[JR: Congrats. I love weddings. Only second to births. And, the Faculty and Staff are the "muscles" on the "bones" of the MC campus. They make Jaspers. Nice to see that some still get "married". A good example to impressionable students. Mozel Tov.]

JEMAIL: Walsh, Kevin (MC1980) instructs on the “general calendar”

A little further info on my classmate’s question:

In the pre-Vatican II calendar, the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle was May 15, the anniversary of his being proclaimed Patron of Christian Teachers.

When the general calendar was reformed after Vatican II, his feast date was moved to April 7, since most saints are commemorated on the day of their death–the day of their entrance into eternal life. It has the rank of Memorial (which gets downgraded to Optional Memorial in Lent–and eliminated when it falls in Holy Week or the Octave of Easter). Hence, we see this commemoration in our missalettes this year for April 7, with the rank of “Optional Memorial”.

However…in the proper calendar of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, this date remains May 15, and it would be a “Proper Solemnity”. (Just like the ‘Optional Memorial” of St. Patrick on March 17 is a “Proper Solemnity” in the Archdiocese of New York.). My guess is that they opted to keep the traditional date to avoid conflicts with Holy Week and the Octave of Easter.

[JR: Wow, that's a message full. Didn't realize it was a PhD level topic. Glad I didn't take all those beating to lean 15 May for no reason at all. Only to have it change. :-) Guess it couldn't be too simple, then us fat old white guy injineers wouldn't have anything left to learn. Thanks.]

POSITRACTION: The Seventeen Evidences of a Lack of Humility

Humility.

A friend posted this on her Facebook page, and it seems too good not to share. Here are some thoughts, then, on humility from the writings of Saint Josemaria Escriva:

The Seventeen Evidences of a Lack of Humility

1. To think that what one says or does is better than what others say or do

*** end quote ***

[JR: Unfortunately, in my self-assessment, I'm "perfect". 17 for 17. A singular negative accomplishment. I remember learning that even a complete rogue serves as an example of what NOT to do. Wonder why that lesson never took. Nor got into my book. Sigh. I'm sure my fellow Jaspers will score much better. And, since the race is not yet over, maybe I can catch up. As can anyone still running! How does one justify "lack of Humility" with Jasper Pride. Don't remember that in ingineering class? Maybe one of the many I cut!]

Boro warms up to nice ice rink: After 50 years, skating facility due in Bronx
BY CORINNE LESTCH DAILY NEWS WRITER
Monday, January 24th 2011, 4:54 PM

*** begin quote ***

This news puts the icing on the winter season for the Bronx.

Locals were thrilled to learn last week that they will have their first public ice skating rink in the borough in 50 years.

Van Cortlandt Park will be the site of the new rink, said Mayor Bloomberg, in one of the few heartwarming items in his State of the City speech.

“In the Bronx, we’ll join with the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy to do something that has been talked about for more than a decade: we’ll turn unused tennis courts into an ice skating rink open all winter long,” Bloomberg said.

*** and ***

The rink will be installed in the park at the intersection of Broadway and Manhattan College Parkway, not far from the site of the last ice skating mecca to grace the Bronx, the Riverdale Ice Skating Rink.

[JR: Ahh, the Socialists are out in full force. Demonstrating what this fat old white guy injineer learned in ecckynomics classes decades ago. Gooferment can't count. Note "unused tennis courts". And rink will added not far from where an old private one closed. It closed presumably because the owner couldn't make an ROI. The Gooferment doesn't worry about that. And, of course, taxes are NOT a factor when the Gooferment demonstrates its benevolence. Nor land costs. So how did the Mayor decide to go into the ice skating biz? How does a capitalistic society "decide" anything? Some "greedy" entrepreneur, seeking profit, pulls together the resources to make it happen. The consumers than vote with their "certificates of appreciation" on it. Does "ice skating" fit in their needs, wants, and desires? In our real life example, the Mayor risks nothing spending the taxpayer's money on something the "local are thrilled about". Will it be unused like the tennis courts? Even if it is used, would people have paid money to use it? That's the ultimate test of "usefulness". One rink has already failed indicates that the "locals" have other priorities. Argh! I hate socialism. All the wasted resources. As well as time and attention. Like the City has resources to waste. Guess I should have skipped that class and played cards. I wouldn't be raving now.]

JEMAIL: Reinke, F. John (MC1968) follows up on one NLRB commenter

[JR: Dr. Mohler commented about MC and "catholic enough". So I've asked him to give equal weight when MC does good.]

Is a Catholic College Really Catholic? Is Baylor Really Baptist?

Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., serves as president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary — the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world.

# # # # # posted 2011-02-18 17:25

Dear Dr. Mohler,

You might want to look at the NY Daily News. It broke a story; not MC public relations.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2011/02/18/2011-02-18_manhattan_college_offers_cambodian_girl_in_need_a_math_scholarship.html#ixzz1EKPA08C5

Where this “not catholic enough” school gives a dirt poor Cambodian math whiz a free ride. Isn’t doing charity, without ringing that publicity gong like a Pharasee, quietly privately, evidence that MC isn’t secular? Maybe it is just a smidgen Catholic enough?

Interesting that the NLRB gets pushed all over the inet. But the quiet works of true charity — a one arm bball center, a poor Cambodian, and all the other “first person from a poor family to go to college” stories get lost. Maybe I’m too close to it, but Jasper do a lot of charitable work because they learned it at their Alama Mater — which isn’t “catholic enough” for the NLRB.

:-)

Perhaps you’ll write about the good stuff too,
