John: I’m very sorry to hear about your wife’s death. I never met her, but she sounds like quite a gal . I’m extremely impressed by her basketball accomplishments. I myself was bad at all sports, but I think I was worse at basketball than any other sport. I had a classmate in high school, Jim Cronin, who was only 5′ 7” but was one of the best basketball players in New York City in the mid-60′s.On rainy days, when we couldn’t go outside at lunchtime, he would entertain us by sinking basketballs through the net from any spot on the court or even the farthest corner of the gym. Just as people watch caricature artists like me draw people and act like we’re magicians (just because nobody does anything with their hands anymore in this post-industrial age), I’ve always been in awe of great basketball players. It sounds like your wife was in that class of athletes, judging from her record. (28 and 1 is about as good as you can get.) I’ve lost a few close friends in the last year and a half (one died of Alzheimer’s), and it’s sad, but I haven’t lost anyone that close to me. I know it must be tough to carry on without her. I’ll keep her (and you) in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Jerry Breen
PS: I got a newToshiba laptop (which I’m still getting the hang of) and I’ll be sending you some new cartoons shortly.
[JR: Thanks, Jerry. 28-1 was the team she coached. Her high school team's record I'm not sure of. I know it was a bundle and at least one. She has the clippings hidden away around here. I expect to see one of her teammates at the wake. I'll ask. One thing I can tell you is that she was very modest about her achievements. I'll be trying to collect some of them on the memorial site. It's my version of a cartoon.]
