James Scott
James F. Scott, 86, of Madison, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
He was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Guston, Ky., the son of Walter Lee and Ruth Fontaine Scott. He was raised in Brandenburg, Ky., on the family farm. He was a 1941 graduate of Meade County High School. He served in the Army from Dec. 1, 1942, to April 12, 1946, rising to the rank of staff sergeant serving the 271st Infantry Division Company E, during World War II. He was a graduate of Manhattan College in New York City, N.Y., where he received a law degree. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he received an accounting degree. He began an apprenticeship with Louis Ackerson in Louisville, Ky., and moved to Madison at the age of 29 and began a career in accounting. He owned and operated the Scott & Callicotte Accounting Agency in Madison for 50 years. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Save the Valley and was on the board of directors. He had served on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Madison City Council, the Madison-Jefferson County Library Board and the Historic Board. He donated a library to Ivy Tech Community College. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by one son, Brendan Scott of Indianapolis; two brothers, William Fontaine Scott of McLean, Va., and Jack Jeffers Scott of Elizabethtown, Ky.; one grandson; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Erd Scott, whom he married Sept. 1, 1948, and who died Nov. 1, 2007; his parents; one brother, Walter Scott; and three sisters, Rena Parks, Mary Foote and Jessie Virginia Williams.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.
