JEMAIL: Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1967) forgot to mention the website

Hello John,

Thanks, too, for including the outline of Addis Hope in Jasper Jottings. After reading it, I realized that I didn’t include the web site (www.addis-hope.com) that tells Jaspers how to donate to the program. I don’t know if that inclusion is possible but it might prove beneficial if it could be.

Stay tuned,
Greg

[JR: Always can't hurt to replug. After all we know how forgetful fat old white guy Jaspers can be. No excuse for not exercising those "purse" moths.]

Flynn, Bro. Gregory (MC1967)

[JR: After all those years of Katholic Indoctination Kamps, ... err I mean Catholic Schools with the Good Sisters and Brothers providing loving instruction, ... it still freaks me out to exchange email with a Christian Brother and have him sign off as "Greg". I expect any minute that Brother Kevin, Brother George, Brother Cronin, or any number of others will pop up and administer a head knuckle bop. Those hurt! And we were all such innocent, polite, and well-behaved boys. :-) Seriously, I got written up for "slouching disrespectfully". No joke; my Mom saved the letter. ROFL.]

POSITRACTION: Pro-Lifers Do Care After Birth

Disproving the Abortion Lie: Pro-Lifers Don’t Care After Birth
by Gerard Nadal, Ph.D. | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 6/6/11 12:19 PM

*** begin quote ***

One of the greatest lies and slurs hurled at pro-lifers is that we only care about the baby until it is born.

“Are you prepared to pay for that child of poverty in order to help raise it for the next eighteen years? No?? Then shut up about abortion!”

It’s a clever little manipulation, though not much in the way of an argument.

Responsibility for raising the child resides with the parents, not society. To suggest that the mother and father of a poor and unexpected child cannot be counted on to be the primary providers of their child is to infantilize the parents and inject chaos into the lives of the family. Our inner-cities suffer from just this sort of chaos with generational poverty that traces its roots back to the well-intentioned Great Society programs begun in the 1960′s. For decades people have lamented that there must be a better way.

There is, and two of the architects of this better way are Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., and Mr. Christopher Bell, Co-Founders of Good Counsel Homes. I worked briefly with Chris Bell at Covenant House in Times Square when I began there in 1983. Covenant House was a shelter for homeless teens, and Chris and I worked with the mothers and babies. Chris thought more needed to be done for homeless pregnant women, and was challenged by Father Groeschel to do something himself. So, in 1985, Chris and Father Groeschel opened the first of what would grow into five homes for mothers and their babies. Soon after, Chris opened a home in my parish.

[JR: I disagree with the “well-intentioned Great Society programs”; I’d assert that politicians and bureaucrats are never “well intentioned”. That’s the inherent nature of the tragedy. There is a huge difference between effective charity and symbolic political posturing of the knave. All that aside, here’s an example of how it has to be done. Personally. Now, since not everyone can be Mother Teresa. … … “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” — Mother Teresa … … Your checkbook can provide the support these types of activities need. Sure, it’s better to be in the trenches, but there’s also a need to supply the “bullets” as well. Your vocation is where you find it. And, the only “sin” is not to look. I’m sure my fellow alum have already learned this. But, I’m still blundering along. So allow me to share my “wow” moments. How does that St. A’s prayer go: “… just not yet”? In any event, one can NOT claim the mantle of being “pro life”, if one doesn’t follow it to the logical conclusions — pro after birth, anti death penalty, anti unjustified war, anti human dignity. I add that you have to be “pro choice” too (aren’t labels hard to deal with?) and stop using force on other human beings but convince them by the light of your conduct. Then turn it all over to Amazing Grace for a successful conclusion. Just doing my part as I see it, everything else is above my pay grade. Donna Nobis Pacem]

ENDNOTE: Is this the way to save Catholicism?

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/father-john-haney-receives-pastor-award-from-ncea

Father John Haney receives pastor award from NCEA
By William Hill

*** begin quote ***

Father Haney’s significant contribution to Catholic education in the diocese is maintaining St. Gabriel School as tuition-free for the more than 400 students in preschool through eighth grade. He does this by promoting stewardship in the parish and encouraging parishioners to share a portion of their time, talent and treasure in support of all parish ministries, including the school.

“When I came here 28 years ago, I didn’t know how I was going to have enough money to keep the school tuition-free,” he said. “About 20 years ago, I was going to start charging tuition. But I had obtained a copy of ‘Sharing Treasure, Time and Talent: A Parish Manual for Sacrificial Giving or Tithing’ (1982) by Msgr. Joseph Champlin, and I wondered if it would work.

“Fran Devlin, who was the chief financial officer for the diocese, told me that if I could get 15 percent of the parish to tithe, I would be successful. I said, ‘Don’t you mean 85 percent?’ He said, ‘No, just 15 percent.’ I said to myself, ‘If I can’t get 15 percent, then I ought to get out of this business.’

“Francis Nowalk, a parishioner on our financial board and parish council, really helped me put it over the top. He said, ‘Father, just give it a try.’ So we did, and we’re still going today.”

*** end quote ***

Maybe that’s the key to success … …

… … but to get parish tithing there has to be a real community.

From what I’ve seen that was never the driving principle of the “Catholic Church”. Maybe I was just corrupted and broken. “Community” was not what was being sought by the leadership.

Interestingly enough, I’ve seen spin offs of “Catholics” who formed their own “Communities” when they could find them at a local parish. Maybe that something organic that folks need.

Even today, I have seen folks, mostly old, drive a self-organizing effort without priestly involvement, or with minimal involvement, to satisfy that urge.

Todays “Big Catholic Church” is all about money. And, that’s why it’s dying. Sure, the Gooferment is putting the sword to it since it wants no rival for the loyalty of the people. But, the “Catholic Church” sealed its fate when it gave up the battle for the hearts and minds of its children. By allowing the “Secular Progressives” to take over education, the war was lost.

Now a fraction of its former size, scope, and influence, with its “brand” shattered by CINO politicians, as well as renegade supposedly “Catholic” organizations — colleges and universities, religious orders, and “committees”, the future path is easily seen.

Could it be that this priest has the key to reversing the downward spiral?

It’s not just “free” school; it’s the vibrant parish to support all Catholicism.

Only time will tell and us fat old white guy injineers are natural born “the glass is half empty” kinda guys.

If you can’t get to New Brunswick, then give in her name locally.

All-Female GIRSA Performs Traditional Irish Music
Eight young women from Pearl River play with a sense of tradition and a love for music in the band GIRSA, named for the Gaelic word for “young girls.”
By Donna Schmidt

*** begin quote ***

Maeve and Bernadette’s mother Rose was an original member of the all-female band Cherish the Ladies http://www.cherishtheladies.com (a traditional Irish Band) before raising a family and she now teaches fiddle out of her home. The Flanagan’s father, Mike, plays the fiddle, concertina, tin whistle and piano. Several of the GIRSA girls including Maeve and Bernadette started fiddle lessons with Rose at a very young age.

“These girls were my first students,” explained Rose.

Each of these ladies is well spoken, easy going, charming, witty, smart, friendly, and young. Friends that grew up in Pearl River and have known each other all their lives, all are either attending college, just recently graduated or attending law school. They are trying to find jobs and figure what they want to be in the “adult” world— and in their spare time they play music and lots of it.
