[JR: Hard to believe but I used to be a John Wayne fan. Before I recognized "Hollywood" as a shill for the Gooferment and the Socialist brainwashing. Hmmm, wonder if that will be pointed out. Let me adjust my tin foil hat! ]

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and THIS SATURDAY is when Mike is competing in the Super Spartan Race in Staten Island!! He is competing on behalf of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC)’s own Fred’s Team, and donations will go towards pediatric cancer research. I am so proud of Mike, and his fellow competitor AJ Falco, as they are the first people competing in the Spartan Race on behalf of Fred’s Team! MSKCC contacted Mike, and I’m excited to announce that Fred’s Team has come on board as a sponsor for the Super Spartan Race this year, and will be staffing a booth at the finish line. One of the obstacles, the Traverse Wall, will be painted ORANGE for Fred’s Team and have some of their signage too! We are all so excited about the newly forged relationship between Fred’s Team and the Super Spartan Race. I told Mike what a difference I feel he has made already just by helping these two organizations team up!

Coach Ann Karine, one of the Fred’s Team running coaches, wrote an article for the Examiner about the Super Spartan Race and interviewed Mike to grab a quote about why he continues to fundraise and why he chose the Super Spartan Race:

http://www.examiner.com/endurance-sports-in-new-york/super-spartan-race-on-staten-island

For those of you wondering, the Spartan Race is an 8 mile mud run with 15+ obstacles. The competitors do not know in advance what the obstacles will be, but past ones have included rope climb, barbed wire crawl, etc. CRAZY!

Mike is about $900 away from his goal! If your means permit, please click on the link and help him reach his goal! Many thanks to those of you who have already donated and supported this great cause that is so near and dear to our hearts.

As far as race details, it is this Saturday, September 24th at 9AM at Wolfe’s Pond Park Preserve in Staten Island, NY. If you are free, PLEASE come join our family as we cheer Mike and AJ on. And I believe that Mike could use some extra words of encouragement as he gets ready to embark on this new adventure – please drop him a line in the guestbook too!! THANK YOU!!

Letting Go and Starting Fresh (A Guest Post)

*** begin quote ***

I have the great pleasure of introducing Ryan Darcy, author of the blogs Waxed Red Threads and Postgame Vigilante as a guest blogger tonight.

Ever since I resigned – yes, I resigned from a steady job in this hapless, spiraling economy – I have been nothing short of ecstatic of the time I am able to spend with our five-month-old son, Nolan. I was an assistant coach at a very successful college baseball program – Manhattan College – for six years – to the tune of a 200-119 record. I also played at Manhattan from 1999 to 2003. I pitched. The head coach left to take the head job at Fordham but I did not go with him. Instead, I chose to pursue the head job at my alma mater, a place I was once proud to call my “home” – no more. To say there are a lot of idiosyncrasies and nuances associated with working there is an understatement. Given my ten years of dedication to the school, I basically knew all the ins and outs. However, I was passed over to become the next head coach. I felt slighted and decided it was in my best interest to leave after I got a voicemail telling me of their decision to go with another candidate. So be it.

{Extraneous Deleted}

*** end quote ***

[JR: I don't know what went into the decision that turned him down. I'm also not surprised at the voicemail. Jobseekers are not valued in today's society. I'd have hoped that MC would have had more class in dealing with people. But employers are employers; it seems universal. It was an interesting short read.]

The NY Applied Science School: Are NYIT and Manhattan College in the Mix?
September 19, 2011 at 3:06 pm
by Lisha Arino

*** begin quote ***

As previously reported, 27 institutions from around the world this past summer have expressed interest in helping NY start a new school for applied sciences, which is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s plan to attract more tech firms to the area.

But two local schools aren’t on that list: the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Manhattan College.

*** and ***

Manhattan College, located in the Bronx, was also part of that consortium, said Elizabeth Connolly, from the school’s communications office, in an email.

Earlier this year, the mayor put out a request for proposals to build a new engineering school. According to the Economic Development Corporation’s website, the winning bid will receive the use city-owned land, seed money and the administration’s support. So far, the EDC has received 18 proposals from 27 institutions worldwide, with Stanford University and Cornell University expressing a strong interest in the project, with institutions from Israel, South Korea and Canada have also placed bids. Locally, Columbia University, New York University, Cooper Union, and the City University of New York have all expressed interest, as the deadline for bids is October 28.

Manhattan College hasn’t quite given up though, according to Connolly.

[JR: The Gooferment now wants to be in the education biz. Maybe it's my tin foil hat talking, but I'd be suspect of everything the Gooferment wants to do. The City of New York, the State of New York, and the Federal Government of the USA are all morally and fiscally bankrupt. MC could spin a lot of cycles distracted form its core mission while slitting its own throat (i.e., helping this new school get started). We've seen in the MC CMSV merger a lot of cycles wasted when stuff falls through. MC doesn't have those cycles to waste. Besides if MC was to get into bed with Bloomberg, all the fleas would come home to roost. A RINO; Bloomberg would bring along forced unionization, abortion "rights", same sex "marriage", and all the baggage one finds with atheistic Socialists. Look at how the Clergy and First Responders were treated at the recent 9/11 memorial. No, Gooferment is NOT your friend. And, past is prologue. Focus on the core mission; maybe this will dry up and go away.]

JHQ: Blood Drive @ MC on 10/4 1000 – 1800

http://goo.gl/ejcEE

Dear Jasper,

As a part of the first-ever MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) Blood Drive Challenge, Manhattan College and the American Red Cross will host a blood drive in Smith Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The entire Manhattan College community and alumni are encouraged to join in the goodwill effort. The blood drive will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is also open to all.

Those in attendance will receive a custom Manhattan College/MAAC Blood Drive Challenge t-shirt and have an opportunity to win men’s and women’s basketball season tickets. A grand prize of an Apple IPad will also be raffled off to one student. In addition, there will be appearances by Steve Masiello, men’s basketball coach and John Olenowski, women’s basketball coach to greet fans and alumni in attendance.

The American Red Cross and the MAAC joined together to create the MAAC Blood Drive Challenge as a fun and competitive way to emphasize the critical importance of donating blood. The institution that has the most actual donors will win the inaugural American Red Cross MAAC Blood Drive Challenge and receive a commemorative trophy at an on-campus event later in the year.

For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Lois Harr by phone at (718) 862-7142. Also, visit the American Red Cross’ tips for a successful donation to learn more about donating blood.

Hornell remembers ‘Lorry’
By Derrick Balinsky The Evening Tribune Posted Sep 02, 2011 @ 12:30 PM

Hornell, N.Y. — Lorry Castiglione, donning the white and green of Manhattan College, once threw the first-ever touchdown pass seen on live television, according to local legend.

“He always liked to tell that story,” John Tobin, a long-time friend of Castiglione, said. “I’m not sure who they played, but they played the game at Yankee Stadium. He threw the first touchdown ever to be seen live on T.V. — that’s the way Lorry told it anyway and it’s probably true. He was proud of that fact.”

Castiglione passed away at the age of 92, Aug. 23 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
