Paul Richard Wolkenberg
November 10, 1944 – April 14, 2011

Paul Richard Wolkenberg, age 66, passed away at home on Wednesday April 14, 2011. Paul was born November 11, 1944 in Long Beach, California, while his father was fighting in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Paul and his sister, Kathy, were raised by their parents, Herman and Theresa in Middletown, New York.

Always a high achiever, he excelled as a pitcher in baseball and in his school work. His high scores on the New York State regent’s exams earned him a full scholarship to Manhattan College where he earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, graduating at the top of his class and earning entry into the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society. During this period he was part of the Air Force ROTC, having marched twice in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Paul was a devout Catholic.

Traveling to California for an internship with David Packard (Hewlett-Packard) in the burgeoning tech industry in Silicon Valley; his grandfather, promoting Paul’s devotion to high performance automobiles, bought him a 1964½ gold Mustang convertible. Following his undergraduate work, Paul attended graduate school at Carnegie Tech (GSIA -Carnegie-Mellon University) where he received his Master’s in Industrial Administration. While he was in Pittsburgh during his studies, he fell for a beautiful red-headed, Irish, student nurse. Patti and Paul were married on June 10, 1967 and have shared 43 amazing years together.

Paul and Pat spent the next several years in New Jersey and Northern Virginia where Paul worked for Enjay Chemical, Research Analysis Corporation, and the Federal Home Loan Bank. In the early 1970’s, they moved back to Pittsburgh with their young daughter, Beth, and soon after, their son Matt was born. Paul worked in several leadership roles at Mellon Bank, and in 1988, made the bold move to head south to Texas with his family for an opportunity that led to senior leadership positions at American Capital, Van Kampen, Morgan Stanley, and Dean Witter.

Paul embraced every aspect of his life. He was never at a loss for words, nor the energy to try all things new and exciting. This son of New York City turned into a Texas rancher, a redfish angler, and an enthusiast of the Texas country roads. He traveled to Sebring for the races with his son, attended Longhorn football games with his daughter, and spent countless hours exploring the world with his wife, Pat. He was an active board member with Sheltering Arms and Stand Up for Kids.

Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia, daughter Beth and her husband, Alex Delledera, son Matthew and his wife, Brandy, most dear grand-daughter, Isabelle, and grandson on-the-way, his sister, Kathy Harmeling and her sons, DJ and Paul and their families. He is preceded in death by his father and his mother.

The true joy in Paul’s life was his family. The happiness he felt when he was with his extended family, the Wolkenberg’s, Horgan’s, Brisky’s, Delledera’s, and Schadt’s was immeasurable. His life was a gift to all who knew him.

A visitation will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 from 6:00p.m. until 9:00p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 10:30a.m. at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Community Church, 1530 Norwalk Drive Katy, Texas 77450.

Episode 120: The Reform and Renewal of Catholic Education

*** begin quote ***

I’ve waited several years to put all of this together publicly, so today’s episode is the result of much work. In it, I discuss what I have spent my professional life doing: working in education, the last several years in Catholic education. Though there are many good people in Catholic schools, and many excellent priests and bishops supporting authentic Catholic schools, the fact is that as a whole, Catholic education is in crisis. I lay out the diagnosis as well as my solution, pointing to these stories:

{Extraneous Deleted}

* Case in point: the National Labor Relations Board’s decision to refuse religious recognition to Manhattan College because of its secularism

*** end quote ***

[JR: I have to listen to this to mount a defense if needed. Let’s not let the blogosphere or the press use MC as a punching bag. Alma Mater needs defense. Who the {Extraneous Deleted} died and left all these pundits as arbiters of the faith? “You’re Catholic; you’re not; … oops you missed by that much”. Argh!]

# # # # #

[JR: At the 45 minute mark of an hour podcast, he raps MC for not being "truly Catholic". He didn't cite why but I guess MC doesn't measure up to his vision of "what's catholic enough". As fat old white guy injineer, it seemed like a "side swipe". So I unlimbered my keyboard and pounded out the following.]

*** begin quote ***

Sorry, as an MC alum, I think you’re wrong about Manhattan College. And, the purpose, imho, of “university” in the concept of education. Responding to the ruling, Brennan O’Donnell, president of the College, said “the analysis clearly and unfortunately demonstrates the NLRB’s lack of understanding of the identity of Manhattan College as a 21st-century Catholic college whose mission requires engagement with the broader culture of American society and higher education. Apparently the union and the government mistake our intellectual openness and welcoming spiritual environment, which we consider to be strengths of the Catholic intellectual tradition, as weaknesses. The ruling suggests that the Regional NLRB believes that the primary hallmarks of an authentic Catholic college or university are exclusionary hiring, a proselytizing atmosphere, and dogmatic inflexibility in the curriculum.” You may disagree with Manhattan College’s level of conformity with how you see it. But you fail to understand the threat to everyone that the out-of-control Gooferment represents. The “failure of Catholic Education” is rooted on the “free education” competition by the Gooferment. I’d assert that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a “product”, and education is a product, to be sold to parents when they can choose an alternative that has zero pocketbook cost. When we “allowed” Gooferment to run education, we “permitted” it to brainwash the future voters. I think, that the NLRB on MC’s “Catholic-ity”, is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Baby D’s BIG DAY!!

