Guess that's why I'm an old "Swiftie", I can understand the words. But then I'm just a fat old white guy injineer and nobody's target market. "Outasight" was loud and rhythmic. Reminded me of the old National Geographic film clips of African tribal dances. And, we all know why young boys remember those. Yeah, I know. Off to confession.]

The Manhattan College dining halls are very unpredictable, to say the least. At times, students can be very pleased with the food and love it. But then, the very next day, students can be very upset with the food and hate it—mostly Locke’s Loft. Luckily, Locke’s is a buffet-style diner and if you don’t like some of the foods in one section, you can get food from another section. Dante’s Den is also a diner that is fairly inconsistent with the food selection. They also require students to purchase food by using money on their student ID cards. Plato’s Cave is the most consistent cafeteria. It has a deli where students can make their own sandwiches (like Subway). It also has a section for hot food (chicken tenders, french fries, etc.). This diner is open until 11 p.m., but at that point, students need ACDs to get food. ACDs, or à la carte dining dollars, are part of a declining balance account which can be used at any dining facility for à la carte purchases. However, for the rest of the day, students do not need ACDs.

The Leo Engineering Building has its own cafeteria, so engineering students don’t have to walk back to campus and then back down for classes. This cafeteria requires student meal swipes and is pretty decent; it is also right next to the campus bookstore. Overall, students may complain about dining’s consistency with good food, but there is something for everybody. You will never see a student not eating—there is always something for everybody. Manhattan College may not be like other colleges and have some big-time restaurants or fast food places, but the dining halls are decent. If you don’t want anything from the College, you could always walk right down to Broadway and eat at many of the off-campus spots, like Burger King or Chinese.

This is intended to be the beginning of a new series for the group: Literary LGBT History. We’ll analyze books and writers in a discovery/recovery effort. This first diary presents the work of the (perhaps) cult writer James McCourt.

Who, you ask? Actually, a chronicler of gay New York in the second half of the twentieth century, some interesting books in a hit-and-miss opus.

From The East Hampton Star, we learn that McCourt was born July 4 1941 in Flushing Hospital. He grew up in Jackson Heights near the #7 IRT line, and went to Catholic schools. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1962. He then earned an M.A. at New York University and went on to study acting at Yale Drama School.

After Lindenhurst High School, I went to St. Bonaventure University, and then to Yale Graduate School where in 1964 I met my life-partner, the writer James McCourt who had a deep and abiding friendship with the musical genius Victoria de los Angeles. Jimmy and I went to live in London for nearly 5 years before returning home to NYC for the publication of his story Mawrdew Czgowchwz and for the making of a life in the city of my dreams.

Manhattan may be king when it comes to real-estate eye candy, but the other boroughs certainly have their share of bling, and I recently made it my mission to get a first-hand glimpse.

A woman named Genevieve Ludlow Griscom, she said, pointing to an article, is said to have built the house. She was a member of a religious community and they called it Chapel Farm and used the grounds as a retreat.

“Although Mrs. Griscom oversaw every detail of the mansion’s construction, neither she [nor] anyone else ever lived there, prompting neighbors to whisper she was waiting for the second coming of Christ,” the article says.

The estate was sold to Manhattan College at some point and Ms. Galuten and her husband, the late Jerry Galuten, bought the land-lease in 1987.

Fires and vandals had gutted most of the house by that time and so the renovation process began—one that took them nine painstaking years, until they finally moved in to the more than 14,000-square-foot space in 1996.

In the early 70s, Cathy Rush becomes the head basketball coach at a tiny, all-girls Catholic college. Though her team has no gym and no uniforms — and the school itself is in danger of being sold — Coach Rush looks to steer her girls to their first national championship.

My “outlaw’s” husband thought I’d enjoy this movie. Boy, was he right. Made me feel close to Frau Reinke, who played semi pro women’s ball. We followed RU women’s bball with Teresa Grentz starting in the College Avenue gym. She knew the Mac story before it was kool. Her HS coach was also a groundbreaker in women’s liberation.

It’s corny, predictable, and full of stereo types.    

Reflecting upon the movie, it has so many messages. Both positive and negative.

It’s “Rudy” for women.

It’s not for the faint of heart. The message is “How much do you want what you say you want.”

For me, my takeaway was “Jesus loves to dance”.

I’m sure my fellow alums will take away more, but then I’m just a simple fat old white guy injineer.

