After assessing her case, doctors in Boston are satisfied that Elie is a good candidate for the treatment. The process itself will involve three major surgeries and could take up to six months.

Luckily both the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Madden’s private health insurer have agreed to foot the bill for the procedure, but the cost of living and travel expenses still need to be covered. Doctors have advised them that they will have to remain in Boston for at least three months.

Eddie will continue working at home in Dublin while Esti and the twin girls will travel to Boston. The family are now fundraising for their living and transport expenses for their trip to Boston, while they wait to get a date for the procedure in Boston. “There is a lot in front of us so we are anxious to get there,” Esti told the Irish Voice. The Art of Mindful Drinking
What’s the right role for alcohol in your life? Experts offer suggestions for creating a healthier, more conscious relationship to drinking.
By Caren Osten Gerszberg / November 2011

When I was growing up, my French-born mother sipped wine freely and daily. I can picture her in the kitchen, stirring a bubbly cassoulet in a dark blue enamel pot, preparing a plate of cheeses, churning the pepper mill — with a glass in hand or waiting close by. A habitual part of her cooking process, wine was also served at every evening meal. Long, narrow, green-tinted bottles with strangely spelled words were as much of a staple in our fridge as a container of milk.

[JR: I’m not the poster boy for anything; let alone alcohol. In my magnus opus “CHURCH 10●19●62”, I wished for sobriety.]

Third, she’d agonize on but demand a promise of future honesty. Second, was where she’d spend a lot of time? Drinking like her Uncle vin would be a sticking point. The decision would hinge there.

“That being said, I will accept your apology and forgive. But there are three conditions. (1) Your Irish enough. I want the Pioneer Pledge. You can never take another drink.”

Pioneer Total Abstinence Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart (or PTAA) is an Irish organisation for Roman Catholic teetotallers. Its members are commonly called Pioneers. While the PTAA does not advocate prohibition, it does require complete abstinence from alcoholic drink from its members. It also encourages devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as an aid to resisting the temptation of alcohol. Pioneers wear a lapel pin called a Pioneer pin with an image of the Sacred Heart, both to advertise the organisation and to alert others not to offer them alcohol. The association publishes a monthly magazine, The Pioneer.

Our mission is to address the problems in society caused by excess alcohol consumption and drug usage. We do this through:
* Faith and prayer
* Self denial
* Example
* Activities based on presenting alternatives to individuals, particularly the young
* Advocacy

Our vision – based on the love in the Heart of Christ, as expressed in The Gospels – is to help to build a society where people live to their full potential and alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation avoiding the ills that arise in society from excess in its use.

JNEWS: Murphy, John [MC1957] runs for District 16 County Legislator

2011 Patch Elections: District 16 County Legislator

John Murphy, Eliot Tozer or Andrew Wiley. Wiley, who is on the Common Sense line after losing to Murphy in a Republican primary, did not respond to Patch’s questionnaire request.

By Ryan Buncher October 28, 2011

*** begin quote ***

Patch has asked your candidates a set of questions. Check back each day for their answers. This week, we’re looking at county candidates and next week we’ll look at town candidates. Today, we look at District 16 in the Rockland County Legislature, which includes parts of Pearl River, Orangeburg, Tappan and Blauvelt. The rest of Pearl River is in District 16, where Republican Patrick Moroney is running unopposed.

Party Lines

Murphy: Republican, Conservative, Independence
Tozer: Democratic
Wiley: Common Sense

What community do you live in?

Murphy: Orangeburg

How long have you lived there?

Murphy: Since 1961

How old are you?

Murphy: 76

Provide family information.

Murphy: Married to Eileen Murphy. Sons Christopher and Matthew. Daughter Jennifer. Five grandchildren.

What is your education background?

Murphy: B.E.E. from Manhattan College

Why do you think you are qualified for this position?

Murphy: It all ties together. My role in government, my view of government, is that it exists as a safety net for people who desperately need help. You don’t need government to govern the rich and the powerful. They can take care of themselves.

Why are you running for this elected office?

Murphy: What keeps me going I love what I do. It’s a love affair for me. I love the ability to help the helpless.

What are the three issues that most concern you?

Murphy: The first issue is the financial status of the county. The second issue is when we resolve of that, not to eliminate all of the programs that I built over the years. The third issue is to restructure county government. We have to restructure it.

