[JR: I've been corrected. Her maiden name was Sofo. The SILIVE story has it right. The original email had a typo and I picked it up and ran with it. I'm truly sorry. I'll try to be more careful in the future. Thanks, Anthony for the comment.]

Pierro, Annmarie Sofo [MC1996 RIP]

[JR: The story still makes me sad. Brings back the passing of my own wife, who was much older. I know how the death of her Mom at a relatively young age affected her. I pray for the family that they can survive this sadness. It's a tight road. But, we're left with few choices. Other than to make the best of a bad situation, what else can one do.]

[JR: Way kool! If we'd had more notice we could have had virtual graduation parties. Can you imagine a bunch of old alums listening to speeches? Probably could win on AFV! Wonder if it's going to be available on replay. I have insomnia. Might be just what the doctor ordered. All joking aside, I like commencement speeches. Sometimes they are insightful and sometimes deadly dull. I can't remember any of the ones I attended. But then I can't remember high school either. I know I went; just didn't retain anything. LOL! I remember I was beaten often. Does that count?]

JOBIT: Lesce, Lou [MC1960 RIP]

Mike McEneney @ 10:05 PM to Jasperfjohn68 RE: Lou Lescs,’60 RIP

Good Afternoon,

It is with sadness that I ask for your prayers for a friend, colleague and fellow Jasper who died last night. Some of you know Lou so I want to share the information.

Lou Lesce ‘ 60 BA died last evening. Lou was probably the last person who was pulled out alive from the rubble of the terrorist attacks of the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. His work was not done. God had work yet for him to do and Lou fulfilled those expectations grandly as a Trainer and Facilitator at Lee Hecht Harrison. Lou always did the Right Thing. That was the choice he knew. His sense of humor, his truthfulness and integrity, his kindness and good will made him special. The hundreds of candidates he trained and coached at LHH and influenced positively are part of his legacy. Lou was also a great cook. Most times when he delivered a Seminar at LHH, he brought in trays of wonderful things he cooked and he always made sure the back office staff at LHH got their share. Not seen but not forgotten. Lou was considerate and thoughtful. Those of us who knew Lou loved, respected and admired him. Lou was a laSallian product who went about his work and life well dressed, well prepared and with Faith in God and the Human Spirit. He will be missed.

Dear John,

Here is more on Lou.

Colleagues:

Lou’s daughter-in-law Yvonne Ramirez just called with sad news.

Our dear friend Lou Lesce passed away last night.

We know him as the facilitator of Quick Start who kept his attendees laughing, trained, and taken care of.

We know him as the man who brought from his home in Queens platters of gourmet food that he made and paid special attention that the admin staff were fed.

We know him as the dapper dresser who wore an elegantly folded pocket square.

We know him as probably the last man out of the World Trade Center on September 11 when he descended 68 floors as he was about to present a seminar for LHH.

We know him as a great story teller and a friend.

We will miss him.

There will be a viewing tonight at the Romanelli-Stevens Funeral Home in Ozone Park: 8901 Rockaway Boulevard, Ozone Park, Queens 718-845-5151

JNEWS: Collins, Michael [MC1985] Tuckahoe’s School Board Unopposed

http://www.thedailyeastchester.com/schools/tuckahoes-collins-unopposed-boe-election

Tuckahoe’s Collins Runs Unopposed for School Board
by Mark Chapman

*** begin quote ***

Collins, 48, was sworn into office in mid-October to fill the unexpired term of Bronxville resident James Oliverio, who resigned in September after serving more than eight years on the board. He said he wanted to serve as a trustee “to find new ways to elevate the overall performance of the district’s students despite limited financial resources, and to help the district negotiate a new contract with the teachers that is fair but will not require additional program cuts in the future as a result of the tax cap.”

The tax levy cap that has loomed over the 2012-13 budget process may be helpful to taxpayers, but it may not be the best solution, Collins said.

“While the tax cap clearly will help control the unsustainable pattern of excessive tax increases, it is, nevertheless, a bit of political theater and a gimmick,” he said. “The fundamental problem facing school districts was not on the revenue side but on the cost side. A cost cap would be far more meaningful to school districts than a tax cap. But that would require some major changes, such as repealing the Triborough Amendment, and Albany lacks the political courage to make such bold moves.”

Born in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx, Collins has been a Tuckahoe resident since 1995. He is an attorney with the Manhattan law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King PLLC. He has practiced law in New York City for more than 20 years, the past 15 years as a labor and employment lawyer representing management.

He served as a coach for the Eastchester Youth Soccer Association from 2005 to 2008 and is a former Big Brother with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Westchester.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Manhattan College and earned his Juris Doctor with honors from Rutgers Law School in 1991. He was editor of the Rutgers Law Review from 1990-91.

Collins has been married for 17 years and has two sons, Michael in ninth grade and Nicholas in fifth grade, both of whom attend Tuckahoe schools.

Eastchester BOE Candidates Running Unopposed
by Mark Chapman

*** begin quote ***

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – When Eastchester residents head for the polls Tuesday to vote on the 2012-13 school budget, they will also have the chance to give three members of the Board of Education a vote of confidence.

Board members Dave Carforo, John J. Curcio and Michelle S. Kissel are all unopposed for re-election to the nine-member panel. Here is a look at the candidates:

David Carforo, the current board secretary, is a real estate professional who has specialized in the development of rental housing since 1986. He is originally from the Bronx and has lived in Eastchester since 1994. His familiarity with the town goes back a lot further, though – his father, Nick Carforo (Eastchester High School class of 1946), was raised in town and operated a landscaping business here.

A trustee on the Board of Education since 2009, David Carforo serves on the board’s Finance/Audit Advisory Committee and the Community Relations Committee.

Carforo graduated from Manhattan College and has earned advanced degrees from Bowling Green State University and New York University. He has two daughters: One graduated from Eastchester High School and is attending college, and the other is a junior who will graduate in June 2013.

John J. Curcio has 20 years of experience working in public schools in New York, beginning as a special education schoolteacher in New York City. He also served as the city’s Chancellor’s Review specialist. He has seven years of combined experience as a coordinator and as supervisor and director of human relations for BOCES in Nassau and Southern Westchester; and additional human resources experience with the Greenwich public schools, the Lakeland Central schools and the Roosevelt Union Free School District. He is an assistant principal with the New York City Department of Education. He is on the Eastchester Board of Education’s Negotiations Committee, Finance Committee and Education Committee.

Curcio holds a doctorate in psychology and a master’s degree in statistics, from Columbia University, as well as a master’s in industrial psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from St. John’s University in 1990.

Curcio said his education and career experience help him deal with complex issues.

“I’ve always had the courage to make difficult decisions on behalf of our students; defend the philosophy and goals of the Eastchester Board of Education; and work tirelessly, collaboratively and, most importantly, transparently, with all community members,” he said.

He and his wife of nearly 20 years, Jamie, have lived in Eastchester for the past 11 years. Their 15-year-old daughter, Maddison, is an eighth-grader attending Eastchester Middle School. Their 12-year-old son, Jared, is a sixth-grader at Eastchester Middle School, and 7-year-old son Zachary is at Waverly.
