JEMAIL: Gearity John E. (MC1961) recalls the Terminal; vaguely familiar?

From: Gearity John E. (MC1961)
Date: Sun, Oct 30, 2011 at 8:14 AM
Subject: Terminal Bar Photo

John,

Re photo of Terminal Bar…brought back some memories. The two dapper dudes are eyeballing that Ford station wagon like they may want to ride home instead of walking up the subway steps ?

As I recall in the 1957 – 61 era at MC, the Terminal was a bus driver and motorman bar. The bus and subway drivers were the primary patrons during a quick break from their vehicles. There was a lunch counter. The back room was the primary MC student venue for group beer parties. Most of the classier students of that day would never be seen at the bar in the Terminal which was reserved for wheezing old men smoking and drinking boilermakers. The preferred bars were the Greenleaf which served as a rendezvous point for launching many adventures into the night. No young lady would enter the Leaf as it was regarded as a declasse place for guys and the primary venue for Irish hurley players to beat each other up with their sticks on a Sunday night after coming there from an afternoon at Croke Park. The Pinewood was for the upper crust MC students especially the booths in the back where one could usually find the MC English department Professors providing additional instruction if you bought them a few beers. Those were the days my friend, Any more bar photos ?

John Gearity ’61A

[JR: (1) I'm sure those gentlemen were discussing the finer points of "social justice". Besides a Fix Or Repair Daily most likely wouldn't have started; key or no key. (2) Ditto my memories from '62 to '69. I was in there as Prepster thanks to the poor lighting to check proof. Or was it the premium price? (3) I recollect that there were Mounties, but no young ladies, in there from time to time. And, as I recollect the Mounties were of high moral character and low physical attractiveness. And it was an article of faith that it was waste of money to try and get them drunk since a hollow leg was part of the Mount's entrance requirements. Besides, why would you chase girls when there was all that cheap beer to drink. Least you could HAVE the beer. (4) By my time, the profs had a disappeared. The MC "management" was actively hostile to these fine establishments. I wish we had Chem Lab there; maybe then I could have gotten the correct results. (5) Those were indeed the some of the best days of my life. Until I married and she TOLD me that I was mistaken and my "best years" were starting then. Sadly, she was right; I miss her. OK, they were the second best. Wink, wink! (6) We'll have to depend upon my anonymous source for more. A prestigious lawyer with whom I spent time doing "research" in these fine establishments, he's probably not interested in being connected with such riff raff. (7) I miss those great places and the comrades as well.]

JEMAIL: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973) on Banzhaf’s suits

From: McFadden, Michael J. (MC1973)
Date: Sun, Oct 30, 2011 at 2:10 AM
Subject: John Banzhaf & Catholic University

Anyone who’s followed “The War On Smokers” over the last 40 years will be very familiar with John Banzhaf. In the last ten years he’s moved on to suing over things like fast foods and religion, but his tactics have remained basically the same: He uses the same style in this video about Catholic University that he got away with against us Free Choice folks (Note: that’s smoking choice, not abortion choice) for decades without anyone objecting:

http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/hannity/index.html

Interesting note: pay particular attention to the pitch and tone of the interviewer’s voice near the end. Then pop back to her intro at the beginning. The amount of stress change in her voice is amazing.

And here’s a good article, along with a poll and some great comments about it:

[JR: As a little L libertarian, as well as a fat old white guy injineer and little c Catholic, I'm pro-choice on everything. I believe that prospective mothers, unbrainwashed by the Gooferment Skrules run by the crazy left, and unbiased by Gooferment diktats, will choose life. (Ever see women around a new born? There positively insane.) It's only when the "pro choice" profit making machine insists that they must kill their unborn child that they can't see any other choices. I agree with Ron Paul that it's a State issue and probably a very personal issue. And, following a similar line of thought, if anyone cares, I think you should be able to put ANY drug in YOUR body. Just don't ask me to pay for the clean up. And, following along, you can BELIEVE anything you want, including in the flying spaghetti monster, just don't tell me that I have to wear a colander on my head. Or that women have to be wrapped from head to toe, can't drive, and have to be escorted like two year olds. (Although, there's some merit in my mind about not driving and mandatory clothing. Snooki and Lady "Gag" come to mind. And a whole host of "celebrities" that make me gag who should be escorted.) And, yes, I agree, we have to stand up to bullies, because eventually they'll get around to fat old white guy injineers!]

[JR: Thanks for getting my BP up on a snowy morning. Now I have to go shovel some of Mother Nature's latest joke. A blizzard for Halloween. Tricks on us!]

SAFE HALLOWEEN AT MANHATTAN COLLEGE – GREAT COMMUNITY EVENT
Posted by Adam in Blog, Uncategorized on Oct 29, 2011

*** begin quote ***

We attended the Safe Halloween Experience at Manhattan College yesterday, and it was absolutely a great community event. I wished I’d known about it before, so I could have told more of our friends. (and written it up for this blog)

We got invited at the last minute by one of AA’s classmates. Run by the Manhattan College chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society, student clubs take over two administration buildings at Manhattan College. Each room is run by a different college club, and activities include decorating trick or treat bags, participating in a scavenger hunt, games, walking through a haunted house, and of course trick or treating for candy. Some of the rooms were so-so, but some were elaborately decorated and amazingly designed, esp. when you consider the lack of budget and time for something like this.
