On August 3, 2013, Ruben Addarich, the Assistant Principal of the Barr Middle School, unexpectedly submitted his resignation for purposes of retirement. Mr. Addarich has served the District for 12 years and he will certainly be missed. We wish him well in his retirement. The search for a new Assistant Principal will begin in the fall and may not conclude until the end of the school year.
In order to ensure the school does not miss a beat and has the administrative capacity to provide students with a safe, secure, positive learning environment, Frank Mazzuca, Director of Athletics, will serve as Interim Assistant Principal.
Mr. Mazzuca received his Bachelors Degree from Manhattan College, as well as three Masters Degrees in the areas of Reading, Special Education and School Administration. He began his teaching career as a Physical Education Instructor for the Bedford Public Schools. He began working at Rockland BOCES in 1972 and continued as a Physical Education Teacher, Administrative Assistant of Special Education, and Supervisor of Special Education.
He was involved with the Special Olympics since 1972 and received numerous awards and recognition for his commitment, including the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Mid-Atlantic States Special Olympics Committee and the Volunteer of the Year Award for the NYS Special Olympics. He received the Citizen of the Year Award from the NYS Sons of the American Revolution Organization. He was one of 28 volunteers in the United States invited to the home of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the President of the Special Olympics, in recognition of his long service to that organization.
Mr. Mazzuca is no stranger to A. MacArthur Barr Middle School, having served as Assistant Principal and later Associate Principal from 1988 to 2001. During that time, he established a close relationship between staff and students and between the school and parents. Among his many contributions, he started the Annual Father-Daughter Dance and Fifth Grade Family Fun Nights. For a brief time, Mr. Mazzuca also served as Interim Principal at Miller Elementary School before assuming his current leadership position as Director of Athletics.
We are very appreciative that Mr. Mazzuca offered to assist Mr. Guccione, the Middle School teachers, and support staff through this period of transition. During this period, the District will support Mr. Mazzuca’s continued leadership as Director of Athletics.
