This has the potential to be really cool: I might be going to the Dominican Republic in March! I’m on the board for L.O.V.E. (Lasallian Outreach Volunteer Experience), which is Manhattan College’s service trip program. At our last meeting, we decided to add two new trips, one to Galveston, TX during January and one to DR during spring break. I am unavailable during January (LONDON YAY, although if I wasn’t going to to London, I’d be in New Orleans, so I wasn’t going to Texas either way), so I said I’d be totally interested in DR. Also, I might be co-leading this trip. Jenn (our coordinator) said that since these trips are new, she’d prefer to have 2 leaders for each, and she’d prefer that the leaders this time around came from the board, since we are all trustworthy. Katie B. and DJ will probably lead the TX trip, but Emily, Dave, and I all said we want to do the DR, so who knows. Right now, nothing is confirmed, but I think I have a really good chance of getting to go if the trip does end up going ahead.

AGE: 95 SPRING LAKE HEIGHTS

Genevieve Florence Dodd Range, 95, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Genevieve had been employed as the executive secretary to the dean of orthodontics at Columbia Presbyterian University Hospital, New York, for 10 years; she also had been the secretary to the publicity director of the College of Mount St. Vincent, New York City, and also was the assistant to the registrar at Manhattan College. Gen was a proud New Yorker for 65 years. She graduated with honors from St. Augustine Grammar School and attended Roosevelt High School in the Bronx. Gen was an inspirational and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid swimmer and walker and could be seen walking around the lake in Spring Lake with her favorite pet, Lucy. She was known and loved by many of the town’s merchants. Gen was loved by her family, friends and by the friends of her children. She was an enthusiastic and rabid Yankee fan who cheered Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Phil Rizzuto and Derek Jeter. Gen loved the Sisters of Charity and was deeply grateful to them for her education and the education of her children and her grandchildren. Her love of life, people, music and nature was inspirational. Born in New York City, she had resided in Riverdale, the Bronx for 65 years and then in Asbury Park before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1994. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Margaret’s Parish, Riverdale, for 40 years, and a life member of the Asbury Park Elks Lodge.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Mary McGrail Dodd; her husband, Walter R. Range, in 1989; her siblings, William and Thomas Dodd, Anna Ford, Mary Rausch and Grace Mueller; and her son-in-law, John J. Byrne. Surviving are her devoted daughters, Adele Byrne of Brielle, and Arlene “Beanie” and Patrick McDonald of Spring Lake; eight beloved grandchildren, John, Beth, Peter, Matthew, Patrick, Wally, Marc and David; and 13 great-grandchildren, Seton, Caitlin, Grace, Quintin, Chloe, Genevieve, Thomas, Peter, James, Kathleen, Jackson, Julianna and Evie.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Entombment will be in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Peaceworks-Musameco, 701 Third Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762, or the College of Mount St. Vincent, Development Office, 6301 Riverdale Ave., Riverdale, NY 10471, in her memory.

WISHMAKER 2008 TO BE HELD SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19TH

Brookhaven, NY- The Dowling College Lacrosse team and Dowling College Athletics will play host to the 1st annual Wishmaker Fall Classic Tournament at Golden Lions Field on Sunday, October 19th.

Thanks to the participating schools of the tournament, Dowling College, Manhattan College, C.W. Post, and Sacred Heart University, all proceeds from the event will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Division II Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has a longstanding commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants the heartfelt wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. The student-athlete group has raised almost $500,000 since the launch of its fundraising initiative for the charity, with the most recent efforts marking the largest amount raised by the group in any single academic year.

“We’re very excited about this event as this is a very important initiative to not only Dowling, but also Division II athletics as a whole.” said Men’s Lacrosse head coach and event organizer Tim Boyle. “We have a lot of great teams coming out this first year and we hope to gain even more momentum each following Fall Classic.”