Of course, this is the Gooferment’s fault, but probably NOT for the reasons you think.

They have permitted the “moral hazard” to exist. And, because imho, it suits the politicians’ and bureaucrats’ purposes, Big Banking has been permitted and encouraged to exist.

Politicians like easy “campaign contributons” and Big Banks are their own little slush fund. Look how many Big Banks and their executives give to BOTH parties. Can you say “advance auction of future favors”? Bureaucrats “love” Big Banks because it gives them a job “regulating” them and then future employment after “gooferment service” to feather their nests. Look at Bush43′s and BHO44′s Treasury Departments, any wonder why Goldman Sach’s was a big winner in all the bailouts?

That’s corruption. And not a “free market” by any stretch of the imagination.

And, the political class likes it just fine. Screw “Main Street”; it’s “Wall Street” that donates.

It’s not “Business” that is sacrosanct; it IS “GREED” that is.

Capitalism, raw naked greed, has done more for “human progress” that any other meme. And, I’d include “Christianity” or “Catholicism” in those memes considered for corination as MIM (most important meme). It induces irrascible, uncooperative, and generally unruly human beings to cooperate without force or “slavemasters / overseers”. Greed, singlehandedly, drives mankind to work itself / themselves harder than any King or Cross. Midnight oil is expended liberally in the drive to be the next Zukenberg.

Look at the Third World, it’s only their acceptance of corruption and the value that they place on women and children that allows us to stay ahead of them. Human energy is driven when given a goal.

Anyone who doubts human ingenuity need only look at America’s prisons where drugs, cell phones and other “contraband” are freely available and cigarettes are “money”. Then tell me about Greed and the American drive to succeed?

It was only when the country turned Socialist by giving women the right to vote that “we” (the collective) began to lose our way.

(I’m popular at family functions when I link the “women’s right to vote” to “Prohibition” to “Organized Crime” to the “(pseudo) War on (some) Drugs” to the rise of the “Fascist State in Amerika”! Proabably as popular with the womenfolk as I am with you!)

Prohibition, The Federal Reserve, the Income Tax, Gooferment Skrules, and all the subsequent implementations of Socialist meme in the new Amerika have DESTROYED the American Experiment in “republican (little R) self-government”.

So I’d urge that we reject the current scheme of “Socialist Capitalism” and get back “to raw naked Greed”!

Let folks in biz FAIL! Miserable, big time, not bailouts. Let the Zuckenbergs of the future swing for the “fences” at their OWN peril.

When some of them fail, let us CELEBRATE and APPLAUD as they spin, crash, and burn in a “death spiral” to bankruptcy and poverty.

But, when they win, let the keep it ALL.

No meme advances the collective good better, faster, and cheaper that Capitalism.

No Gooferment welfare; private charity. No bailouts; bankruptcy. No social engineering; let people grow however they see fit. No Gooferment “safety net” that traps people into perpetually poverty and moral bankruptcy.

Sigh.

It seems so simple to me? Guess I just really don’t understand. 

But I want “flush toilets” and don’t mind playing plumbers outrageous rates at 3AM to make it work. Never saw a poor plumber. And some of them are really smart nice guys.

* I invented a new training technique called “windsprintinglearningtime.” It’s when a player runs 110-yard gassers while carrying a bookish nerd on their shoulders that shouts the periodic table at the team member. As you can see, I am dedicated to scholarly athleticism, which means that we’ll be smarter than those turdburgers up at Harvard and Yale.

* I’m pretty much responsible for growing the game in Montana. You may not have heard the story, so I’ll quickly recapitulate it here: I borrowed (the police still maintain that I “kidnapped”) a dozen youth lacrosse players from Great Neck, New York, and went all Johnny Appleseed through the northern Great Plains, burying these studs in the ground and letting nature take its course. In just 15 years, these players grew and multiplied, all thanks to my resourceful thinking. (You don’t have to thank me for this. It was the responsible thing to do.)

I'd like to see that type of letter sent to a few pompous hiring managers I've interviewed with. Couple of them even offered, but I knew there was NO chemistry there. By way of tracking, several of these would have been disastrous. Not that some of my own "choices" where I was "positive" I'd be CxO in no time, turned into <synonym for excrement> very quickly. Hey, it's life. Funny stuff none the less. Thomas Joseph Kealy

Thomas Joseph Kealy, age 84, of Wilmington passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 17, 2012. He died from lung cancer with his loving family by his side. Born in Manhattan, NY, Tom was the son of the late Josephine Frawley and Thomas Stephen Kealy.

He graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Manhattan College, a Masters of Science from Duquesne University, and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. He was employed by DuPont as a chemist for 30 years.

Tom served his country as a Corporal in Korea from 1946 to 1947. He served for four years as one of the first County Councilmen for New Castle County from 1967-1971.

One of Tom’s goals was to have a little bit of fun every day. He enjoyed directing Duplicate Bridge held at the Sellers Senior Center and the Elk’s Lodge. He was an avid NYT crossword puzzler and always had a fresh joke to share. As a true lover of animals, Tom cared for the pets of family and friends. Most importantly, he treasured time spent with his family.

Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pat; his children, Ann Mitchell (Henry) of Chesapeake City, MD, Tom Kealy (Kathy) of Landenberg, PA, Mary Jo Kealy (Mark Rockel) of Wilmington, DE, Terry Agee (Dave) of Bucks County, PA, Liz Kealy of Boston, MA, Kiki Comerford (Patrick) of West Chester, PA, Jean Isaacs (Mitch) of Wyckoff, NJ, and Maggi Chodack (Jeff) of New Milford, CT; his sister, Maureen Higgins (Jack); 15 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane Kealy Ordemann; his parents; his brother, James and sister, Joan Clarke.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Brandywine Valley Funeral Care, 412 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, May 21, 2012 at St. Helena’s R.C. Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809 commencing at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Silverbrook Cemetery.

GERARD M. SWEENEY Ph.D.

READFIELD — Gerard M. “Gerry” Sweeney, 69, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, after a courageous struggle with lung cancer at his home in Readfield. He was surrounded by his family, wife Coleen Sweeney (Barker) and daughters Megan (child from a previous marriage to Gail White), Fallon and Thalia.

Born to Alice Sweeney (Cassidy) and James P. Sweeney in New York City on Sept. 17, 1942, he was preceded in death by his brother James.

Gerry coupled his academic passion for gothic literature with a love of life, especially for the nature of Maine — his home since 2004. Gerry practiced Tai Chi for decades until his last days of life and shared an interest in books and movies with his family. He earned a bachelor of science degree in English in 1964 from Manhattan College, an MA in English in 1966 from New York University, and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1972. During his 33 years as an English professor at the University of Akron (1971-2004), Gerry’s passion for the written word and teaching served as an inspiration to countless students. His dedication as a husband and father will be an inspiration to his wife and daughters always.

The family wishes to thank the health professionals at Maine General HealthReach Hospice for the support they gave Gerry and the family.

A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., in Winthrop. A reception at the home will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to one of Gerry’s favorite charities: Good Shepherd Food Bank of Auburn (P.O. Box 1807, Auburn, ME 04211).

Fred earned a B.S.E.E from Manhattan College in 1957 and an M.S.E.E. from New York University in 1959. In addition, he did graduate studies in Operations Research at Columbia University.

Fred recently retired after 15 years of service as a Director of AMGEN (Thousand Oaks, CA) [NASDAQ] and was the presiding director of HCA (Nashville, TN) [NYSE] prior to its LBO in 2007. He was Vice-Chairman of New York Hospital prior to its merger with Columbia Presbyterian and now enjoys Emeritus status after 36 years of service.

Anyway. Tim Ward, Dean of Engineering has been very happy with the work I did with the joint MBA and grad Engineering students this year. He would like for me to offer a joint MBA/grad Engineering consulting class that is global since I am the new Director of Global Business Studies. I have written a syllabus and am planning to take the class to the country in January that I visit with the undergraduate International Field Studies Seminar in January. This January 2013, we are going to France. I can set up the 3 1/2 day seminars for the undergrads from the contacts that Prof. Manduley has had, but I need help in finding a company that would let the grad students learn about products/services and then innovate/tweak some part of that and write a feasibility study and then back on campus for a week to write the business plan.

Do you know of any person I can call or a company for me to contact? Thank you for any help you can give..
I can see any company from hotels to cosmetics to pharmaceuticals to automotive could all be possible – banking too.

Please ask in Jasper Jottings. {Privacy Invoked} I can ask him. Good idea. Credit Suisse will be used for the undergrad finance seminar so have to think about adding to our corral rather than deep mining..

Yes – {Privacy Invoked} may know some in Paris. {Privacy Invoked} was stationed in London for at least 2 years.
