Dear John,

I am not sure what Class Joe Zeitler graduated with, but the four Track Legends that were mentioned in the article are all members of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame. They are: Edgar “Howie” Borck,’38, Robert Conkling,’39, George Sheehan,’40 and Andy Neidnig,’41. So we can assume that Joe was probably in one of these later Classes.

James J. Aiello

ALBANY James J. Aiello, 94, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the Hospice at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany.

He was the son of the late John and Ellen Flanagan Aiello. Mr. Aiello, an Albany native, was a practicing attorney since 1942. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy, attended Manhattan College and New York University in New York City and graduated Albany Law School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant (1942-46). He was affiliated with his father in the wholesale produce and grocery business, and operated several public warehouses. He was also an active real estate broker. In 1967, he represented the City of Albany as its general counsel to the Albany Urban Renewal Agency, Albany Community Development Agency, Albany Department of Economic Development and the Albany Local Development Corporation as well as serving as city of Albany assistant corporation counsel. Retiring his city affiliation in June 1994, he continued his private law practice until December 1997 and served on the appeals board of the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. He retired in 2007.

Mr. Aiello was a member of: the Federal Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Albany County Bar Association, NYS Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Albany County Board of Realtors, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Albany Rotary Club, Menands Rotary Club (past president), Wolfert’s Roost Country Club and the Sons of Italy.

The widower of Barbara Childs Aiello, he is survived by his sister, Ellen A. Leonard of Albany; five children, Rev. Barbara Aiello of Concord, Mass., John Aiello (and Sylvia), Mazie Girvan (and David), Susanne Parker (and Jim) of Albany, and J. Christopher Aiello (and Lisa) of Manchester, Vt.; nine grandchildren, Kirsten and Chris Aiello (Tracy), Alexis and Julia Girvan, Ryan, Jacquelyn, Christopher and Morgan Parker and Robert Christopher Aiello.; and three great-granddaughters, Charleston, Logan and Addison Aiello and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Albany. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may also call at the Tebbutt Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany, Friday evening 4 to 7. Interment will be private. JAMES E. DOUGHERTY (Age 93) A resident of McLean. VA., Mr. Dougherty, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011.

He was the loving husband of Edna P. Dougherty; beloved father of James E. Dougherty, MD and his wife Maureen A. Dougherty. He is also survived by his grandsons Matthew R. and his wife Carrie M. Dougherty, MD and Kevin R. Dougherty, MD and his wife Heather Tory Dougherty, MD; great-grandson Ryan Christopher Dougherty; his sister Virginia Hale and brother Vincent Dougherty. He was predeceased by his sister Marie Dooley.

Mr. Dougherty is a Manhattan College School of Civil Engineering graduate of 1940. He also completed graduate studies in aeronautical engineering at MIT. He retired in 1993, as Technical Airworthiness Director from General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Previously he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1979 as Assistant Chief, Aircraft Engineering Division, after a 35 year career. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a recipient of the Flight Safety Foundation “Laura Taber Safety Award.”

Mr. Dougherty served as an elected member of the Falls Church City Council, member and Chairman of the Falls Church Planning Commission, and of the Zoning Commission. He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a long-term member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a 4th degree Knight.

Visitation services will be held, in the chapel, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22101 on Tuesday September 20 at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the main sanctuary at 11 a.m.; a reception will follow immediately after Mass in the Bishop Flaherty Hall. Interment Columbia Gardens (Family only). Memorial contributions may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, www.macular.org. Dr. George Sheehan was a powerful advocate for running from its boom in the late 1970′s until his death in 1993. He was a regular contributor to Runner’s World magazine and wrote a weekly column in the Red Bank Register, our local paper in the 80′s. He became famous for breaking through age barriers, including running the first sub-5 minute mile by a person over 50. He published several books and wrote essays that he classified as either “right brain” (those about philosophy and his experiences), or “left brain” (practical advice). At age 60, he ran the Marine Corps Marathon with a time of 3:01.

