Andrew V. DIFIORE

DIFIORE, Andrew V.

Andrew V. DiFiore, 91, of Avon passed away peacefully on November 28, 2011.

He was a loving and dedicated husband and father, married to Louise (Stockwell) DiFiore for 58 years, with whom he had 5 children. He is survived by his wife, Louise, Bob and Donna (DiFiore) Dreier, Andrea DiFiore, Don and Colleen DiFiore, John DiFiore and Christopher DiFiore. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, plus one brother, Vincent DiFiore, 101, of Las Vegas. He was the personification of the devoted husband and father; his paramount concern for and pride in his family are a legacy he has left his children and grandchildren.

Andy was born at home in New York City on August 9, 1920, the youngest of 9 children of Cosimo DiFiore and Rosaria (Barone) DiFiore. He served his country during World War II as a Radio Operator, Sergeant, with the US Army Air Corp, serving in Japan and the Philippines as part of the Occupation Forces.

After the war, he completed his degree at Manhattan College; he continued as an active alumnus. He also completed graduate work at New York University.

He was a true New Yorker with cosmopolitan tastes and an extensive and informed knowledge of the food world. He also loved to shop for a bargain; his favorite 4-letter words were “free” and “sale”. In later years he liked to recount seeing Babe Ruth play at Yankee Stadium and was most often seen with his Yankees cap.

Andy was a communicant of Saint Ann’s Church in Avon and earlier at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa Park, NY. As a lector and member of the choir, his strong resonant voice was enjoyed by many.

Andy was the son of a baker and his first job out of college was at a macaroni company; he worked setting up restaurants before transitioning into the business machine world. He was a successful sales and marketing executive in New York City and later in Hartford. At the age of 62, he had the courage and tenacity to start his own successful business, combining his love for food and his flair for sales, at the DiFiore Pasta Co. on Franklin Ave in Hartford.. If you were a regular at DiFiore Pasta, you’d find yourself walking through the door and looking quickly to your left to see if he was sitting in his chair.

The central interests of Andy’s life were love of family, a love of food, firm friendships, and service to the community, whether as a veteran, church member, or service through Avon UNICO.

His family will receive friends Wednesday, (Nov 30), from 6-8 pm at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, (Dec. 1), 10 am directly at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road, Avon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Masonicare Partners Hospice, PO Box 70 Wallingford, 06492 or to UNICO of Avon c/o the Carmon Funeral Home of Avon. Good Afternoon All,

John Nason has informed me that James P. Murphy ’52 died yesterday, Sunday, 11/27/11, peacefully in his sleep. Jim was a close friend and classmate of John’s and others in our group. He had been bravely fighting multiple debilitating illnesses, in and out of hospitals for a number of years until his body just gave out. As much as his wife, Marge, and their 6 children will miss Jim, all agree that he is in a better place. may he rest in peace

Arrangements:

Wake: Wednesday, 11/30/11, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM & 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
   Campbell Funeral Home
81st Street & Madison Avenue, NYC

Mass: Thursday, 12/1/11 @ 10:30 AM

   St. Thomas More Church
89th Street, between Park & Madison Aves, NYC

Jim was Chairman of the CUNY System for 12 years a short while back. At the same time, Fred Salerno ’65, was Chairman of SUNY, Jay Olivo ’55, was President of NYU and Rudy Giuliani ’65 was Mayor of New York. As John so aptly put it, ” An age of Glory for Manhattan Alumni.”

Jim was one of the best. He will be missed. Please keep Jim, Marge, their 6 children and families in your Prayers. Thank you God Bless.

ADMINISTRIVIA: Attempting “FANDEL” on wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Reinkefj/John_Fandel

[JR: Since I have no life and a huge ego, that and no one else "volunteered", I'm attempting to get a "FANDEL" page into Wikipedia. Help?]

[JR: For those not familiar with Wikipedia, it's the internet's version of the Encyclopedia. It's harder than doing a blog or an ezine. So, help?]

# # # # #

Dear Potential Fans of “John Fandel”,

Please pardon this intrusion.

First, this is a one time email and I’ve not created a list, group, or some other SPAM-like thing. … Yet!

Second, I’m, for lack of better reason, having no life, have decided to attempt to get a “John Fandel” page into Wikipedia. (I’m a long-time Wikipedia contributor, but this will be the first time I attempt to fill out a stub from scratch. It’s a nerd accomplishment thing.)

(Wikipedia, for the internet neophytes, is the internet’s answer to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Everything is done by volunteers and consensus.)

