JHQ: Wishes You a Happy New Year!

Manhattan College
Wishes You a Happy New Year!

Dear Mr. Reinke,

Manhattan College remains grateful to all of its loyal alumni, parents and friends for their generous support. Your gifts to the annual fund, special events and various scholarships and financial aid programs make possible the many wonderful academic and co-curricular opportunities our students are blessed with today, helping us remain a competitive Lasallian Catholic higher educational choice.

If you have not yet made a gift and would like to do so before December 31, please visit our secure on-line giving link by clicking here. To find out more about other ways to give, visit our website here.

If you have already made a gift this year or this message has crossed with your annual gift, let me take this opportunity to thank you again for helping to make Manhattan the unique College it is.

Thank you for your support of alma mater. I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday and wish you all the best for a happy and healthy new year.

Sincerely,
Tom

Thomas A. McCarthy ’06, M.A. ’10
Assistant Director of Annual Giving

[JR: It seems that the old "Alumni" "LISTSERVE" has been abandoned in favor of a "Constant Contact". That should make email more "manageable". It's unclear how one can get on to it at this time. But, I'm sure that will be corrected after the New Year.]

JEMAIL: O’Connell, Bill (MC1959) prefers “Bill the Elder”

John,

Providing “teachable moments” has been a hallmark of mine for years, so no thanks is necessary for providing you with one. I am always pleased to be of help. As to “presuming” to teach anyone anything, don’t let that bother you. I did it for thirty-seven years at William & Mary with no ill effects. I can’t speak for my students however.

In reference to changing email addresses, I did in fact formerly route everything to my home address via my “forever” email address at W&M, but despite a very large IT department they stopped the connection once without reason or notice. I noted a large drop off in incoming emails and when I contacted the IT people they had no explanation why I had been unceremoniously dropped. As to forever addresses, didn’t our alma mater once offer this service only to drop it without notice? One other reason not to use a forever address is that some of the chat rooms I belong to do not permit replies from other than the primary email address. This prevented me from replying at home so I dropped the forever address when I retired and was no longer emailing from W&M. As an older Liberal Arts man, I doubt that I could set up my own domain name, but thanks for the suggestion.

On a purely personal matter I hope you won’t object if I use “Bill the Elder” (with apologies to Pliny) instead of “Bill the older.” Thanks.

All the best.
Bill the Elder, ’59
Williamsburg, VA

[JR: <1> I guess the IT folks at W&M have a funny definition of "forever". <2> MC offered "@alum.manhattan.edu" with the debacle of Harris and the "Green Book". The old ones still work. They just didn't offer "new" ones. Not sure if you could change the destinations during the period after Harris but before Google. <3> I know there was an offering of ".alumni@manhattan.edu" "forever" addresses in conjunction with those who receive a postal issue on Manhattan Magazine. (I'm not sure what the status of others. I can ask if anyone's is interested.) <4> Domains are trivial. And, cheap. So, (imho), especially for alumni in the workforce or going into that workforce. The trick is to find a professional sounding name you can go a lifetime with. <5> You can call yourself "Bill the Exalted One" as long as you keep reading and participating in Jottings. LOL!]

Thomas More Law Society- Manhattan College

[JR: Unfortunately it reflects badly on MC since all three of the stories on it are spam. Or worse. Guess someone "vomited it up" on Christmas vacation. Probably too much time on their hands due to the snow. Without considering how to keep the site secure and the content clean. Maybe we can get whoever put it up to either "clean it up" or kill it. It certainly doesn't look good. We need to teach students to consider the implications of what they do and "socialize it" before they pull the trigger? This is a "train wreck" that was predictable.]

JNEWS: Benefit given for Kranichfeld, Andrew “Chowder” [MC2008]

Chowder Cup to Raise Money for Former Garnets Hockey Player

A fundraiser will be held today at Playland Ice Casino for a former Garnets hockey player diagnosed with a brain tumor.

