MFOUND: Running in VCP

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/27/cross-country/

Van Cortlandt Park is indeed an unforgettable experience for a young runner. I’ve had the good fortune of running this course many times as a member of the St. Anthony’s High School “Black Wave” (1978-1981) and later while attending Manhattan College (just across Broadway from VCP…!). Some memories: the always epic sprint to the cowpath entrance… the large tree near the entrance to the cowpath that always burned a fiery red during the waning days of fall… climbing the rocks just beneath the top of Cemetary Hill… the sight of a badly bloodied runner from Brooklyn Tech High School who had apparently been run off the path and into a tree on the back hills, but nevertheless continued on and finished his race… and of course, the last half mile to the finish line that always seemed like it would never come…

— John

JNEWS: Bach, Richard [MC1982] Chairman, Downtown San Diego Partnership

Downtown Partnership flexing its lobbying muscle
Nearly $100,000 raised for political action committee as Rick Bach and Kris Michell take the helm
By Roger Showley
Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 2 p.m.

*** begin quote ***

What it does: Promotes downtown, lobbies for downtown redevelopment projects.

Background: Formed in 1993 in a merger of the San Diego Downtown Association-Central City Association, founded in 1952, and San Diegans Inc., founded in 1958.

Membership: 325; dues $500-$10,000

*** and ***

Its 325 mostly corporate members have watched the city’s central business district go from blighted to brilliant over the last 40 years as one megaproject after another has prompted property owners, developers and investors to turn vacant lots into gleaming skyscrapers. In their wake have come 30,000 residents partaking of the urban lifestyle.

*** and ***

Its newly installed chairman, Richard Bach, senior vice president of Turner Construction, and his predecessor, Scott Maloni, have convinced the board that now is the time to form a political action committee. They’ve raised nearly $100,000 as a war chest to back friendly politicians and oppose unwelcomed state and local propositions and laws.

And the organization intends to broaden his membership to the general public, reach out to the suburbs to sell the downtown story and fight for more megaprojects.

“I say what’s good for downtown is good for the entire region,” says Bach, 50, who was born in New York, moved to San Diego in 2003 and lives in Carlsbad. “A dollar spent on downtown has got a ripple effect with the local economy and beyond. Comic-Con comes to the convention and every hotel I the county is booked. That’s a regional impact.”

*** and ***

Richard Bach, chairman, Downtown San Diego Partnership

Personal: Born July 12, 1960, in New Rochelle, N.Y.; moved to San Diego 2003; unmarried; five children; Carlsbad resident.

Education: Manhattan College, majoring in civil engineering

Career: Turner Construction, senior vice president, 1982-present

Hobbies: cooking, travel, old cars

Current book: “Fall of Giants,” by Ken Follett

Most recent movie seen in a theater: “True Grit”

[JR: P.S. I've tried it and you still have to do all the heavy lifting of getting folks to meet with you. It is funny that they don't seem to understand that "manhattan college" isn't unique. But they don't care. It's about catching people.]
