It seems like a simple recipe for success, but a little more than five years ago, singer Nicole Frechette ’06 hadn’t crossed out any of the steps on her list.

Fast forward to 2012 and Frechette has not only conquered A through C dozens of times, but also has built her name as a rising star in the country pop circuit – making the trek from her home in Madison, Conn., to Nashville, Tenn., as often as possible.

Her most recent trip to the capital of country music in January felt different though, she explained, as if all of the puzzle pieces were finally coming together.

This time, 26-year-old Frechette arrived to find hosts of people eager to help her market her brand, produce her new album and mentor her song-writing process.

To those who know the humble songstress, it should come as no surprise that Frechette’s supporters are lining up to see her off to stardom. After all, she’s given them quite a lot to smile about in recent months.

After a friend left to serve in Afghanistan, Frechette was inspired to spend two weeks in July and August performing for American troops at Army bases in Germany and Kosovo.

“I love working with charities and those who deserve support and notoriety,” Frechette says, referring to the international tour as the glue that’s kept her year together. “It’s proof to me that there’s a nice way to do what I want to do, that I don’t have to resent [this lifestyle] ever. There are good ways to do things.”

President Travels Around the World to Witness Global Catholic Work

Since Manhattan College was first established in 1853, it has been committed to an educational mission that puts service to others at its core. When Manhattan’s president, Brennan O’Donnell, Ph.D., recently received an invitation to travel to Africa to witness the work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), he saw it as an opportunity to deepen the College’s connection with the U.S. Catholic Church’s preeminent global service organization.

“I hope that the college presidents who went with us on this trip, including President O’Donnell, got to see how we are all part of one human family, and how solidarity really can transform the world. I hope they also saw how we learn from those we serve,” says Ken Hackett, former president of CRS, who traveled with the delegation. “Finally, I hope they were inspired to find ways to collaborate with CRS to bring our experience on the ground.”

On Jan. 9, O’Donnell traveled from New York City to the city of Kigali in Rwanda, a nation that is still recovering from the 1994 genocide that killed approximately 1 million people. Accompanied by Mary Lyons, Ph.D., president of the University of San Diego; Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Ph.D., president of Marywood University; and Rev. Stephen Privett, S.J., president of the University of San Francisco; O’Donnell and the group began their trip throughout Rwanda and Burundi with CRS.

CRS is the official humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community and is dedicated to assisting impoverished and disadvantaged people around the world regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. The organization started its work in Rwanda more than 50 years ago and planned a full itinerary for the group to hear about the history, culture and progress CRS and its partners have made there.

Major Gen. Patrick Murphy, adjutant general and commander of the state’s militia forces, presented the medal to Genereux during the ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Jan. 14.

Genereux received recognition for leading New York Army National Guard soldiers through the Army’s transition from the Cold War, through the Gulf War and into the new millennium’s overseas contingency operations in Iraq and Aghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center and elsewhere.

Joseph Zambito has had a fascination with mechanical systems since he was a kid, spending hours in his grandfather’s garage taking things apart, reassembling them and learning how they worked. He says it was that curiosity that led him to pursue an engineering career. He attended Manhattan College, earning a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2010. Zambito currently works as a project engineer in his firm’s energy business department. His projects include work for the New York City Housing Authority’s Hot Water Heater Replacement program and the award-winning Wards Island Water Pollution-Control Plant. He was selected as a project engineer to work on his current project, the Rikers Island Cogeneration Plant. Zambito has traveled the United States under his firm’s contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, using his technical knowledge to mitigate damages and provide economic relief for communities ravaged by natural disasters. In 2008, while still in school, he worked closely with the Engineers-Without-Borders, New York Chapter, doing research in conjunction with Columbia University and traveling to Uganda. He has now been to Uganda twice with Columbia students to design and install engine components for agricultural equipment and rainwater harvesting systems for a war-torn school. AECOM has presented him with its Making A Difference award for exemplary work within the company.

It is a good question you ask there – when is it?

And I think what we should agree on is that people of faith and goodwill disagree about the answer – and should be allowed to decide for themselves.

