A Festival of Lessons and Carols
Sunday, December 4, 2011 4.30pm

The Manhattan College Singers and Orchestra will host their Christmas program, A Festival of Lessons and Carols, on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers, with preludes beginning at 4:15 p.m. For the second year, alumni from the Manhattan Singers and the College’s glee club are invited to take part in the event, which is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

The hour-long program is a unique and festive celebration that combines traditional Christmas carols and hymns, readings from sacred Scripture and contemporary arrangements. Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of the College, will present a reading and Andrew Skotnicki, Ph.D., chairperson of the religious studies department, will offer a reflection. The concert will feature three selections from Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, the French Renaissance piece Allons, Gay Bergeres by Costeley and a jazz version of Carol of the Bells. Keeping with tradition, the ensembles will also lead hymns, including a candlelit Silent Night, in which the congregation is invited to participate.

Following the concert, the Singers will walk by candlelight onto the Quadrangle and light the College’s Christmas tree. The event will conclude with a reception in Smith Auditorium.

For more information about this event, please contact William Mulligan, coordinator of performing arts, at (718) 862-7254 or e-mail william.mulligan@manhattan.edu.

Manhattan College

Overall Experience is one that you will never forget and this is real. All jokes aside (and their have been a lot throughout this book), you will have fun at this college. It is a small college located in the greatest city in the world. You have the opportunity to know half of the college, which is something you can’t do at other colleges or universities. There is a great student to faculty ratio and I believe it is 15:1 now. So, the teachers in all likelihood will know you by your first name. If they don’t call you by your first name, they may not like you, because trust me they know. The professors here care about the students and making sure that they graduate and are prepared to succeed in the real world. There are some things that are missing from this college, like a football team, but this college still has a lot of energy and life.

The best part of this college is the people. Now, look there are going to be people that don’t like the college or that don’t seem to like the people, but the majority of the people here are nice. The trick is getting to know them, if you go out to get to know the students and faculty, you can see just how cool and fun everyone is. The professors are intense in the classroom to do their jobs the best way they can, but outside the classroom they are really chill and are always looking to help you, with a few exceptions. You are going to have your students that are slackers and ones that are really hard workers, the majority of the school is in the middle. They work hard to get good grades, but at the same time they are not hermits. They get involved in clubs and go out to clubs or bars (mostly bars) and build themselves a unique social life.

This college does not have a lot of on-campus parties, mostly just friends drinking in their rooms, which can be a good and bad thing. Good, because it is quiet and allows students to concentrate on their studies. Bad, because it can get slightly boring and the same thing happens every week, no excitement at all. But, that is not a problem or a reason to not be interested in the school. The school gives you everything you could want from a small and comfortable atmosphere to the thrills of a Division One school. After all that was written here, what is not to like about Manhattan College, you will get the experience of a lifetime and you won’t regret coming here.

College Offers Foreign Language Scholarships for Prospective Students
November 21, 2011

*** begin quote ***

For years, Manhattan College has encouraged students to broaden their knowledge of an increasingly connected world by learning second languages, traveling abroad and pursuing cultural studies.

The College continues this mission by offering a special scholarship opportunity for high school students who are learning Spanish, French or Italian and wish to pursue language study in college. The scholarship is ideal for students considering international careers, teaching or graduate and professional schools.

“The exam was intended to promote the study of modern languages and literature,” said Caitlin Read, coordinator and director of enrollment management operations, who mentioned that more than 60 students registered for the exam last year.

Joe Pintauro was born in Ozone Park (New York) on November 22, 1930. After studying at Manhattan College, he earned a degree in American literature at Fordham University, then a degree in Philosophy at Saint Jeromes College (Ontario), after which he attended for four years the Faculty of Theology at Niagara University. From the beginning, his books of poetry are published by Harper & Row also in collaborations with artists such as Corita Kent and Norman Laliberte. Pintauro has also written short stories and novels: it must be remembered the quartet called Rainbow Box. He worked for eight years as an advertisement executive for the Young and Rubicam.

His three-act plays about the life of Italian-Americans in New York, named Cacciatore, was his first critical acclaim. Snow Orchid, his first long work, was later produced with Olympia Dukakis, Peter Boyle and Robert Lupone at Circle Rep. The work was brought to London with Jude Law and Paola di Ognisotti. His fondness for the one-act has given birth to many works as American Divine, staged in Chicago, and Moving Targets, staged at Vineyard Theatre in New York.
