LYONS, Daniel G.

Daniel G. Lyons passed away Sunday (February 12, 2012).

He was born in New York City on February 20, 1913, the son of Thomas and Delia (Murphy) Lyons. He attended De LaSalle Institute and graduated from Manhattan College School of Engineering, cum laude, in June 1935, both schools in New York City.

He came to Stamford, CT in 1938, and was Supervisor of Real Estate and Mortgage Loan Appraisers for Equitable Life Assurance Society. He left Equitable Life in 1942 to become a Field Engineer and later Construction Superintendent for Leonard Construction of Chicago, IL. In 1944, Dan married Kathleen Ann Ashworth. They traveled the country and Dan worked on projects with DuPont Chambers Works Pennsville, NJ, General Foods Gains Plant, Kankakee, IL, and Stauffer Chemical Co., Richmond, CA. They returned to Connecticut in 1948 and took up residence in Guilford where Dan was employed by George B. Horan Co. as an appraiser. In 1950 he became Chief Appraiser in the Loan Guaranty Division, Veterans Administration, Hartford, CT, and moved to Wethersfield that same year. He was appointed Executive Director of the Hartford Housing Authority in 1953 and reached compulsory retirement age in 1978. Dan became Executive Director of the Wethersfield Housing Authority in 1979 and left in 1985. He served as a consultant to the Glastonbury Housing Authority in 1987 to help develop their first congregate housing facility and remained in that capacity until it was completed and occupied in 1991.

Dan was a member of the Tau Beta Pi-Engineering Honor Society; was a Licensed Professional Engineer; former Senior Member, Society of Residential Appraisers; past president New England Council of NAHRO (National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials); former member National Board of Governors, NAHRO; and was a member of the Board of Directors, Connecticut Chapter NAHRO. He served for twenty years as a member of the National Alumni Council of Manhattan College. He was Treasurer of the Capital Community Technical College Foundation Board.

Dan was predeceased by his wife Kathleen Ashworth Lyons and his brother, Thomas Joseph Lyons II. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Judith Lyons of Hartford; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen Lyons and Robert Plenkovich of Seattle, WA; a daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and David Ouellette, of Virginia Beach VA; his four granddaughters, Katelyn Moon and her husband Jared, Megan, Amy, and Kristin Ouellette; and great granddaughter, Olivia Moon, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday, February 17, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 18, at 10 a.m. in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Hwy, Wethersfield, CT. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benectict Cemetery, Bloomfield, CT. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to, Manhattan College, Development Office, 4513 Manhattan College Pkwy., Riverdale, NY, 10471., or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Malcolm Ward

Malcolm Ward, passed away at the Santa Fe Care Center, Sunday, October 24, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Robert Ward and Alexine Fourcade, on October 6, 1910, he was 100 years old. Malcolm received degrees in science from St. Mary’s University in Texas, Manhattan College in New York, and New Mexico Highlands University. He taught for 55 years with the Christian Brothers at St. Paul in Covington, Louisiana, College of Santa Fe, St. Michael’s High School, and Cathedral High School In El Paso, Texas. He was also a member of the College of Santa Fe Alumni and Friends of the Library.

He is survived by his wife Mary, brothers; John Ward of Danville, Virginia and Brother Thomas Ward FSC of New Orleans, Louisiana; sister-in-law: Joanne (John) Rink of Rio Rancho; and many nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 6:00 p.m., at Berardinelli Family Chapel, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., at Cristo Rey Church, followed by Interment at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens. Westchester Sports & Recreation NewsRiverdale, NY – Men’s basketball star Jason Hoover ’97 and baseball standout Thomas Walraven ’76 headline the list of 2008 inductees into Manhattan College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 30th annual induction ceremony, sponsored by the Manhattan College Alumni Society, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5:00 p.m. in the College’s Smith Auditorium.

Among the other inductees are softball’s Carrie Wujcik-Drum ’96 and track and field team members Diné Potter ’97, Patrick McGrath ’95, Louis Ostolozaga ’81, Peter Beyer ’60 and Dean Noll ’50 (posthumously). Two teams will also be honored: the 1935 Penn Relays mile championship team and the 1993 women’s softball squad.

William was born on March 15, 1913 and passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

William was last known to be living in Union Township, New Jersey.

He graduated with a BS degree from Manhattan College in 1935.

Visiting Hours will be on Friday, September 12th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home, 1761 Route 31, Clinton, NJ. There will be a Funeral Mass on Saturday, September 13th at 9:00 am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 2 White Bridge Road, Pittstown, NJ 08867 #908-735-4024. The Interment will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Middle Village, NY (Queens) following the Mass.
