Manhattan College offers Cambodian girl in need a math scholarship

Manhattan College Professor Helene Tyler was teaching an advanced math course in Cambodia last month when a young woman, bright beyond her years, immediately caught her eye.

*** and ***

Thursday, the Riverdale college’s admissions department told Tyler that Tor has been accepted to study mathematics this September.

“Knowing how much she loves to learn, I’m just so excited that she now has \[this\] opportunity,” said a choked-up Tyler.

She immediately sent Tor an email with the good news – even though it was 2:30 a.m. in Cambodia.

*** and ***

Tyler learned that Tor is an avid Jane Austen reader and tennis player. Her parents, though considered middle-class by Cambodian standards, are poor tailors who make traditional wedding outfits.

Since the brutal Khmer Rouge rule ended in the late 1970s, Cambodians have suffered economically and academically. About one-third of the people live below the poverty line and are illiterate.

According to the education minister, Chan Roath, there are only four resident citizens who hold doctorate degrees in mathematics.

Tyler said that although she is excited that Tor will be able to broaden her horizons, the issue of money still looms.

“Now the big task is for \[Manhattan\] to secure the necessary funds through whatever available scholarship resources there are,” she said. “She’d need everything – full tuition, room and board, books, a plane ticket.”

My adventures in Europe.

*** begin quote ***

As a senior at Manhattan College I wanted to do something I have never done before, especially during my last semester. I was given the opportunity to go to Europe, and I toke the offer. At first, I was very nervous and shy on whether I should go or not because the majority of the students that were going knew each other. But overall I am very glad that I decided to go to this trip. I got to experience different cultures and personalities. First we landed in Lisboa, Portugal and stood there for two days. The people in Lisboa are very friendly and welcoming. Their style is somewhat rockish, just picture the movie Grease in moderns days. Afterwards we drove to Spain and explored Serville, Granada, Avila, Madrid, Segovia and Toledo. Now Spain is where the style is at… As soon as I got to Spain all I kept looking for was ZARA. Spain is the motherland of ZARA. But I left Ssain just thinking and loving Bershka and Blanco more than Zara.

JEMAIL: Mangone, Mark (MC1977) call the European Court “european”

Hello John,

The European Court is just being European. This has always been a difference between European and American thinking. European thought has always been that suicide is an illness. American thinking has always been that suicide is a crime. The key is that American thought holds the right to life to be inalienable. This includes that you cannot alienate yourself from that right. If our basic rights to liberty and life were not inalienable, then we could sell ourselves into slavery as well as commit suicide. American thought leans toward inalienable, which is correct. Hopefully, we will not become Europeanized.

Regards,
Mark A. Mangone

[JR: A great way to express it. I'm going to steal that formulation. ... with credit of course. Maybe we can mature in our thinking about end of life decisions. Chronically ill people need to be given what they need to be comfortable; not the plug pulled. Nor a life's savings flushed down a rat hole nursing home. It's very tough. And, when the one-size-fits-all Gooferment "helps", it become a national disgrace. Thanks.]

JEMAIL: Mangone, Mark (MC1977) is stunned that anyone …

Hello John,

I am stunned that anyone would have the audacity to claim that MC is not Catholic enough and to claim that indoctrination is a measure of religious. God gave us free will. So teaching free will is Catholic. I was always proud that theology courses on other religions were truthful and taught by clergy of the other religions, unlike other indoctrination schools that have members of their religion teach lies about other religions. Commitment to truth is Catholic and I am proud of it. Oh no, I am agreeing with John.

On the other hand, I have no problem with unions. If corporations are allowed, which gives that an advantage in dealing with the individual, then labor organizing is acceptable too. And there will be abuses by both and good actions by both.

Regards,
Mark Mangone

[JR: I'm stunned that the Gooferment seeks to set itself up as the arbiter of what is or is not "catholic enough". I'm stunned that anyone would want a "union" as they are currently instantiated. I'm stunned that we allow such illusions as "corporations" at all. But I'm most stunned when we agreed. Next, Jasper Stebbins will agree with me and I'll have to go to an asylum because I'll be sure I've lost all grip on reality. Thanks for the note. I wasn't sure folks would be interested in this. It could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. And, put MC out of business. That would be stunning.]

JHQ: Fairchild, Kimberly (MCfac) welcome alum participation

[Found a "new" survey from MC in my searches. Here's the last email in the thread.]

That’s my new survey. If you’d like to post it on your blog, that would be great. I’d recommend using the following description:

In this psychology study, you will watch a short, randomly selected video of an individual and make decisions and predictions about his/her behavior and emotions. The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete and all responses are strictly anonymous.

I created a new link to the survey for alumni: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/jasperalum

The alumni sample will likely be a bit older than my typical samples, so this new link will help me to analyze their data in comparison to a more college aged sample.

I’d also be happy to give you a summary of the results in a few months after I collect and analyze the data.
