Update on the fundraiser for Veliz, Tierney [MC2011]

# – # – #

Just giving you a quick update, Hampton Rotary golf outing is coming along well for Tierney Veliz, we had someone donate $2000.00 dollars to our cause and we passed that along to her last week. When I get the brochures printed up, we have a sports writer from the Star Ledger and a big time business man as honorary chair person, can I have a mailing address to send the brochure to any maybe some how you can spread the word to alumina, our goal is at least $20,000 or in like donations such as computers, ramps to make Tierney’s life easier. She is doing well, looks great and has the heart of a lion, hopefully soon a van to drive and going for her masters in the near future. She is a waking miracle, never seen anything like it, be well,

MEMAIL: Predmore, Carolyn E. (MCfaculty) shares a mashup of Villanova and MC

Hi John,

Our college president was at the meeting in DC where the Villanova Pastoral Choir sang for the gathering.  Lizz is second from the right.  She thinks that Villanova was the only college choir that sang for the group – it was on that Saturday – Jan 28, but who knows about the other days.  Don’t know if this makes Jasper Jottings – but it was a cute mashup of Villanova and MC.

Best,
Carolyn

MEMAIL: Jasper is having email account control problems

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE EMAIL NEWS DESK IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM …

from a Jasper, but id info redacted to prevent further problems … …

# – # – #

Hi Everyone,

This morning you may have received an email from our former email account (XXXXXXX@aol.com) with a link to a graphic website. If you did, please do not open it or click on the link; this is a virus and will send similar emails from your account to your entire address book.

The way this all began (as far as we know it) is that we received an email from someone we know earlier this week. Not thinking anything of it, we opened the email and clicked on the link. What we received was a very graphic undesirable ADULT website to say the least. Since then I notified the sender and they claim that they did not send any emails but checked sent mail and they were in the same situation we are in now. The VIRUS somehow latches onto your email address book and sends out emails without you knowing it. The subject line may be different each time….Our initial email Subject Line was “In Best Regards”….the ones sent from our account is “No Subject” or totally blank.

So…..

Our former email addresses will all be deleted and we will be primarily using our new email address: YYYYYYYY@yahoo.com

We hope that your computer does not receive the same VIRUS that we got.

We hope that you are all well.

# – # – #

Dear Jasper ZZZZZZZZ,

I think if you do some more research you’ll find that the problem originates from your AOL or YAHOO account being hacked. GMAIL seems immune. At least, that’s what I have found on the several cases I’ve looked into for friends.

I recommend that you put in “QQQQ @ {Privacy Invoked}” in your address book. Since it’s an address you’d never use, any email received on that account would indicate there’s a problem. I have my own domain so this is zero effort on my part to setup. I do it for several people.

Use a complex robust long password and you’ll probably avoid the problem in the future.

Consider using LASTPASS, a free password management tool. Makes the whole job easier.

Good luck,
fjohn68

# # # # #

May I suggest that you have your own domain? The common wisdom, or is that common whizdumb, is to own your own name as a domain name. I own “reinke.cc”. (I like saying “sea sea me at reinke.cc”! ) I gives one quite a bit of control. And, it’s very cheap. I know three solutions at 25$/year using wordpressdotcom with gmail, 25$/year email only with 1and1, and 60$/year for domain+email+webspace also at 1and1. My point is not that you should use 1and1. http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=9113251 I could care less which one you use. It’s that getting on to your own domain with email is cheap and easy. And, it’s not hotmail, yahoo, or gmail. It IS your own “personal brand”.

MEMAIL: Jokes about injineers

EMAIL FORWARDED FROM A NON-ENGINEER JASPER

John: I thought you could appreciate these. As a techno-geek I loved #7 myself.

# – # – #

Subject: Understanding Engineers

It’s not possible to understand Engineers. They are strange!

Understanding Engineers #1

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, “Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.” The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, “Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn’t have fit you anyway.”

Understanding Engineers #2

To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Understanding Engineers #3

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, “What’s with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!” The doctor chimed in, “I don’t know, but I’ve never seen such inept golf!” The priest said, “Here comes the greens-keeper. Let’s have a word with him.” He said, “Hello George, What’s wrong with that group ahead of us? They’re rather slow, aren’t they?” The greens-keeper replied, “Oh, yes. That’s a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime.” The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, “That’s so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight.” The doctor said, “Good idea. I’m going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there’s anything she can do for them.” The engineer said, “Why can’t they play at night?”

Understanding Engineers #4

What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers? Mechanical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.

Understanding Engineers #5

The graduate with a science degree asks, “Why does it work?” The graduate with an engineering degree asks, “How does it work?” The graduate with an accounting degree asks, “How much will it cost?” The graduate with an arts degree asks, “Do you want fries with that?”

Understanding Engineers #6

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body. One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.” Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections.” The last one said, “No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?”

Understanding Engineers #7

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

Understanding Engineers #8

An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn into a beautiful princess.” He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said, “If you kiss me, I’ll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week.” The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out, “If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I’ll stay with you for one week and do anything you want.” Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, “What is the matter? I’ve told you I’m a beautiful princess and that I’ll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won’t you kiss me?” The engineer said, “Look, I’m an engineer. I don’t have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog – now that’s cool.”

JEMAIL: Walsh, Kevin (MC1980) instructs on the “general calendar”

A little further info on my classmate’s question:

In the pre-Vatican II calendar, the feast day of St. John Baptist de La Salle was May 15, the anniversary of his being proclaimed Patron of Christian Teachers.