Explain your proposed approach to managing these issues.

Murphy: I think we can save a lot of money by consolidating. We have already consolidated one third of our department. I believe we can consolidate another third. Then we can really trim the management, which is expensive.

We have to start sharing services with the other tax units in the county. We have to share services with towns and schools.

Have you held elected office before? Please provide details of what position and for how long.

Murphy: (Has held the District 16 seat in the county legislature for 40 years) I never wanted to be anthing else. I’ve turned down opportunities to run. I never wanted to leave. The county is the health provider and I’m a health guy.

What organizations do you belong to?

Murphy: President of Camp Venture, President of Homes for Heroes. President of Loeb House, President of the Rockland Psychiatric Center Board of Visitors, President of Petition For Paula, Member of the Rockland Detachment – United States Marine Corps League, Member of the New York Commission On Quality Of Care and Advocacy For Persons With Disabilities Surrogate Decision-Making Committee

[JR: While I don't agree with Jasper Murphy on the role and scope of "government", I applaud, support, and endorse EVERY Jasper who runs for office. (But remember, I believe that we couldn't do worse picking "representative if we picked lotto losers, welfare recipients, jury duty prospects, or anyone who's unemployed. So I have "interesting" standards for public office.) ]

Daily News’ ‘go-to guy’ James O’Leary, manager in finance department, dies at 56
Newspaper’s advertisement and billing departments manager had rep for working long hours

James O Leary, a manager in the finance department at the Daily News who was remembered for his tireless work ethic, amiable nature and humility, has died. He was 56.

O’Leary, the manager of the company’s advertisement and billing departments, died in his Yonkers home this week from what preliminary autopsy results showed was a cerebral abscess.

{Extraneous Deleted}

His death left his family reeling – both because it was so unforeseen and because it followed by slightly less than a year that of his mother, Eileen O’Leary. “To say we are all devastated is putting it mildly,” O’Sullivan said.

O’Leary was raised in Yonkers, where he graduated from Sacred Heart High School. He attended Manhattan College and got an MBA from Iona. He worked at Barclay’s before taking a job with The News in 1982.

He loved traveling and horse racing, and was a New York Giants season-ticket holder.

“Everybody liked Jimmy,” said O’Sullivan. “No one has anything bad to say about him. He was just a good guy.”

Patch 2011 Elections: District 9 County Legislators
By Kim Tran
October 28, 2011

It’s the battle of the Chris’s. Today’s District 9 candidates are Chris Carey and Chris Martone. District 9 which encompasses all of Bardonia, parts of Nanuet and New City, and small slivers of Pomona and West Nyack.

Party Lines:

Chris Martone: Democrat, Working Families Chris Carey: Republican, Conservative, Independence

1. What community do you live in?

2. How long have you lived there?

3. How old are you?

Martone: 31 Carey: 49

4. Provide family information

5. What is your education background?

Carey: I have a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from Manhattan College. I have a Master of Science degree in Telecom & Computing Management from Polytechnic University (now NYU Poly). I have a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance from Long Island University.

6. Why do you think you are qualified for this position?

Carey: I am a community minded business leader with twenty-seven years of business and management experience. As a manager, I am familiar with managing large budgets over many years, finding better and more efficient ways to do business. Further, I have extensive involvement in the community with various not- for-profits in leadership roles. This includes Board of Director positions with Camp Venture, the Rockland County Municipal Planning Federation and the Clarkstown Family Resource Center. Finally, I have almost three years of experience as a member of the Clarkstown Planning Board and of the Special Board for the Comprehensive Plan in Clarkstown. I understand how to work with business and juggle community interests.

7. Why are you running for this elected office?

Carey: Rockland County’s financial crisis is a business problem. You need a business leader to fix a business problem. I have extensive business leadership experience in private, not-for-profit and civic organizations that will enable me to make an immediate impact in the Legislature. With the retirement of Gerry Bierker after 12 years of service, the voters in Legislative District #9 have an important decision in November. You have two candidates vying for that open seat. The voters need to look closely at both candidates’ resumes and decide who is best qualified to represent them in the Legislature. I am confident that my extensive business leadership and community service clearly set me apart from my opponent. It is time for leadership – not politics.