Third, feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might be interested. Faculty, alumni, student, bystander. I’m not proud I’ll take help from anyone who’s interested in helping. Depending upon who and how many want to participate, I could create a group to coordinate and allow easy communication. If I have ANYONE who speaks up. You have to respond to let me know of your interest. If not interested, just ignore this message and I’ll just go it on my own.

Fourth, if you have anything that I can use to improve the article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Reinkefj/John_Fandel, or any references that I could use, then I’d appreciate that as well. If you just want to pass something along, but don’t want to play along with a croup effort, just mention that.

At the risk of coming off as an “ego”, and well aware of my own limitations as a fat old white guy injineer, I assume since there is no Fandel page on Wikipedia now, it’s no one’s “turf” and it’s OK for me to put one there. If there’s someone better qualified, more interested, more appropriate, I’ll gladly become a “second banana” or uninvolved as appropriate.

Thanks for reading,
fjohn68

Ironman Review
by Dana Miscia on Monday, November 28, 2011 at 10:15am

Thought I’d give you a summary of what went down yesterday.

Swim-

1:10 out of water 1;11 clock time. Felt amazing, drafted off swimmers entire time, was never strong enough to do that before to the extent I did yesterday so proud of myself that I did that + met my goal time.

T1-

I was so xcited about the swim time that I had some cliff shot blocks + ran out without my bib # not realizing I had forgotten it until mile 5 on bike lol. Def rookie mistake!! Should of been a little faster in t1

Bike- 6:05

Started out more conservative + decided to progressively pick it up… Only now I’m left wondering if I ‘should have’ picked it up more the 1st loop. (Was 3 loops) the heat set in like crazy the last loop + was all out of fluids so I had to keep snatching the ice cold water bottles every 10miles they were handing out. Just missed my 6hr/sub 6 goal time was happy it was apx but would of been happier w 6 flat.

T2

This is where it went down hill, as soon as I got off my bike I literally collapsed and they had to sit me down + pour water on me. It took me 15 mins to refuel, use bathroom etc to feel decent enough to run… I left t2 walking 1st few mins + then started my run. In tent I ate more shot blocks and salteen crackers.

Run-4:30

If I didn’t have this dizzy spell, my legs + cardio endurance could of DEF brought me to a 350-4 hour marathon for sure, so it was the worst feeling to feel great 1 way, yet feel like ur gonna pass out if you pushed it. The entire 1st loop (8.5 miles apx) was brutal, I felt very sick/light headed… Not only that, the skys got real dark + when I left t2 there was a tropical downpour like u wouldn’t even believe, there were lakes in the street!!! However, I was thankful for that as I don’t know if I woulda made it through if the sun was pounded hot.

The 2nd loop I started drinking more gatorade but bc of the electrolytes had to use pj every few miles…+ the last loop was so-so as it was dark by then + just wanted to finish. Also tried to eat but all I could eat were bananas and gels as I was too natious to eat anything else. I sprinted into the finish and then fainted… I ended up in med tent w an iv… :/

Total time 12:10, 1 hour off predicted time, but considering the circumstances, happy I was a warrior that battled it out. :) I’m happy I finished, but I think I’m gonna stick to sprints + halfs… Idk if my body is meant for this! Lol However, after much thought, if I can race w a friend around same pace in an Iron man in future, +/or have a friend go w me to a wkd racing trip for support, I would so do it again as my friends mean the world and inspire me most. (opinions?)

[JR: Suggest you go to her page on FACEBOOK and give her some applause. I can't imagine ever doing this. It takes a special person to do it. (Crazy?) But it's an impressive accomplishment.]

[JR: Mike, I'm truly sorry for your loss. I know from reporting the passing of my High School Classmates that it's a shock to the psyche. While intellectually we know everyone dies, it makes a feel the cold icy breath on one's neck. But, we must soldier on, secure in the knowledge of our place in The Plan."]

“And I’ve lost her … . I’m so sad that I don’t have … . But I’m so grateful that she was with me … . And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. JEMAIL: Menchise, Louis (MC1987) sad at scholastic grading

From: Menchise, Louis (MC1987)

Subject: Re: [Distribute_Jasper_Jottings] JASPER JOTTINGS Week 48 – 2011 November 27

In regard to “MC scores mostly B’s”: I find it sad that a scholastic grading system was used to basically, measure the “fun” factor. What about education? The low student to teacher ratio was mentioned, but only as a matter of comfort for prospective students. What about the education one would receive at “MC”?

Louis Menchise

[JR: Hmmm! But who says that "education" shouldn't be "fun"? I doubt that "quality education" scores with either child or parent. I'd bet that "fun" might even lose out to "likelihood of future employment". A robust linkage between students and alumni as in the School of Biz mentor program should have been highlighted as a plus, imho. Great observation though.]