50/50 raffles will be taking place as well as raffles for prizes donated by the various institutions and sponsors. In addition, a tailgating party will take place to the east of the main field all day. Come show your support and root on your favorite team for a good cause! On Monday morning, a day after her oldest daughter celebrated her seventieth birthday, Genevieve Florence Range passed away at the age of 95 in New Jersey. She was my grandmother, friend, and one of the major influences in my life.

Grandma, as her eight grandkids called her, was everything you wanted in a grandmother. She was, among many other things, always loving, always smiling, and always supportive. When I came out of the closet several years ago, I was living in Los Angeles, far away from my family who live in Spring Lake, New Jersey. So my mother sat down Grandma to tell her the news. She was 88 at the time, and Mom was a little nervous about what she would think.

Gen eventually graduated from St. Augustine Grammar School and then made it through two years of high school. By junior year at Roosevelt High, her oldest brother, Bill, told her it was time to get a job. So she found work at Western Union in Manhattan. Gen later worked as a secretary at Mount Saint Vincent College and Manhattan College. Her last job was as an executive secretary at Columbia University, where she retired at the age of 65.

Genevieve Range was a fun gal from The Bronx, and she always said she lived a good life. I’ll miss her, but I also have enduring memories of my grandmother, and all of them, in bright Technicolor, make me smile or laugh out loud. It’s probably the best gift any grandma can give a grandchild. Thank you.

Thomas J. O’Connor

O’CONNOR, Thomas J. Thomas J. O’Connor, 62, of Wethersfield, husband of Kathryn (Socha) O’Connor, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 5, 2008. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Murphy) O’Connor. He attended Manhattan College and received his MS degree from CCSU. During Tom’s 20 years of teaching at South Catholic and Wethersfield High Schools, he inspired, with his unique style, the youth of Wethersfield to achieve and excel academically as a teacher and athletically as a coach of cross country and track. Tom had a gift for teaching his students to think and write critically and many have credited him with being instrumental in their success at college. Tom was an avid runner, having run in over 50 marathons. His other passions included playing guitar, motorcycling and writing. Besides his wife, Tom is survived by two children; a son, Michael, of Asheville, NC and a daughter, Meg, of Wethersfield; five sisters, Eileen, Fran and Siobhan O’Connor, Dolores Oglia and Pat Huene as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. A Memorial Funeral Service will be held Thursday October 9 at 1 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Plainville. Manhattan College To Host Three-Day Visit By Mexican Coffee Farmer As Part Of Fair Trade Month

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College’s office of campus ministry and social action (CMSA) and the student group JustPeace will host a coffee farmer from Mexico in the Bronx and on campus from Oct. 8-10. This is possible due to a small grant from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to promote fair trade.

Rigoberto Contreras Diaz’s visit to the Bronx will begin on Wednesday evening, Oct. 8, with a meeting at Our Lady of Refuge Parish, where he will address a largely Spanish speaking community about his work and the value of fair trade coffee to this family and community. As part of the meeting, fair trade coffee will be served and a free sample of the company’s chocolate will be distributed along with brochures on fair trade handcrafts from around the world.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Diaz will visit Spanish classes on the Manhattan College campus and is scheduled to speak (in Spanish with translation) in the Alumni Room of O’Malley Library at 4:30 p.m. Coffee and chocolates will again be served during the event, which is free and open to the public.

Last spring, Manhattan students involved in the social justice club JustPeace received a Fair Trade Market Building grant from CRS. The grant will help the students who work closely with CMSA to raise awareness throughout October (Fair Trade Month), as well as sponsor a symposium for local Catholic colleges in the spring.

The Fair Trade Federation is the trade association that strengthens and promotes North American organizations fully committed to fair trade. The federation is part of the global fair trade movement, which builds equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creates opportunities to alleviate poverty.

CRS is the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community. Its mission is to alleviate suffering and provide assistance to needy people in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion or nationality.