If you think it is the “moment of conception” – then you should never consider terminating a pregnancy.

But others- following their own consciences – may not believe that’s when “it” is and should not be demonized for not believing the same thing as you.

This is one where we should stay our of other people’s ethical and moral reasoning.

Your endnote of 2/4/12 indicates that the Department of Health and Human Services ruling was about abortion and sterilization. It was not. It was about birth control. The Catholic Church has their “head in the sand.” More than 95 percent of Catholics in the US have practiced birth control. The less birth control there is, the more abortions there are. Do you believe that it is a bad thing for anyone to practice birth control?

Despite promising that exemption to Catholic Democrats, the Obama administration has reneged. John, I agree with your endnote that it is time to stage a counter-offensive against the secular progressives at work in our government who are staging a stealth war against all religion, and Catholicism in particular.

I suggest that the American bishops announce that anyone who publicly promotes or supports the government’s imposition of mandated healthcare insurance requirements that include insurance paid abortion and/or contraceptive services upon Catholic institutions in violation of their First Amendment religious freedom rights will be publicly excommunicated.  That should put every nominally Catholic politician (like Nancy Pelosi) between a rock and a hard spot, as they must chose between supporting their political party bosses or the moral teachings of the Church, all under the watchful eyes of their Christian constituents who have the power to retain them or dethrone them from their elected offices.

I look forward to watching those phonies squirm under those conditions, as their true principles are revealed.  This represents a critical juncture for the American Catholic Church, and our church leaders must show the courage to take this fight directly to the attackers of our religious freedoms, so that our government does not continue to trample our rights and our Constitution to a point where a Second American Revolution becomes necessary.

Obama vs. Catholics
So when to the TV networks notice that Team Obama has an ideological agenda against faith-based charitable organizations, most especially the Catholic Church? Across the country, Democrats have been pushing Catholic social workers out of government cooperation.

Take the order promulgated by Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services on Friday to require virtually all employers to offer insurance coverage of sterilization, abortifacients, and contraceptives without deductibles or co-pays in their employee plans by August 1. Churches are exempt, but not religiously inspired hospitals, schools, and other charities that hire outside their faith tradition.

“The government should not force Americans to act as if pregnancy is a disease to be prevented at all costs,” insisted Archbishop (and Cardinal-designate) Timothy Dolan of New York, head of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops. “Historically this represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty.”

That’s putting it mildly. What it means is that the Catholic Church is faced with closing down its hospitals, universities, and charities – or committing mortal sin.

I know readers here think I’m a real tin foil hat. The Gooferment at war with the Catholic Church, Christianity, and organized religion? Impossible! Couldn’t happen here.

Remember Waco?

So when are we going to stand up for our First Amendment rights?

You only have the rights that you are willing to fight for.

I’ll go one step further. We should be pushing back with an Human Life Amendment. How about “With respect to the right to life, the word ‘person,’ as used in this article and in the fifth and fourteenth articles of amendment to the Constitution of the United States, applies to all human beings, including their unborn offspring at every stage of their biological development, irrespective of age, health, function, or condition of dependency.”

Now as a little L libertarian, I don’t want to put the Gooferment in charge of woman’s body, or insert anything between a woman and her doctor. By the same token, we are killing ourselves as a species. There has to be a middle ground.

Let’s go on the offensive?

When ”Secular Progressive” say that “the rich aren’t paying their fare share”, and Bill O’Reilly pushes back with “What’s Fair?” and waits for a number. They wriggle like speared fish. Andrew Neapolitano does it even better: “Who gets to decide what’s fair?”

We need to push back. It’s not about abortion. It’s about when does life begin? When do those inalienable rights inure to “a person”? “Among these are the Right to Life, Liberty, and Property.”

So when is it?

Certainly, we can all agree that it’s some point between conception and the child’s 21st birthday.

So when is it?

Let’s stand up for OUR rights.

If they can kill babies, American citizens without due process, or anyone who’s unlucky enough to to be in the way of drone strike, then it won’t be long before they will be killing us fat old white guy injineers because it’s too expensive to care for us.

So when is it?
