Nigro, Nicholas [MC1984] — The Write Angle

*** begin quote ***

What I most revered about Christopher Hitchens was his mental dexterity— his fearlessness in the face of any and all comers. His passionate defense of freedom of speech against both the apoplectic left and right was most appreciated in this dangerous age of political correctness. While vociferously attacking and ridiculing religious extremism, when it merited being attacked and ridiculed, Hitchens never once bowed to the PC juggernaut or capitulated to its ludicrous syllabus. Contemplate this: Christopher Hitchens was the subject of very real death threats for merely standing in solidarity with Salman Rushdie—a novelist whose crime was penning a couple of sentences in a work of fiction, and who ultimately was forced underground courtesy of some insane and murderous religious decree known as a fatwa. How could a single creative sort or freethinking person in a free society like ours not throw in with Rushdie and his plight? Well, that’s a very fair question. Christopher Hitchens did in a very big and courageous way, but so many others did not. His faithfulness, nerve, and erudition will be sorely missed at a time when they are needed more than ever before….

Black Enterprise ‘Next’ Talks to The Minds Behind Singersroom

*** begin quote ***

Finding hip-hop music online is easy. There are literally hundreds of blogs and sites dedicated to the genre and it’s myriad sub-genres but when it comes to R&B it’s a different story. As popular as the genre is there are very few sites that cater to the niche. Sure there are entertainment sites that cover a range of different types of black music but there are very few that focus on the world of R&B, its rising stars and the community of people who are are passionate about it. Enter Singersroom.com. Founded in January 2006 by Gary Gentles and Adeniyi Osimore, Singersroom was created to fill that void. Omisore and Gentles met at Manhattan College, where they both ran track. They became fast friends when they realized they both had a passion for IT and Web design. Partnering to form the MusicLife Entertainment Group (MLE Group) they set out on a mission to “Live.Create.Entertain.”

Their initial approach with Singersroom was to focus on all the budding talent around them and to build an engaged and loyal community both on and offline. They created the successful events Singersroom Live! and Acoustic Conversation to showcase talent adding event producer and promoter W. Deyior Dunbar to mix as the third partner. In just five years Omisore (age 29), Gentles (30), and Dunbar (29), have made the site an authority and major platform in the R&B world–helping to launch the careers of current stars like Jazmine Sullivan and Chrisette Michelle and even receiving a 2010 Soul Train Award for “Best Soul Site.” BE Next spoke to the men behind SR to hear how they did it and what they have coming in the new year.

1. Jasper stabbed on subway

A Manhattan College student was stabbed at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 11 at the 238th Street Station, during an attempted robbery on a northbound No. 1 train.

According to a student security advisory e-mailed to students on Dec. 11, the victim said he fell asleep on the train and awoke to a man dressed in black, displaying a knife. The man attempted to steal the victim’s cell phone and “the victim sustained a non life threatening [sic] puncture wound,” according to the advisory.

The student reported the stabbing at around 2 p.m., according to the advisory.

“He’s doing well, preparing for finals,” a spokesperson for Manhattan College said on Monday.

JHQ: MC Prez top Irishman in ed

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE MC HOME PAGE NEWS DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM …

Manhattan College’s President Recognized by the Irish Voice Newspaper
Posted on December 14, 2011

The Irish Voice newspaper will recognize Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., president of Manhattan College, as one of the top figures in education with an Irish heritage at an awards ceremony on Dec. 14 at the home of Irish Consul General Noel Kilkenny. “Manhattan College has a long and rich history of service to the Irish community in New York, and I am honored to be part of the Irish Education 100 list,” O’Donnell said.

JHQ: Fall 2011 COMM(unity) newsletter

http://www.manhattan.edu/sites/default/files/COMMunity_fall2011.pdf

COMM(unity) is the official newsletter of the communication department at Manhattan College, published during the fall and spring semester of each academic year. It is also produced — in its entirety — by students in the department as an extracurricular activity. And this is as it should be. Because COMM(unity) is not simply a vehicle for us to inform the larger Manhattan College community about the newsworthy things our department, its students and its faculty are doing, it is also a vehicle to showcase what we teach our students and what they learn: how to write news and information-based articles, how to do professional-quality layout and design work, how to master the programs and software used to create such documents, and how to do all of the above on a deadline.
