“Irish Exit” is a term used when a person leaves a place without saying goodbye to the people they are with.”

Early versions of the term Irish Exit come from Irish Americans leaving social functions like Church, football games, and plays. When the functions let out people would congregate outside and chat with each person they knew and say goodbye before heading home. This usually added 30 minuets to an hour to the evening. When there was little or no time to do the customary goodbye, the family would leave through the side door. The side door move became known as the Irish Exit. The term has come to mean leaving a place without saying goodbye to those you are with or those you came with.

JNEWS: Winfield, Dan [MC????] 508th out of 1,009 finishers

Without Limits: Winfield trains hard to stay in shape

*** begin quote ***

Meet Poppop.

Well, meet him if you can catch him.

Dan Winfield is “Poppop” to his six grandchildren. To the rest of the world — the athletic world, anyway — he’s an age-doesn’t-matter swimmer and triathlete.

The New Paltz resident, who’ll be 67 next month, is a retired Suffern High School psychologist. But “retired” is far from the right word for Winfield, who trains two-to-three hours a day year-round and says, “I love sweating and going out and pushing myself.”

Staying in shape has always been a priority, partly because at 9, Winfield lost his 46-year-old dad to a heart attack linked to a childhood bout with rheumatic fever.

Winfield grew up in then-pint-sized Tuxedo. There were 19 kids in his graduating class, and baseball and basketball were the only high school sports. But his dad — a hiker, canoeist and strong swimmer who once swam across the Hudson at the Tappan Zee Bridge — taught him to swim.

Those early lessons and a good municipal swimming program later helped Winfield make the swim team at Manhattan College, where he did “relatively well.”

*** and ***

His family was on hand last month when he won his five-man division at the .9-mile-swim, 25-mile-bike, 6.2-mile-run Westchester Triathlon, where his 2:53:81 clocking placed him 508th out of 1,009 finishers.

JOBIT: Swartz, Warren [MC???? RIP]

http://obituaries.pressherald.com/obituaries/mainetoday-pressherald/obituary.aspx?n=warren-swartz&pid=154056095

Warren Swartz, 77

SANFORD — Local resident and civic leader, Warren Swartz, went to rest on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at the age of 77.

Born on June 16, 1934, to Harold and Margaret Swartz in Brooklyn, N.Y., he distinguished himself in sports and music. While at Manhattan College, Warren met and later married Merle Joan White, his wife of 56 years.

In 1954, Warren joined the defense industry as a machinist for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and began working with the emerging jet engine technology manufacturing division in Connecticut. During that time Warren was very active in the community as a Little League baseball coach and on the building committee for the local Notre Dame Church. In 1979 he was selected to head up the team responsible for building, staffing and operating a new manufacturing plant in North Berwick, which successfully opened in 1980 and is still in operation today.

While in Sanford, Warren served as president of the Town Club, was a member of the Sanford Kiwanis Club, and a Sergeant in the local Salvation Army. He volunteered to tutor children at Sanford High School and Sanford Junior High School, served on the finance committee of the H.D. Goodall Hospital, was chairman of the town Warrant Committee, and a leader in the Right to Life movement.

Retirement did not slow him down as he served on the Federal Grand Jury in Portland and worked as a field worker for the National Census Bureau. His life-long interest in cars led him to seek part- time employment at Auto Zone in Sanford, where he worked until his passing. He worked on the committee to build the new Goodall Park in town and was a long-time supporter of the Sanford Mainers summer baseball team serving as a host family for many players. Warren touched many lives and hearts and will be missed by all.

A man of many opinions, Warren shared them in columns he wrote for both the Portland Press Herald and the Journal Tribune for several years.

Survivors include his wife Joan Swartz of Sanford; son Kevin Swartz of California, daughter Cynthia Swartz and her husband Steve Holmes of Wallingford, Conn., son Stephen Swartz and his wife Leslie of Denton, Texas, son Lawrence Swartz and his wife Annie of Plympton, Mass.; sister Peggy Richards of Rhode Island; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

At the request of the family no public memorial service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Condolences may be expressed at www.blackfuneralhomes.com.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider: The Salvation Army P. O. Box 391 Sanford, Maine 04073