By Michael Iachetta | Email the author | December 27, 2010

*** begin quote ***

Even though he has been blind since August, former Rye High School hockey player Andrew (Chowder) Kranichfeld plans to be on hand today at Playland Ice Casino for the first of what promises to become an annual fundraising event called the Chowder Cup.

The Chowder Cup is the latest of several fundraisers thrown around Rye by Kranichfeld’s former high school classmates, fellow Garnets’ hockey players, and friends. The event will take place from 9:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.

The hockey scrimmage and ice skating outing is designed to raise funds for Chowder’s ongoing medical expenses for treatments for a brain tumor. He has experienced a series of tragic events that began last December, shortly after the death of his mother from cancer.

*** and ***

Chowder’s life took a turn earlier this year. He was working as a freelance production assistant on various films and TV shows, looking to land a full-time job after his graduation from Manhattan College and living in the Bronx.

In March, his mother, Karen, died of leukemia after a seven-year battle with the disease. Two days after her death, Chowder began having blurred vision and headaches, he said.

He immediately went to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and cancer, he said. He was put on chemotherapy and steroids after doctors misdiagnosed his condition. The tumor still kept pressing on his optical nerve, causing him to lose his eyesight, he said.

*** and ***

Chowder said he hopes the Chowder Cup becomes an annual tradition, one that will benefit him and others. But for now, he is steadily trying to move on with his life, looking forward to getting a guide dog and fine-tuning his computer skills. Urso said Chowder has taken all his struggles in stride.

“Nobody who knows him is really surprised with how well he is dealing with adversity.”

Dear Mr. Iachetta,

Thanks for a touching news item. I’m interested in Kranichfeld’s Class Year at Manhattan. And, more importantly, how his fellow alums may help or contribute. I’ve quoted your story, with links and credit, on my alumni news blog. And, I signed up for any follow up stories. Well done. It’s a hard subject to write a uplifting story about.

Thanks,

Don’t we all want to be Ebenezer Scrooge?
12/25/2007

*** begin quote ***

We gather tonight to celebrate that when the baby Jesus was born in the barn in Bethlehem, the light of God’s love broke yet again into the world. At Christmas, we pray for God’s light to break specifically into our personal, spiritual darkness.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Jasper Stebbins was nice enough to share a sermon from the Christmas season. (Too long for inclusion, but it's only a click away.) But everyone fails to "love the sinner". And, everyone is so worried about "fixing" him, they miss the "mote in their own eye". Instead of denigrating good old Eb, they should be seeking their own salvation.]

Dear Jasper John,

You really admire and want us to emulate this guy?

You can not be serious and must be pulling my leg.

If I thought you were serious about boiling people who say “Merry Christmas”:

I’d report you to Bill O’Reilly

Don Stebbins

# – # – #

Stebbins, Donald M (MC1961)

[JR: <1> Of course, I'm serious. <2> He's as free as the Gooferment will allow him to be. Pursuing that which makes him happy. Remember "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" or the alternate form "Life, Liberty, and Property". See it's all about "who owns you". Past, Present, and Future. If I own me, (and I have "free will" as some religions tell me I do), then how can I be forced to make choices that you or anyone thinks "are for my own good". <3> Good Old Eb was making his contribution to society; providing accounting services that people wanted and along the way providing employment to Dumb Old Bob. As others have pointed out, Eb must be paying Bob what he's worth since he's still working there. We can debate that Eb might be happier by sharing. But it should be voluntary; not under force or threat there of. <4> Unfortunately, Christmas has been taken over by Big Business and commercialism. It should be a time of "Good Samaritans"; not conspicuous consumption. I'll say Merry when it really means something. <5> BO'R, at least, is honest. Unfortunately, he's not very Libertarian. And, he has a "blind spot" with respect to Obama's birth certificate. I think he's wrong on some issues, but, unlike the "Lame Stream Media", he doesn't do "news" with a hidden bias, like Walter Cronkite.]
