At the 2009 World Cup in Prague, Capicchioni met a fellow outsider named Ryan Wheeler. He was from Ohio and played Division II at Manhattan College, clearly not a member of the usual East Coast, Division I elite.

“That was looked down upon,” Wheeler says. “And I knew what it was like to go to Canada and be the American. I was bemoaning this to Ginny in Prague. She says to me between drags of her post-game cigarette (cue the Jersey accent), ‘You know Ryan, I understand everything you’re sayin’.

For Maria, about World Malaria Day

My friend Maria Fenty was in love with the people of Sudan. More than once she trekked there to encourage and serve people in the ravaged south, loving those whose lives were on the line daily. She told me that she hoped to go live there to serve the women and children struggling to survive, whose faith she found contagious, vibrant and thriving.

JEMAIL: McCarthy, Tom (MC2006MCStf) seeks input

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE FACEBOOK NEWS DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM … 2010-04-25

To members of Manhattan College Gaelic Society
From: Tom McCarthy
April 25 at 4:49pm

All,

Hope you’re all doing well and enjoyed your Easter holidays.

I was hoping to receive some input for programming for the 2011-2012 academic year. One such idea was to hold a traditional Irish session with opportunities for performers (musicians/readers). If you’re interested in participating, please e-mail me at thomas.mccarthy@manhattan.edu.

If you have any suggestions for other events (Tenement Museum/Ellis Island/Irish Arts Center/Irish Repertory Theatre/Irish Night/lectures), let me know so we can discuss it with the officers and at upcoming meetings.

Appreciate your help and look forward to seeing you soon. Slainte,

Tom
Advisor, Gaelic Society

MFOUND: Dinter, Paul [MCfac] “why MC is turning its back on Catholic social teaching”

Laboring in Education
April 25, 2011
By Paul Dinter

*** begin quote ***

Such a conscientious observer would, I expect, be wondering why Manhattan College is turning its back on more than 100 years of Catholic social teaching and its recognition that, for individuals to be able to trade their labor fairly, they can and should do so “in solidarity” with their fellows. For without unions, individuals remain outmatched whether they are in the mines, on the assembly line, or in classrooms. One by one, they cannot benefit from the checks and balances that help assure that the “invisible hand” of the market does not ride roughshod over the less powerful.

*** end quote ***

Paul Dinter is adjunct professor of religious studies at Manhattan College.

[JR: I have yet to hear a grievance? Allowing the Gooferment to "regulate" religion is a mistake. And, what does "to stop adjunct faculty from associating as a union to improve their livelihood" mean. Same sex marriage benefits. Abortion insurance coverage. Sorry, but I have NOT heard a real need for a union. Does the administration beat "its" adjuncts for giving too many F's? Or A's? Are they in some way treated unfairly? I'm confused.]
