MANHATTAN COLLEGE’S ROBERT J. CHRISTEN PROGRAM WELCOMES HARVARD’S JILL LEPORE
Professor of American history to discuss The Tea Party and the Constitution this April

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Jill Lepore, Ph.D., David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History and chair of the history and literature program at Harvard University, will speak at Manhattan College on Monday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. Presented by the College’s Robert J. Christen Program in Early American History and Culture, the event is free and open to the public.

Lepore will discuss The Tea Party and the Constitution as the speaker for the annual series. A staff writer for The New Yorker, she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for New York Burning: Liberty, Slavery, and Conspiracy in Eighteenth-Century Manhattan. She won the Bancroft Prize for The Name of War: King Philip’s War and the Origins of American Identity.

A member of the executive board of the Society of American Historians, she is a distinguished lecturer of the Organization of American Historians and serves on numerous boards and committees. Next year she will be a guest curator at the Old State House Museum in Boston and a visiting scholar of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Lepore is co-founder of the magazine Common-place. A prolific author, she is currently working on three books: a biography of Jane Mecom, Benjamin Franklin’s sister; a series of essays about how historians write; and a history of American ideas about life and death.

The Christen Program is named in honor of the late Robert J. Christen, a Manhattan College faculty member who served for many years on the Board of Education of the City of New York. For his many contributions to education, the Riverdale Public School 81 is named in his honor.

ADMINISTRIVIA: Another try at alumni email is coming

At last night’s “computer” meeting at MC, I heard that there will another launch of “gmail for alumni”.

I think that the hated “first initial last name dot class year” format is being rethought after a lot of push back. As well as the support requirements and announcement mechanism is also be “retooled”.

Apparently someone is listening, but we’ll see when it gets to “daylight”.

MFOUND: MC Engineering program cited

From Today’s New York Times on Keith Burgess-Jackson from 1 day ago

I was at a program at Manhattan College’s School of Engineering yesterday. The chairman of the civil engineering department said that 78% of the engineering graduates last year found jobs by the summer, while only 9% of the business students did. I suspect that most of those 9% were the accounting majors. People with specialized training will always be in demand.
