Carlo and Christine Marano of Lakecrest Drive, Danbury, announce the engagement of their daughter, Sandra Anne Marano, to Robert Smith Jr., son of Robert and Maryellen Smith of South King Street, Danbury.

The future bride graduated from Danbury High School and from Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y., with a B.A in communications. She is an analyst at the Nielson Co. in Wilton.

The future bridegroom graduated from Danbury High School and from Western Connecticut State University with a B.S. in business management. He is employed by Boehringer Ingelheim in Southbury.

An October 2009 wedding is planned.

Bill and Pattie Fife will celebrate their 40th Wedding Anniversary on August 24th.

Unfortunately, I’ll be at a wedding. A prior commitment; made months ago. (All the “nieces” and “nephews” know to invite Frau Reinke early to shindigs; She writes checks with zeros. I, on the other hand, would offer a shiny new dime. Or an autographed copy of my blog book. 40$ at Lulu. I actually sold three; guess some folks needed door stoppers!)

Any way, if you run into “Fife and Wife” as they were known in the glory days”, give me a hug and ask about their “bucket list”.

Bill was my bridge partner in school. (the card game; not structures! Did you forget who was writing this?) We were good together. I was a stodgie straight ‘n’ narrow old bidder and he was the “italian” on our team. (”italian” was bridge pejorative for the Italian National Bridge Team, who used a strong 1 club convention. They were known for their flights of fancy; where bids had no relation to reality.) Like the time, in the Open Nationals at the NYC Hiton, he bids Six Spades and the two old biddies, who have the Ace AND King of Spades with FOUR Spades each, don’t double and wind up in a nose2nose yelling match with each other about who should have doubled. Hey, Bill had five little ones; I had none. Anyway, Bill tries to make peace between the two old broads and gets a tongue lashing about his wildness. I just shook my head and shut up. I had NO idea what was going on. But Bill was in his glory. We had an undisputed top on that one. Everyone wanted to know how we did it. I just pointed them towards Bill for his explanation.

I bet, if you ask him, he can still explain that hand.
