JEMAIL: Jablon, Ken (MC1962) remembers rain on RFK’s MC day

Thanks for coming up with a copy of RFK’s speech. I graduated in 1962 but I have to admit, I don’t remember any of the speech (of course it was almost 49 years ago. I do remember that I thought it was a big deal that the Attorney General of the US (and the President’s brother) was giving the address. It was pouring rain that day, so the commencement was indoors. But there was not enough room in one building for all of the graduates and I was not in the building that RFK delivered the address but heard it on speakers. In reviewing the speech, it was not a great presentation. It wondered around without any central theme. But I have to give him credit (or his staff) for reading the history of the college and referring to a number of incidents . The 159 page document that he alluded to was history of the college that was published in 1953 which was the 100 anniversary of its founding. I received a copy as an incoming freshmen but I certainly did not read the whole thing.

[JR: Hey, you're welcome. But the that's have to go to some unknown Federal employee who scanned it and put it online. I think I see a Big Gooferment Socialist theme, but maybe my tin foil hat is too tight. We'll have to see if any one has a copy of that 159 page history in any form and I can put it on the back lot. I'm trying for the Humane Letters PhD.]

The Half-Court, Game-Winning Buzzer Beater No One Saw
Manhattan College
Manhattan College Buzzer Beater
Marist College

*** begin quote ***

Today is rapidly becoming an extremely exciting day of basketball. You had St. John’s upsetting the third-ranked Duke Blue Devils, the Heat beating the Thunder in one of the most well-played games of the season, and the Celtics and Lakers are currently battling in the Staples Center, which is always great. So it’s no surprise that tiny Manhattan College’s win over Marist got lost in the mix.

Even though the win came on a half-court buzzer beater. Watch video of the most exciting (and improbable) way a game of hoops can end:

[JR: I saw it in one of the game breaks and I still don't believe it.]

JEMAIL: Toner, Mike (MC1972) remembers Birch Cottage

Dear FJohn,

Would you please pass my e-mail info along to Rev. Paul Peck. I remember good times at Birch Cottage – I lived in Ives and then St. Joseph’s Halls my final two years at MC. We kept in touch for some time after MC but then lost touch. I would very much like to be back in touch.

Thanks.

Between seeing the obituaries in my dad’s Manhattan College yearly magazine thing and going to one of his good friend’s funeral, I thought I was done shedding tears over 9/11.

Damn you, Stewart. When I watch you, I feel like I’m just having a discussion with one of my buddies. So when you start to tear up, I start to tear up.

POSITRACTION: A Gift of College Tuition

6th-Grade Class Is Offered A Gift of College Tuition
By Dale Mezzacappa INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

*** begin quote ***

The 112 sixth-grade students and their families sitting in the sweltering auditorium had never before seen the blond woman at the podium. Yet she was promising to change their lives.

*** and ***

“That means,” Weiss repeated, her voice quivering with excitement, “if each and every youngster on this stage graduates from high school with a diploma and is accepted at college or a technical-training school, we’ll pay all costs of tuition. “

“Everything,” she affirmed.

[JR: I'd assume that they've deposited the requisite amount in a trust. 112 * 60k * 4 ≈ 2½ M$. That's a tremendous gift. Stunning. Wish I could afford to do something like that. But, most of us didn't do as well with the talents we were given. Remember the talents in that old book? And, the widow's mite. Humbling? I am.]