There is something about sick children that tugs at the heartstrings. I have no use for a cookbook, OTOH I could use the “Caitlin Diet Book”! John C. Donahue Jr.

NORTHFIELD - John C. Donahue Jr., 88, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, of cancer, at home.

He was born July 24, 1920, in Lynn, Mass., the son of Kathleen (Martin) Donahue and John C. Donahue Sr.

He was a longtime newspaperman whose career spanned 75 years from 1933 to 2008, including as editor and publisher of The Northfield News and Transcript, which he sold in July. He had started The Northfield Transcript in retirement in 1999, and published it until 2001. In 2007 he bought the 129-year-old Northfield News and combined it with the revived Transcript.

At the age of 12, Mr. Donahue and his cousin, the late Thomas A. Donahue, established the (Northfield) Falls News, a summer weekly that continued for five years. He worked his way through high school and college on various newspapers.

He had worked for Bostonian magazine, the Boston Transcript, United Press, the Burlington Daily News, Vermont Sunday News, The Washington Post, the (Braintree, Mass.) Sunday Forum, the Boston Evening Globe, Suburban Trends in Butler, N.J., and the Daily Record of Morristown, N.J.

Mr. Donahue taught journalism at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and served as publisher of the student daily, the Purdue Exponent.

He retired in 1992 and returned to Northfield.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

He was educated in schools in Northfield Falls and St. Albans, in Massachusetts, Ohio, New York and New Jersey. He graduated from Manhattan College in New York in 1942 with a bachelor of arts degree in English and history. He did graduate work at the New School for Social Research in New York, at the University of Vermont, the University of Rhode Island, the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of the Université de Paris and the Università Italiana per Stranieri in Perugia, Italy.

He married Marie Maurice Christiane de Vitry d’Avaucourt in Paris in 1953. She survives him.

He is also survived by three sons, John C. Donahue III of Denville, N.J., Pierre M. Donahue of Takoma Park, Md., and Marc T.C. Donahue of Monticello, Ind.; three daughters, Anne de la B. Donahue of Northfield, Christiane K. Donahue of Northfield, and Mayalen Mary Donahue of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Meg Donahue Davis of Northfield, and seven grandchildren as well as many cousins and other relatives in Northfield.

He was predeceased a sister, Frances D. Leach of Burlington.

Mr. Donahue was a member of the O’Donoghue Society - Royal Order of Eoghanacht O Donnchadha of Ireland, the Manhattan College Alumni, the Northfield Historical Society, St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Sorrel-Maynard Post 63 American Legion.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Vine Street, Northfield, with burial following at Calvary Cemetery.

I have heard John Dear speak on a number of occasions and he is quite inspiring. Whether or not you agree with his pacifist ideals, his words and his actions are a challenge to all of us to consider how Jesus asks us to live. Fr. John is the real deal, having put his own life and freedom on the line a number of times to live out his beliefs. I would heartily recommend his talk to any who are able to attend.

One hopes that everyone can look at this and laugh. Heaven help us if we become so sensitive that we can’t. I always try to look at my affectations, my priorities, and the things I think are important, like Jasper Jottings, and laugh at my own pomposity. (Is that a wurd?) Imagine an injineer seeking to report like a gazetteer on alumni stuff, connect his fellow alums with each other, lecture them on liberty, instruct them on Austrian economic, and make social commentary. Who does he think he is? Just a fellow alum, well aware of his limitations, trying to do a ‘job’ that seems worth doing to him.

My hope is this week, if you can’t laugh at SNL, if you can’t laugh at yourself, you can laugh at my pretensions. At least then, we’ll be sharing a laugh together. Because I laugh at myself a lot.

