Edward C. Ministri  
AGE: 84 • Red Bank

Edward C. Ministri, 84, of Red Bank, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at Waterford Glen at Brandywine Senior Living in Wall. Edward was born on Jan. 25, 1927 in Bronx, N.Y. where he grew up. In 1962, he settled in Middletown and was currently residing in Red Bank. Edward was a retired electrical engineer for Hughes Aircraft Corporation and a proud WW II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Noreen Curran Ministri. Edward is survived by seven loving children and 12 grandchildren. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3269 State Route 35 N, Hazlet. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at St. James R.C. Church, Red Bank. In respect of Edward’s wishes, he will be privately cremated. Poetry in Motion: An Alumnus’ Brush with the Big Screen

He’s published 16 books and hundreds of essays, but it was his biography of the poet Hart Crane that Paul Mariani ’62 knew was different.

Mariani, who spent the last 11 years as the University Professor of English at Boston College, had his biography of Crane published in 1999 (W.W. Norton & Company) — the poet’s 100th birthday.

Mariani is still working his day job, a career he started almost immediately after leaving the College.

Following his graduation from Manhattan with a B.A. in English and world literature, Mariani went on to get his master’s at Colgate University, eventually teaching his first college classes there.

He did his doctoral studies in English and comparative literature at Hunter College, teaching there, as well as at Lehman College and John Jay College ofCriminal Justice. His dissertation was on the poetry and poetics of Gerard Manley Hopkins with a fellowship from the Newman Center at Columbia College.

After moving to Montague, Mass., in 1968 with his wife, Eileen, and their three children, Mariani began working at Amherst, where he reworked his dissertation into a book, Gerard Manley Hopkins: A Life, which was published by Cornell University Press in 1970. Before he left Amherst to move to Boston College, he was made Distinguished University Professor of English.

After all his success, the 16 books and hundreds of essays, reviews and poems he’s published, his awards — a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Humanities and one National Endowment for the Arts fellowships — Mariani can trace his fascination of English and poets back to Riverdale.

“It was Manhattan College, which taught me a love of books, and — considering both my parents, who were smart but Depression-era kids — the school gave me the chance to move on and up,” Mariani says. “What I learned there, I have tried to pass on to several generations of college kids in my turn, as well as to keep alive and young by learning.”

Philadelphia Phillies: Top 25 Positional Prospects in the System

Matt Rizzotti is another fringe prospect with some upside.

Drafted by the Phillies in the sixth round of the 2007 Draft out of Manhattan College, Rizzotti is a big, powerful first baseman that has taken quite a while to develop in the system. Though the Phillies promoted him to AAA Lehigh Valley in 2010, he struggled and played the entire 2011 season with AA Reading.

A left handed power hitter, he is blocked at the MLB level in the Phillies’ organization, and thus, isn’t quite as valuable as he should be to other teams. Unable to play any other positions on the diamond, Rizzotti may be most valuable to the Phillies in a trade, but even then, his value is minimal.

Welsh archbishop opposes ‘presumed consent’ policy for organ donation

[JR: When I  first read this I said: "<Expletive Deleted>"! Then I understood. The State is not in charge of us. BUT otoh there should be a free market in organs. Ghoulish? NO! What sense is it to bury organs that will keep other people alive. When the Church Leadership gets up and points out that donations — organs, blood, or anything — is a corporal work of mercy, then I'll understand they are leading. Isn't not doing a work a sin? As a little L libertarian, I want poor people to earn from their corpse. A person should be able to leave his organs to his family to dispose of on the free market. Sounds ghoulish, but who owns our body?]

Park certification: Greg Petry, executive director of the Waukegan Park District, recently earned the Certified Park and Recreation Executive certification granted by the National Certification Board in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Association. The CPRE program recognizes advanced skills and competencies related to the professional practice and delivery of park and recreation programs and services.

Petry has been the executive director of the Waukegan Park District since 1994 and has been with the district since 1987. He previously was with the Highland Park, Mundelein and Park Ridge park districts. Petry obtained a bachelor of science degree from Manhattan College in 1978, and a master of science degree in parks and recreation from Pennsylvania State University in 1981.

Angelo N. Capobianco (1932 – 2012)

Capobianco, Angelo N.

Angelo Capobianco passed away Saturday at the Westchester Medical Center, he was 79.

A lifelong resident of Yonkers, Angelo was born July 15 1932 to Nicholas and Rosemarie (nee Virgilio). An Accountant and graduate of Manhattan College, he is the loving Husband of Doris (nee Furlong), and Father of Phylis Veit (David) and Robert.

Past president of the Bryn Mawr Knolls Civic Association and Trustee and Devoted Parishioner of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Angelo is also a loving Grandfather to Charles John, Jennifer, and Jessica Bilangino. He is also survived by his Brother Peter (Diana), Sister Barbara Beracha (Barry), Nieces Rosemarie Kilinski, and Bonnie Micheli. Angelo is predeceased by a Nephew Peter Capobianco but survived by Nephews Brian and Bradley Beracha.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10AM on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Yonkers. The family asks that donations be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, Provincial House, Queen of Peace Residence, 110-30 221st Street, Queens Village New York 11429 or St. Bartholomew’s Church, 15 Palmer Road, Yonkers New York 10701.

I’d offer to carry anyone memories of their lost comrades. Military or “other”. I’d like to honor and say a prayer for them all. Regardless of how you or I felt about the war, it’s sad that these were all lost. Argh! ]

Mark’s right.  Cohalan did the cartoons and a lot of the writing.

And inside the paper, there’s a long tongue-in-cheek letter from John Straub, MP ’60.

As you say, John, life is possible after getting tossed.  In my case, I worked and travelled for awhile after being expelled.  I got my degree from CCNY, and then went to Stanford for graduate school.  I spent my working years doing software R&D here in California, and I retired a few years ago.

I believe the cartoon of Christ on the cross was the work of Kevin Cohalan.  He was also tossed out and now lives in Montreal.

Every year I do a ‘year in review’ write up + I’m gonna start it now. Just to sum up; this has been a pretty a-mazing year in several ways. Between the traveling, the new friends I have met along the way, the new and exciting experiences I have encountered, and more, I learned more about myself as an athlete than I ever have learned in my life. I have inspired many and some that I’ve been trying to inspire for yrs finally reached out to me, which became one of my highlights of the year. I am here to tell my story of 2011 of the highlights and overviews of each month, what I learned, what I gained, and what brought me to where I am today, and more so, who I am today in this current moment.

[JR: It's a great idea. In writing a bio for my wife, I wish I'd done a summary every day, every week, every month, and every year. Sigh! I recently read a friends "Christmas letter". Terrible concept. TOO easy to be seen bragging. But a good historical collection. I'd suggest everyone do it. Too quickly the details are lost.]
