The center also gets help from Lasallian Volunteers, such as Catherine Calogero, who has developed various incentive programs for the students and created a library as part of her work at the center this year. A graduate of Manhattan College with a degree in chemistry, Calogero’s science background has also been beneficial to students who often struggle with homework in that area, Heck said.

JOBIT: Burnham, William Joseph III [MC1962 RIP]

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dailygazette/Obituary.aspx?pid=147966919

WILLIAM JOSEPH BURNHAM III

William Joseph Burnham III, 71, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on January 20, 2011.

Bill was born February 6, 1939 in New York City, son of the late William Joseph Burnham II and Katherine Manion Burnham. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and earned a B.A. at Manhattan College. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy where he led an EOD team at the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island, WA. Upon returning East, Bill and Pat settled in Ballston Spa, the town in which his father was born and grew up, and raised seven children. He had a fulfilling career of almost three decades at General Electric in Schenectady, NY.

In retirement, he devoted himself to his family and his grandchildren, and enjoyed extensive traveling with Pat. For the past ten years he volunteered with Caritas, a respite program, both as an in-home volunteer and board member. In 2010 the organization named him Director Emeritus, honoring his dedication and contributions to the organization. Bill was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish in Ballston Spa, serving as a lector for many years. Bill was an avid gardener, gentleman farmer, a die-hard Mets fan, and he loved nothing better than a good party with family and friends. His life embodied the qualities of a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and faithful friend. A man of generosity and good will, his life will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his brother, Clement P. Burnham, and his brother-in-law, Dr. John Lloyd. Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Coen Burnham; his children, Jennifer Nardacci (Michael) of Arlington, VA, Rebecca Burnham of Saratoga Springs, Julianne Gaynor of Albany, Mary Rose Burnham (Steven) of Saratoga Springs, William Joseph Burnham IV (Mary) of Onancock, VA, Emily Burnham (Fred) of Brooklyn, and Benjamin Burnham (Kristin) of Fairfield, CT; his sisters, Suzanne Gallagher (John) of Ossining, NY, and Kathleen Lloyd (John) of Clinton, NY; nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Burnham home, 28 Columbia Avenue, Ballston Spa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 167 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa. The family requests donations to St. Mary’s Parish and School, 167 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, or Caritas Services, 142 Bay Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801. MFOUND: MC; secularization may now cost it dearly

Just Deserts

*** begin quote ***

Manhattan College, in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, like so many Catholic colleges and universities these days, is embarrassed by its Catholic past and does its best to eschew it. Employees are not required to be remotely religious or even believe in God. Little instruction in Catholicism is required of students, who may spend their entire tenure at the college without ever setting foot into the chapel. The faculty, formerly staffed by the Christian Brothers, was long ago laicized and the college website makes only slight and passing reference to the institution’s Catholic heritage (an on-campus shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes is quaintly referred to as a “religious symbol”) and stresses the college’s “independence.” To put it pithily, Manhattan College “used to be Catholic” (to quote the Preppy Handbook on Georgetown University).

Unfortunately for Manhattan College, however, its proud secularization may now cost it dearly. Adjunct professors, the navvies of academe, have waged a long and bitter campaign to be permitted union elections, an effort strongly resisted by the college administration, which insists the college is a religious institution within the Holy Catholic Church and is thus exempt, unlike its non-religious counterparts, from allowing union elections; indeed, the administration has used a slew of legal tactics to forestall them. Last week the National Labor Relations Board ruled against the college administration and ordered the elections to take place, virtually guaranteeing in the future the administration will have to engage in collective bargaining with the odious American Federation of Teachers, which represents the adjuncts.

I should state I have little sympathy for adjunct professors.

{Extraneous Deleted}

That said, however, I have even less sympathy for Catholic college administrators who, while loudly proclaiming their institutions’ autonomy from Holy Church, her teachings and influence (in order to establish bona-fides with left-wing faculties, including the adjuncts), scurry behind the First Amendment for protection when their immensely profitable workhorses demand a greater piece of the action. The NLRB saw right through this ruse and in its decision states so clearly.

[JR: MC's getting a good roasting in the blogosphere. Guess there is only one question. The following entry can be found in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Elizabeth Knowles, Ed. 5th Ed. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999), p. 224: "I don't care what you say about me, as long as you say something about me, and as long as you spell my name right." Attributed to a newspaperman who wanted some information about Broadway Jones in 1912. Might as well get into people's minds; even if it's not for what we'd like to be remembered as. Have to salvage something.]