RIVERA, Belen, 73, of Tampa, passed away October 2, 2008. She was a Catholic. Born to Edelmiro and Dolores Colon in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, she was a graduate of Manhattan College and had resided in Tampa since 1990. A loving wife, mother and grand-mother, she is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Jorge Rivera Diaz; son, Jorge (Maricel Rey) Rivera; daughter, Belen Rivera Garcia; daughter, Lourdes Rivera Colon, and son-in-law, Lou Garcia; grand-children Myrna Rivera and Alex Frantzeskakis; brother, Cristobal (Gloria) Colon; sister, Raquel (Ramon) Torres; and numerous nieces, nephews and relatives. She was an avid golfer and world traveler and had a passion for music, poetry writing and painting. She will be missed by all. Services will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2008, at St. Marks Catholic Church. Interment will follow the service at 1 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery. Brother Michael Dougherty, F.S.C., 82, of De La Salle Hall, Lincroft, Middletown, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, at De La Salle Hall. Brother Michael was born in Newburgh, N.Y. and received the Holy Habit of the Christian Brothers on Sept. 7, 1942. He was a graduate of Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and received a Master of Art Degree in mathematics from Manhattan College in 1956 and a Master of Science Degree from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y. in 1964. He was a former president of the Catholic High School Freshman Basketball League. Brother Michael’s assignments included Christian Brothers Academy, Albany, N.Y., La Salle Institute, New York City, Manhattan Prep, New York City, where he served as athletic director, St. Joseph’s Novitiate Institute, Barrytown, N.Y., Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, N.Y., where he served as vice principal, and Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at De La Salle Hall, Lincroft. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at De La Salle Hall, followed by interment at the Christian Brothers section of St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Marlboro. Oliver Abel, 54, teaches finance at Manhattan College and owns Oliver’s Chocolates in Ridgewood. He watches Wall Street from the perspective of a former investment banker, and is appalled at the “greed and the lack of responsibility” shown by the leaders of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and other crisis-ridden institutions.

“I’m concerned about the long-term effects,” Abel said. “I’m teaching college students who are demoralized by what’s going on. … They are trying to learn the correct way to run a business and all they are seeing is this tremendous greed and disregard for shareholder responsibility.”

He is disgusted that the banking industry has left the public to bail them out, he said. “The banks had one long, huge party, they got drunk, and we all have to clean it up,” Abel said.

“I feel very sorry for the retirees with fixed incomes,” he added. “They didn’t do anything wrong and now they are bearing the brunt from the party.”

Speakers?

Hello, My name is Stephen and this is my first time posting in the community. I’m an Environmental Engineer at Manhattan College and an active member of NYWEA (New York Water Environment Association).

We’ve been given the opportunity to have several nights each semester for guest speakers to come to the school. In the past we’ve had people such as the deputy commissioner of the DEP, Alumni of the school who’ve gone o to work for consulting firms like Malcolm Pirnie and Hazen and Sawyer, and even lawyers who specialize in environmental issues.

My question to the community is this: Do you know of anyone else who would make a good speaker? We’re looking for people from the New York City area who aren’t too expensive. Anything to do with Green Construction, Alternative energy, or even just recycling on a small scale is fine.

If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Also, if you are from the Bronx or surrounding area most of these events are open to the public so you should check them out. Thanks!

Cartoonist And Comic Book Theorist Scott McCloud To Speak At Manhattan College

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Cartoonist and comic book theorist Scott McCloud will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Smith Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

McCloud’s talk is the fall semester’s scheduled college writing lecture to accompany Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, a wise, funny and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.

McCloud is the author of Understanding Comics (1993), a 215-page book about comics that has been translated into more than 16 languages. He also has written Reinventing Comics (2000), a more controversial look at comics revolutions in art, culture and technology, and Making Comics (2006), an extensive look at comics storytelling techniques.

A native of Boston, Mass., McCloud in 1984 created the light-hearted science fiction/superhero comic book series Zot!, which he describes as a “cross between Peter Pan, Buck Rogers and Marshall McLuhan.” His other print comics include Destroy!!, scripts for various Superman comics, a 1998 series The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln, and various short subjects and mini-comics.