Manhattan College Mourns Loss of Generous Benefactor

John J. Horan ’40, distinguished alumnus and former chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., Inc., passed away on Jan. 22 from natural causes. Horan, a generous donor to Manhattan, received several honors from the College, including an honorary Doctor of Science in 1978 at the 127th Commencement ceremony and the De La Salle Medal in 1985. Horan Hall, a student residence, was named in his honor, as well as the John. J. Horan Endowed Lecture Series, which encourages faculty development through enhanced involvement in research.

John J. Horan, Former Merck Chairman and CEO Dies of Natural Causes at 90 Years of Age

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–John J. Horan, of Sea Girt, N.J. died on Saturday, January 22, of natural causes. He was 90 years old. Mr. Horan served as chairman of the Board of Directors and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., Inc., from 1976 to 1985. By the end of his tenure, Merck had grown into the largest pharmaceutical company in the world and would soon become the most admired company in America on Fortune magazine’s well- known list.

Horan was instrumental in supporting Merck research that led to the development of ivermectin, a medicine to help prevent and treat the devastating tropical disease known as river blindness, and a long running partnership with the Carter Center that serves as the pioneering model for governmental and business cooperation in humanitarian efforts in developing nations.

Upon his retirement as Merck’s CEO, Horan continued to serve as a member of the Board of Directors and as its vice chairman until 1993. He earlier served as the company’s president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Horan received an A.B. degree from Manhattan College in 1940 and a J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School in 1946. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the 127th Commencement of Manhattan College in 1978. Horan was an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, serving with the U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces during World War II. He saw heavy action in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy, France. His was among the lead ships as part of the allied invasion onto the Salerno, Italy beachhead. Later, as communications officer on the staff of Admiral John Wilkes, Horan helped deliver the orders that led to the launch of the Normandy invasion, the largest amphibious operation in history. After the war, he was associated with the law firm of Nims, Verdi and Martin in New York.

In 1952, Horan joined the Legal Department of Merck & Co., Inc. and rose steadily serving successively as general counsel, director of Public Relations, director of Research Administration, director of Corporate Planning and president of Merck Sharp and Dohme.

Following his retirement from management at Merck, Horan played an active role in the development of the biotechnology industry, serving as chairman of the Board of Myriad Genetics Inc., chairman of Atrix Laboratories and director of Celgene Corporation.

Horan’s corporate directorships included: General Motors Corporation, J.P. Morgan & Co. Inc., and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, NCR Corporation and the Burlington Industries, Inc. While at Merck, he also served as chairman of the Board for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association and a member of the Business Roundtable.

His civic work included serving as a trustee for The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and as a board member of the United Negro College Fund. Horan did volunteer work on President Reagan’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control, where he was chairman of the Task Force on the Army, and the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Efficiency in the Operation of the Courts, where he was chairman of the Committee on Surrogates. His awards for public service include: The George Champion Award from Dr. Leon Sullivan’s Opportunities Industrialization Center of America, the De La Salle Medal from Manhattan College, and the Distinguished Service Award from the United Negro College Fund.

Horan is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Julia Fitzgerald, and his four children: daughter Mary Alice Ryan and husband John Ryan of Spring Lake, N.J.; son Thomas and wife Katharine Jacobs of Hoboken, N.J.; son John Horan Jr. and wife Patricia, of Sea Girt, N.J.; son David and wife Michele, of Armonk, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister Mary Smith of Lakewood, N.J.; brother Eugene Horan of Monroe, N.J. and sister Florence and husband Tom Keating of Wall, N.J.

A viewing will be held at O’Brien’s Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, NJ 07719 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Thursday, January 27. A Mass will be offered at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, N.J., 08750, on Friday, January 28 at 9:30 AM. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Johns Hopkins University, c/o Fund for John Hopkins Medicine, 100 North Charles Street, Suite 436, Baltimore, Md. 21201, with a note indicating that the donation is in memory of John J. Sr. Mary Jean Morrow, of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, New Windsor, entered into rest on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Mount St. Joseph Convent, New Windsor. She was 97.

Daughter of the late Patrick J. and Hannah Casey Morrow, she was born on February 14, 1913 in New York City.