When the general calendar was reformed after Vatican II, his feast date was moved to April 7, since most saints are commemorated on the day of their death–the day of their entrance into eternal life. It has the rank of Memorial (which gets downgraded to Optional Memorial in Lent–and eliminated when it falls in Holy Week or the Octave of Easter). Hence, we see this commemoration in our missalettes this year for April 7, with the rank of “Optional Memorial”.

However…in the proper calendar of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, this date remains May 15, and it would be a “Proper Solemnity”. (Just like the ‘Optional Memorial” of St. Patrick on March 17 is a “Proper Solemnity” in the Archdiocese of New York.). My guess is that they opted to keep the traditional date to avoid conflicts with Holy Week and the Octave of Easter.

Kevin Walsh ’80

[JR: Wow, that's a message full. Didn't realize it was a PhD level topic. Glad I didn't take all those beating to lean 15 May for no reason at all. Only to have it change. :-) Guess it couldn't be too simple, then us fat old white guy injineers wouldn't have anything left to learn. Thanks.]

MEMAIL: Father Dan responds to my defense of MC

Dear Mr. Reinke,

I wondered if I would receive a comment from someone who was specifically concerned with Manhattan College! (I should note that I have been on retreat the last several days, so I only found your e-mail this afternoon when I accessed the Internet for the first time since Sunday.)

I ask you, first, to view what I wrote through the lens of what it is: a Sunday homily to my parishioners in Maryland, far from NYC. My purpose in citing the NLRB-Manhattan College investigation was to use it as a tool to help my parishioners to better understand Jesus’ words about salt and light, and to apply them introspectively to their own lives, right here and now. The spectacle of a government agency digging into a Catholic college’s claims about its religious identity and practice seemed wonderfully useful for this purpose.

At the same time, however, I did read and think about both the NLRB’s document, and Manhattan College’s press release in response; and I do have some brief observations to make directly to that situation. And I have to say that I find Manhattan College’s response, however “eloquent,” to be quite a red herring; and I would urge you to think more carefully about what both sides are saying, and not just jump blindly to the defense of alma mater. Love means desiring the good of the loved one; and one thing we should desire of the loved one is that they be honest and truthful.

As the NLRB summarizes in their document, they have a mandate from the government that involves overseeing and taking certain actions related to labor organizing within certain organizations/businesses. But they have a big exception: a “church-operated school” is exempt from their jurisdiction. Why? Because, as we can well imagine, and as they explain, if a school is truly governed by a church organization, is funded by it, sets goals of indoctrinating its students in belief and practice, and imposes requirements of belief and practice when hiring its employees– well, there is no way for the NLRB to do its labor-related job in such an institution without becoming entangled in religion, and so it is just supposed to stay out.

So, the NLRB has concluded that Manhattan College does not qualify as a “church-operated school.” Which seems like an obviously correct conclusion to me, based upon what I read.

Now, Manhattan College has responded that it is being a good Catholic college, and the NLRB just doesn’t understand what a Catholic college is, and is bringing in foreign concepts about how it should be indoctrinating etc. But that is a red herring.

It is the NLRB’s mandate and definitions that are in question here. It is Manhattan College that has been claiming that it meets the NLRB’s definition of a “church-operated school.” And it seems clear that it does not meet this definition.

Why then is Manhattan College trying to claim this? And why, when the truth is pointed out, is it trying to cloud the issue? (Do you notice that, in both the press release and the president’s letter, the key NLRB phrase “church-operated school” is never used once?) And why, still further, is it trying to evade the NLRB’s oversight in the first place? In trying to evade some sort of labor organizing, is it acting contrary to Catholic teaching on the just treatment of labor?

I ask these questions rhetorically. Of course it doesn’t want government interference; no one does. Of course it doesn’t want to deal with a union; no one does. But it doesn’t seem to be scoring high in being truthful, as far as I can see.

Have you read the NLRB document? Here it is: http://www.nyorganizing.org/Manhattan/DDE.2-RC-23543.ManhattanCollege..PDF

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Dan Gallaugher

# – # – #

Father Dan,

I hope your retreat went well. I knew you were away from your OOO message. And, yes, I did read the NLRB “decision”.

My consternation with the whole affair is that no one has expressed how the adjuncts are being mistreated. Why should there be a union in the first place? If the MC Administration is doing something terrible, then the alumni would be interested. I can understand why “liberals” would like to have a “union” on a Catholic College so as to enforce its beliefs upon the “victim”. As far as I can tell, no one has asserted that MC is not treating its “labor” fairly (i.e., in any way contrary to Church teaching).

I think I’ve already hit my best points: (1) jurisdiction of the NLRB; (2) their competence in deciding what’s “catholic enough”; and (3) the First Amendment. Having been forced to fight in the Gooferment’s dojo, one can’t complain when one fights with the only weapons one has. The NLRB can’t be allowed to define the vocabulary (i.e., “church run whatever”); the First Amendment trumps the NLRB. If the Archdiocese of New York hasn’t “de-listed” MC, then I’d assert that it meets the “Catholic enough” standard.

As far as the homily, I’m sure that it always hard to explain “salt” to Americans who probably never have had salt go bad. The exemplar might better be America after the War of Northern Aggression. That was the turning point of “government interference”. You say that no one wants it, but I’m not so sure that’s true. When there are more “takers” than “earners”? When there is such a thing as an “illegal alien”? And when the Government “kills” The Church with its diktats. The “salt” of the great American Experiment is tasteless.

I hope you’ll think better of MC, and its Jaspers.

Thanks for your response,
fjohn68
