Manhattan College Names Kenneth Rathgeber Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Posted on December 19, 2011

Kenneth A. Rathgeber, executive vice president and chief compliance officer for the Investment Adviser and Fidelity Mutual Funds for Fidelity Investments, has been named chairman of the board of trustees of Manhattan College. The new appointment will take effect July 1, 2012, and Rathgeber will succeed Thomas D. O’Malley, who has served as chairman since 2005.

“Ken Rathgeber has a remarkable record of commitment and service to the College, and has long been an active and valued member of the board. He will be a wonderful chairman and a worthy successor to Tom O’Malley, under whose expert leadership the board has prospered,” said Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College.

Rathgeber graduated from Manhattan College in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and throughout his career, has remained dedicated to his alma mater. Since his appointment to the College’s board of trustees in 2005, he has been a member of the development committee, was elected to the board’s executive committee in June 2007, and is currently serving as vice chair of the board. In addition, he served as a chair of the College’s Annual Fund, has been a member of the De La Salle Medal Dinner committee for several years, and is presently co-chair of the Raymond W. Kelly ’63 Student Commons capital campaign project.

“Ken Rathgeber is an excellent choice to lead the board at this exciting time in Manhattan College’s history,” said Thomas D. O’Malley, chairman of PBF Energy LLC. “He is a respected professional, a seasoned and talented leader, and a strong and dedicated supporter of the College. I am leaving the board in very good hands, and I look forward to assisting Ken and my colleagues in carrying forward the great work of the College.”

Beginning his career with Fidelity in 1995 as chief financial officer and treasurer of Fidelity Mutual Funds, Rathgeber later became acting president of Fidelity Brokerage Services. He was named president of Fidelity Brokerage Group in 1997, and was promoted in 1998 to executive vice president and chief operating officer for Fidelity Investments Institutional Services Company, Inc. He was the head of risk oversight from 2002-2008 and has maintained the position of chief compliance officer for Fidelity Funds since 2004.

Before working for Fidelity, Rathgeber spent 17 years with Goldman Sachs as chief operations officer for Asia, responsible for the operations, technology and finance functions. He was also a finance manager for Dillon Read & Company, a senior examiner for the New York Stock Exchange, and an auditor for Price Waterhouse & Company.

“It is a great honor for me to serve as chairman of the board of Manhattan College. I have worked closely with Tom O’Malley, who has been a great chairman and mentor for the last six years,” said Rathgeber. “Along with my fellow trustees, I am dedicated to seeing Manhattan College be a premier Catholic institution of higher education, and preparing our students to succeed in the challenges that they will face.”

After graduating from Manhattan College, Rathgeber went on to receive an MBA from Long Island University in 1976. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in the state of New York.

JEMAIL: Brill, Dave (MCattendee) remembers Prof Fandel; I remember the story

From: Brill, Dave (MCattendee)

Subject: Fandel RIP and photo

Hi FJohn,

Thanks for your reply. I’m glad to hear that John Fandel had other fans also. I wrote a little appreciation below, and I’m attaching a photo from one of his books, “Testament”.

Dave

——————————————————————————————

I was saddened to hear of John Fandel’s passing. Last week, I was reading something that reminded me of him. I did an online search for his name, and found quite a few items, some indicating that he was still active in his eighties. I was thinking of writing him a letter, but then saw the notice that he’d died just a few weeks ago. I wish I’d done the search earlier.

I attended Manhattan College from 1961 to 1963 and took classes from him both years. He was unequivocally the best teacher I ever had. I’d never understood what literature, especially poetry, was about (other than a high-school chore). But his insight and enthusiasm gave me a strong appreciation of writing, and of the arts in general.

In the classroom, John Fandel was more than just a lecturer. He saw his students as individuals with different concerns and aspirations. He was generous with his time, and I think many students saw him as a friend.

This was especially true in my case. In 1963, I was expelled from the College for handing out a newssheet that mildly satirized some aspects of Manhattan and the Church. I’d been summoned to a hearing conducted by the College President and other officials. To my surprise, John, on his own initiative, came and testified on my behalf (though to no avail). I’ve always been grateful for his kindness.

People sometimes say their lives were touched by one teacher in particular. For me, it was John Fandel. He opened my eyes to many possibilities. It was a privilege to know him, and may he rest in peace.

JR:

So, you’re that “Dave Brill”. Believe it or not that, I remember and read that handout. It went throught the Prep like wildfire. The Brothers went through and collected ALMOST all the copies. I vaugely remember my home room teacher “refuting it” point by point the next day. Sometimes he said “that’s a good point”. You don’t, by chance, have another copy do you? I’m active in a group of Prepsters Class of 1964 and I’m sure they get a kick reminiscing about it again. That would be a real collector’s item for us!

Unfortunately, I never met the man, John Fandel. Maybe that was good? Wonder how he felt about young soon-to-be-fat soon-to-be-old white guy injineers? We weren’t welcome up on the erudite hill. Too fixated on objective reality I was told many many times.

Thanks for sharing that story. And sparking another piece of Jasper lore. I kinda know how you must have felt. I’m not too popular with certain parts of the Administration. (They say I interfere with their fundraising.) But unlike your case, there’s not a lot they can do about me. Guess they could revoke my diploma, find a bill that I’d never paid, or conduct an exorcism.

What was that Groucho Marx line: “I would not want to join a club that would have me as a member.”?

I can’t imagine the suffering that they inflicted on you for a few words? No matter how blasphemous.

JFOUND: Quinn, Peter [MC1969] citing Fandel’s influence

http://bcm.bc.edu/issues/winter_2008/letters/letters.html

*** begin quote ***

As the father of a BC senior, I’ve been reading and enjoying Boston College Magazine for several years. The excerpt from Clare Dunsford’s book in the most recent issue took my admiration to a new level. I was deeply moved by Dunsford’s aching honesty and penetrating eloquence. Her article is as fine a piece of writing as I’ve encountered in any publication.

A long time ago at Manhattan College, I had a terrific poetry teacher named John Fandel (a first-rate poet) who told his class of sophomoric skeptics/skeptical sophomores that “writing at its best is like religion at its truest: It’s a way of redeeming experience from incoherence.” My thanks to Dean Dunsford for the reminder of the wisdom in those words.

Dear John,

This just popped up. I do not know why I did not see it before. I believe that this very well could be “our” Peter from the Class of 1969.
