman to Manhattan College,” said Michael Judge, Ph.D., secretary-treasurer of Manhattan’s chapter, associate professor and acting chair of the biology department. “We are excited by her visit and look forward to stimulating conversations as we continue our tradition of a strong liberal education.”

The Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program makes available each year a dozen or so distinguished scholars who will visit colleges and universities with chapters of Phi Beta Kappa. They spend two days on each campus, meeting informally with students and faculty members, taking part in classroom discussions, and giving a public lecture open to the entire academic community. The purpose of the program is to contribute to the intellectual life of the institution by making possible an exchange of ideas between the visiting scholars and the resident faculty and students. Now entering its 55th year, the Visiting Scholar Program has sent 577 scholars on 4,784 two-day visits since it was established in 1956.

For more information, please contact Michael Judge at (718) 862-7880 or via e-mail at michael.judge@manhattan.edu.

JHQ: Enhances Urban Affairs Program

Manhattan College Enhances Urban Affairs Program with Single Urban Affairs Major

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College’s school of arts now offers an urban affairs major with a more concentrated focus on urban issues and no longer requires students to have a dual major.

“I’m looking forward to building on the past success of urban affairs and expanding into some new areas,” said Cory Blad, director of the urban affairs program and assistant professor of sociology. “In particular, the impact of globalization on urban space and the challenge of urban decline in former manufacturing centers.”

With the major comes an assortment of new courses, including: Street Art & the City; Urban Art and the History of Venice; Power and Conflict; the New York Skyscraper; Police and Society; and Social Class and Inequality. In addition, faculty members from other departments will add classes to count toward the urban affairs major.

Blad is also working to further expand the structure of the urban affairs program by increasing College and community partnerships and interactive public events, and displaying outstanding student contributions. For example, urban affairs students are working with LIFT’s Bronx chapter, which is a national organization designed to help alleviate poverty through support in job searches, résumé construction, tax filing and much more.

“One of the great things about an interdisciplinary program is the opportunity to really expand how you think about cities and urban life in general, and I am hopeful that we can continue to push those boundaries and grow this exciting program,” Blad explained.

Current and future students will still have the option of double majoring and minoring in urban affairs. For more information, please visit http://www.manhattan.edu/academics/arts/urban/index.shtml.