*** begin quote ***

I have been writing here on Shell Shock for over a year now. One of my fellow Bloggers and big supporter has been Ryan Darcy who writes WAXED RED THREADS and Digital Darcy Photography. Both are blogs I follow and highly recommend.

Well Ryan and his lovely (I’ve never met her but Ryan constantly refers to her as lovely, beautiful, etc in his posts…So I’ll take his word for it!) Lindsay have had for their first child (Nolan) a little after 6a this morning, April 16! (I’m strutting a bit because I actually was one of 2 peeps that picked today as the big day…and I did it 10 days ago not a couple days ago like #2 did!).

{Extraneous Deleted}

Ryan has posted some Pics on both of the web sites I linked to above if you’d like to see the little SLUGGER for yourself. His pop (Ryan) is a former college baseball player (And I believe played a little Minor League ball too) and a coach now for Manhattan College in the Bronx NY.

[JR: Great, next to weddings, birth announcements are the most joyous. Mozel Tov. I expect to see Nolan pitching for MC in a few weeks. Ok, maybe a few years. With a name like that, weeks. ROFL! Yeah, for you guys. (How come wife does all the hard work but dads take all the credit. I'll stop there. When I was at a tri-service installation, the Navy guys had a whole riff on that subject. Not for mixed company, but funny as all ... ... Congrats to Mom. Best wishes. This made my Sunday morning.]

   Dear fJohn,

I hope you can see that others might be “doing [their] conscience” on this and other issues – even if theirs doesn’t align with yours….

As always – thanks very much for your efforts with JJ and I hope you are able to continue to do well in spite of your recent loss!

[JR: Alignment to my path is not required for civil discourse. How may time have Jasper Stebbins and I left off with "agree to disagree agreeably". (Even if he's wrong!) ROFL. I R an injineer. And, there's always ONE RIGHT answer. Sigh. I'm a little L libertarian and used to standing alone. Some would say "stopped clock". I'd prefer to think of it as a compass and the North Star of "Liberty". :-) We, unfortunately in America lately, can't seem to treat others with respect due a fellow human being. [JR: Thanks for your kind words. This modest effort has to get more reporters, contributors, authors, editors, and administrators if Jasper Jottings is to survive me. My loss has opened my eyes to a lot of things. Wrote a new will and even bequeathed Jasper Jottings to another Jasper. Won't he be thrilled. I'm sure he's expecting cash. ROFL. Seriously, I'm open to suggestions to how we can make this "survivable" since it's obvious that MC, Alumni, and "Development" have a different opinions. How did the Ivies develop their espirit d'corps? They have a networking association to die for. Argh! Open to everyone's thoughts. It's got to be more than the domain name and some web space. Maybe I should incorporate it? And, sell stock. Like Bernie Made-off. LOL, or the Boston Celtics.]

POSITRACTION: Soap Sculptures for Salvation?

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/catholic-man-creates-biblical-scenes-using-soap-coffee

*** begin quote ***

Daisomont, who attends St. Michael Church in Waterbury, hopes to form a nonprofit organization, build a Web site and sell his sculptures at church bazaars to raise money for Catholic causes. Until then, he is stockpiling his art and selling it piece by piece, starting at $29.95. When a repairman showed up at his home to work on the television, Daisomont showed him the sculptures in his studio.

[JR: Here's a classic example of "marching to the sound of one's own drum". I'm sure that everyone rolls their eyes. But, he's doing what he thinks "spreads the Truth" as he sees it. What more can we do? What more DO we do? What should we be doing. My first thought was: Here's a good "test case" for a marketing / computer science person. :-) As long as they understand that their reward will be in Heaven or bars of Dial soap.]

ENDNOTE: “I know not what course others may take …”

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/be-courageous-catholics-archbishop-chaput-urges-notre-dame-students

Be courageous Catholics, Archbishop Chaput urges Notre Dame students
By Kevin J. Jones

*** begin quote ***

South Bend, Ind., Apr 9, 2011 / 07:10 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver encouraged a gathering of pro-life University of Notre Dame students to be courageous in fighting for their beliefs and to always remember what being Catholic really means.

*** and ***

Christians should act on their beliefs always with humility, charity and prudence, but also always with courage, he emphasized.

“We need to fight for what we believe,” he said. “Nothing we do to defend the human person, no matter how small, is ever unfruitful or forgotten. Our actions touch other lives and move other hearts in ways we can never fully understand in this world. Don’t ever underestimate the beauty and power of the witness you give in your pro-life work.”

The archbishop also described abortion as “the foundational human rights issue of our lifetime.”

“We can’t simultaneously serve the poor and accept the legal killing of unborn children. We can’t build a just society, and at the same time legally sanctify the destruction of generations of unborn human life,” he added.

Abortion is no longer the only major threat to the right to life, which now faces a range of challenges including physician-assisted suicide, cloning, genetic screening, genetic engineering, and cross-species experimentation.

*** and ***

“Virtue does matter,” the archbishop said as he finished his talk. “Courage and humility, justice and perseverance, do have power. Good does win. And the sanctity of human life will endure.”

*** end quote ***

[JR: I'd shorten it up to just "Be Courageous". Who cares what others think or do? Remember Patrick Henry. "I know not what course others may take; but as for me ... ...". And the "And when we die, and you are sent to heaven for doing your conscience, and I am sent to hell for not doing mine, will you come with me, for fellowship? " -- apocryphal movie quote attributed to Saint Thomas Moore. Just do it!]
