CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) has a Shaka Zulu in his collection

July 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

To one and all: Like all Ravens fans (and all football fans) I was shocked and saddened at the untimely and tragic death of the great quarterback Steve McNair. As I looked at the photos of McNair in the news, I noticed something curious. He bore a striking resemblance to my portrait painting of Shaka Zulu, which hangs in the Alberta Cason Room at the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore. Unlike other purported “portraits” of Shaka, I based my portrait on the only drawing of Shaka made in his lifetime, at the height of his power in 1824. So it is actually the best color likeness of Shaka Zulu in existence. Both McNair and Shaka were murdered, McNair at the age of 36 and Shaka at about the age of 40 (his exact birthdate is unknown). Here are a couple of views of my portrait of Shaka Zulu, which can be seen at the Museum at 1601 E. North Avenue in Baltimore, and on my website at www.newbreen.com/portraitart.html . CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) remembers stranglove

June 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

John: Here’s a new cartoon, about North Korea’s psycho dictator Kim Jong Il. Even though his country is the poorest nation in the world and his people are starving (human arms and legs have been seen for sale in his country’s meat markets), Kim has devoted his country’s resources to developing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons. Now Japanese and U.S. intelligence agencies are predicting that he will launch a long-range missile (with a nuke?) toward Hawaii on around July 4th. Obviously, we would be forced to respond. Since Kim recently renounced the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, that war has actually officially resumed. So nobody should be surprised by the events of the coming weeks. Not if they’ve been paying attention to the news. – Jerry Breen ‘71 www.newbreen.com

John: Here’s my latest cartoon, featuring the irrepressible Joe Biden. (I guess Obama would sometimes like to repress him, but – alas – it’s just not possible.) Thanks, Jerry Breen

CARTOON: Jerry launches two new salvos … … err, toons

May 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

John: Here are a couple of new Obama cartoons. Well, almost new. I drew them more than a week ago, but didn’t get a chance to color them in until tonight, and I didn’t want to send them out half-done. I’ll send you some fresher “hot off the presses” ones during the week. Thanks, Jerry Breen MC’71 newbreen@comcast.net www.newbreen.com

CARTOON: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) hits the G-20 summit

April 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

200904022100.jpg

John: Here’s my latest cartoon, on the subject of the G-20 summit. While British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and President Obama are urging all the other leaders to use government spending to boost all the economies simultaneously, others, led by Germany’s Angela Merkel, are disputing the whole government “stimulus” tactic. (Although, oddly, Merkel has already committed $70 million in government spending, while Brown has so far only committed only $28 billion.) ?!? Go figure. – Jerry Breen

Subject: R.I.P. John Updike

To one and all: John Updike died the other day of lung cancer at age 76. Although he’s primarily remembered as a prolific novelist and essayist, he was also one of the 20th Century’s leading poets. Here’s the drawing of Updike that I did just last year for the International Society of Poets in Owings Mills. You can also view it on their website (the world’s most popular poetry website) at www.poetry.com . Sincerely, Jerry Breen http://www.newbreen.com

JEmail: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) reports he’s mentioned in a German publication

January 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

From: Breen, Jerry (MC1971)
Date: January 20, 2009 6:33:04 AM EST
Subject: Obama calligraphy portrait

To one and all: My unique calligraphy portrait of President Obama is now attracting international attention. A German publication, Financial times Deutschland, printed it as part of an article on the various ways artists depict Obama. (See below.) The headline “Malen nach Wahlen” means “Art after Elections”. The caption next to my artwork reads: “Jerry Breen drew Obama with his own words. He created a calligraphy portrait from Obama’s speech in 2004. His first one was of Martin Luther King formed from calligraphy. “I’m probably the only one who makes these portraits”, says Breen. “Maybe I’m the only one patient enough. Or “verruckt” enough.” (That’s German for “crazy”.) My next portrait (watch for it) is Abraham Lincoln, formed by the words of his Gettysburg Address. Thanks, Jerry Breen www.newbreen.com

Subject: Obama calligraphy portrait

To one and all: My latest creation is a new addition to a series of unique calligraphy portraits that I’ve done over the years. My calligraphy portrait of President-elect Barack Obama “In His Own Words” is literally that – Obama’s own words, from his eloquent keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, rendered by hand in calligraphy, actually forms his portrait! An absolutely unique collectible work of art. Nobody else in the world creates anything like my unique calligraphy portraits. Other subjects over the years have included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, among others. Prints are available. For an 11 by 14 inch print on fine parchment, suitable for framing, send a check or money order for $10 to: Jerry Breen, 816A Cinnamon Ridge Place, Cockeysville, MD 21030. Include your mailing address. For 3 or more prints, just send $7.50 for each print. They make great gifts. Thanks again for your interest in my art. Sincerely, Jerry Breen www.newbreen.com

CARTOON: Gerstell Academy’s “Gallery of Heroes” is President-Elect Barack Obama

November 6, 2008 · Comments Off

From: Breen, Jerry (MC1971)
Date: November 6, 2008 6:46:49 AM EST
Subject: Obama painting

To one and all: My latest portrait painting for Gerstell Academy’s “Gallery of Heroes” is President-Elect Barack Obama. President Obama’s portrait joins over 175 other portraits in the halls of Gerstell Academy, a private school in Finksburg, Maryland. When the school opened its doors about 8 years ago, the founder, Dr. Fred Smith, decided to hang portraits of positive role models from history in the hallways to inspire the students. He originally envisioned about 20 portraits. As the school has grown, so has the gallery. It is now possibly the largest collection of portrait paintings by one artist in one place. CARTOON: Obama’s seal?

Obama's Seal of Office

Obama

John: As you know, I don’t usually collaborate with anyone else on political cartoons, but sometimes I make an exception. A few days ago, Lonnie Mussell, a small business man from Stockbridge, Georgia, who owns a construction business, sent me the idea for this cartoon, which I drew for him. Much like the celebrated “Joe the plumber”, Lonnie is concerned that Obama’s tax plans would actually punish the middle class and small businesses. And like Joe, he was shocked by Obama’s answer that Joe should support Obama’s efforts to “spread the wealth around”. (Obama’s commitment to Socialist redistribution of wealth was confirmed by a 2001 Chicago Public Radio interview in which he described his plans at great length.) So I was only too glad to help Lonnie out by illustrating his concept. Here it is. Sincerely, Jerry Breen