She entered religious life on September 8, 1929 at Mount St. Joseph in New Windsor; professed her first vows on April 22, 1932 and final vows on April 25, 1935. Sister received a Bachelors Degree in Latin from Manhattan College in 1940 and her Masters in Education from Fordham University in 1946.

Sr. Mary Jean’s teaching ministry included, Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1932; St. Michael’s Elementary School, Manhattan, 1932-1933; St. Michael’s High School, 1933-1970; John S. Burke High School, Goshen, 1970-1971; St. Jude’s School, Manhattan, 1971-1977. In 1977 she retired to Mt. St. Joseph where she served her congregation as Medical Secretary in the Finance Office until 1999.

Survivors include her nephew, Dr. Gerald Morrow and his wife, Zyla of Bethlehem, PA; niece, Elizabeth Selfridge and her husband, Barrett of Floral Park, NY; and many other nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 7 p.m. on Friday, October 1 at the Mount St. Joseph Chapel, 64 Presentation Way, New Windsor. A prayer service will take place at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 2 in the Mount St. Joseph Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery.

William J. Burke
1917-2010

SPRINGFIELD – Leaving a legacy of love, William J. “Bill” Burke, 92, of Spring-field, departed this life for his eternal reward on Monday, July 26, 2010 from Wingate at Springfield.

He was born in Chicago IL, son of the late William and Alice (McDonald) Burke and graduated from Manhattan College in New York City. Bill served his country as a United States Army Veteran of World War II, and had lived in Troy New York before coming to Springfield more than 55 years ago. He was employed as a Newspaper Editor for the Springfield Newspapers in Springfield MA from 1955 until his retirement in 1981.

Bill was a member of the Kiwanis Club, a founding member of the Valley Press Club, a bridge player at the Springfield Senior Center, and an avid fan of the New York Yankees. He was a kind, generous man with a wonderful sense of humor and love of life. He was a proud father, avid reader, devoted husband, and a friend to everyone, especially those less fortunate. Bill always left those he came in contact with feeling special; it was always about you, not him.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lucille (Higgins) Burke on April 22, 1995. Bill is survived by a daughter, Patricia Kearns and her husband James of Springfield, two sons: Michael E. Burke and his wife Deborah Ann of Coral Springs FL, and William F. Burke and his wife Monique LaRiviere of South Hadley, 5 grandchildren: Kerry E. Antilla and her husband Mark of Davie FL, Kathryn Ann Burke of Coral Springs FL, Thomas Burke of Seattle WA, William Burke of CA, and Raymond Burke of NC.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:30 from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass in Sacred Heart Church on Chestnut Street in Springfield at 10:00. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Eugene Joseph Gormley   

EUGENE JOSEPH GORMLEY, DDS, died at age 93 on June 14, 2010.

He was a resident of Greenwich for 16 years and previously lived in New Rochelle and Larchmont, N.Y. Born on June 9, 1917 in New York City, he was the son of Bridget and James Gormley. He graduated from All Hallows High School, Manhattan College, and Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery before serving as a U.S. Navy dentist in World War II at the Sampson Naval Training Base and on the U.S. General Brooke Naval Transport Ship.

After retiring as a Lieutenant Commander, he practiced dentistry for 50 years in New Rochelle.

Married to his loving wife, Mary Niewenhous for 61 years, he is survived by his children, Mary L. Warren, Fr. Eugene Gormley, LC, Anne (Steven) Daly, Fr. Stephen Gormley, LC, Greg (Lynda) Gormley, Kate (Gary) Gutekunst, Philip (Nuria) Gormley, Lorraine Lunapiena (Michael, deceased) and son-in-law, William Collier; as well as 16 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by daughter, Claire Collier, and siblings, Daniel, James, Vincent, Marie, Kathleen, Ann, and Dorothy.

Dr. Gormley was a member of the American Dental Society, Knights of Columbus, the Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich, was a volunteer at Greenwich Hospital and member of Westchester Country Club.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (Today) in the Leo Gallagher & Sons Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford and a Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Church, Greenwich. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ALS/CT, In Memory of Claire Gormley Collier, 4 Oxford Rd., Unit D4, Milford, CT 06460 or to the ALS Therapy Dev.
