Vincent Forras to Address Windsor Locks RTC April 21, 2010
Windsor Locks RTC
Windsor Locks Town Hall, 50 Church St, Windsor Locks. We meet in the Large Conf. Room at 7:00 pm.

*** begin quote ***

Vincent Forras of Ridgefield, Connecticut, is a Patriotic American who holds time-honored values and life affirming principles. He is a lifelong Republican who is seeking the support of the people to win former Senator Christopher Dodd’s seat in the upcoming 2010 election. Mr. Forras is a man of the people — a volunteer firefighter, who answered the call on September 11th, 2001 to serve when America was attacked and who stands ready to answer this call if given the privilege and opportunity by the people.

Running on a platform that addresses major critical issues like wasteful government spending, skyrocketing budget numbers, higher taxes, growing unemployment and the economy; homeland security, universal healthcare, encouraging cleaner and renewable energy, the preservation of human life, immigration and human trafficking, among others. Vincent has seen the best of what America can be and believes that by expanding upon the foundation of the late President Ronald Reagan real common sense solutions will emerge.

His overarching vision is for Connecticut to restore our state and our nation to the values, freedoms and the opportunity to create the economic security sought after by others; and to restore the faith and confidence you once had in your public servants. This will require a bold commitment and determined action from us all because we did not get here over night. But together we can make this happen if we are committed, vigilant, patient and persistent. Now is the time to kick it up a notch and let your voice be heard.

In Vincent’s own words, “I believe the solution to what’s happening in our country right now is in each of us. Our founding fathers knew that the American people, inspired by their belief in God, were the ones who could make it happen. My message is simple: We don’t have to reinvent anything. Everything we need to make America great again is right here.”

He was born in 1957, a first generation American, in Queens, NY, to Mary and Vincent Forras. Along with his brothers, David and Gary, his was a family of hardworking parents, a strong sense of family values, and unwavering loyalty and dedication to the people around him and his country.

While growing up, Vincent spent his summers working at his father’s company, Chase Scientific Research. Chase Scientific Research was a manufacturing company that produced precision castings used in rotating components within ac synchronous fractional hp motors which are used within guidance systems of most missile systems and aircraft including rockets – he learned literally the industry from the ground up.

Upon graduation from Manhattan College with a teaching degree in 1979; he accepted his father’s request to take over the company upon his retirement. Through the work ethic instilled by his father Vincent expanded that operation into a business that included distribution of components necessary in various military and aerospace systems design. Customers included Bendix Aviation, Honeywell, General Dynamics, Montevideo Technology, Jet, Singer Kearfott Division and many others.

From the time Vincent took over Chase Scientific Research he transformed through growth and diversification from a half million dollar business into three diverse businesses with combined annual sales of $10 million by the time he answered the call on September 11th, 2001.

In 1985 Vincent took that expertise on his own and formed The Phoenix Group which was a distributor of military spec components mainly for use by NATO contractors and US Defense contractors. His entrepreneurial vision coupled with the experience in his father’s company serviced customers like Northrop, Honeywell, Raytheon, Rolls Royce, Westland Helicopters, Normalaire Garret, Smiths Aviation, Lucas Aerospace, British Aerospace, Muirhead Vactric and most Chase customers.

Through the success of The Phoenix Group, they expanded their market and maintained offices and sales force in London and New York State, Munich Germany, and Budapest Hungary.

Additionally Vincent opened business dealing with China at the request of British Aerospace on Airbus Wing fuel sensors. The Phoenix Group was responsible for complete kitting programs for Flight Refueling partnership with McDonnell Douglas on KC135 refueling pods.

The success of the “kitting” program became the template for many other programs that came afterwards with contracts with companies such as: Hughes Aircraft NASA (Space Platform, and space shuttle), Hubble systems, Maverick, IR Maverick, Harpoon, Slam and numerous other systems including full kit partnership for Oliver Hazard Perry Class US Navy Fin Stabilizer Systems.

In 1988 to comply with US Government request to partner with “Disadvantaged” business, Vincent also founded Aegis Electronic Systems. Soon afterwards they also purchased VEGA Systems, a UK Based precision PC board manufacturer capable of manufacturing the highest level space application assemblies.

Aegis was responsible for most major US defense systems with content and participation and serviced customers like Electric Boat, General Dynamics, Newport News Shipbuilding, Raytheon, Hughes, McDonnell Douglass, Sikorsky Helicopter, Otis, Bath Iron Works, and Norden Systems. In 1991 the Group developed a partnership with Hungarian Optical Works, MOM importing first Gyro Theodolite Systems used to calibrate our most sensitive guidance platforms.

His business involvement lasted through the 9/11 tragedy where he had a life altering experience when he was buried amid the rubble during a rescue operation. After that near-death situation, Vincent decided to dedicate his life to helping others.

He founded Gear Up Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping families of those who perished at Ground Zero through his charitable actions around the world and here at home. Donations included fire engines, equipment, training and a school that continues to operate in Ecuador for poor children seeking to learn how to help others through our combined noble actions. Additionally, Vinny and the foundation have worked hard to keep the memory alive about what happened that terrible day and how we need to continue to care for our brave first responders AFTER such an event.

Soon after 9/11, Vincent met Monica Carrera, who was in NYC on a special assignment at the Ecuadorian Consulate as a delegate of the Chamber of Commerce of Guayaquil. They partnered in life, worked together on the Gear Up Foundation and were married in October of 2003.

Vincent’s goal was to set an example for his three children, Michael, Brittany, and Danielle. His message was “you can’t just take, you must also give back.” That message continued after his marriage and his family grew by four more children. Today, Daughter Brittany has graduated college and Denisse, Danielle and Gaston are all in college. Daughter Alejandra is in high school. Oldest daughter Andrea remains in Ecuador, her home, as a fashion designer and she recently married Agustin Loor.

Inspired by Vincent’s sacrifice and commitment his son Michael dedicated himself to his country through his enrollment, directly after high school graduation, into the U.S. Marine Corps. He continues to proudly serve our country to this day.

Vincent continues to dedicate his life to the brotherhood and humanity that he experienced firsthand at Ground Zero. He counts on those closest to him to carry on that dedication worldwide. He plans to dedicate his future work in the U.S. Senate to bringing back simple ideals and values to the people of Connecticut and the United States; the values upon which this country was built.

ASU names new provost

By Kiah Collier

Posted April 12, 2010 at 10:16 a.m. , updated April 12, 2010 at 6:06 p.m.

*** begin quote ***

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State University will have a permanent provost and vice president for academic affairs come July.

Since 2007, Dr. Anthony Blose has worked as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Lake Superior State University in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. The 54-year-old former physics professor also served as a dean of two of the university’s science and mathematics colleges before being appointed to his current position.

ASU President Joseph C. Rallo announced the appointment of Blose to the post Monday. He will replace Dr. James Limbaugh, who has served for about a year on an interim basis after Donald Coers stepped down to be a full-time English professor.

Blose said in a phone interview Monday that he and his family received a warm reception during a visit to San Angelo last week and that he is excited to be a part of a growing university in a state with an economy more stable than Michigan’s.

“One of the things that’s very exciting is that it’s a growing campus,” Blose said, adding that Michigan universities have suffered along with the state’s economy and that dealing with shortfalls in funding has been an interesting challenge.

“Compared with having the resources and wherewithal to grow and explore new options, it’s quite different and in many ways a more pleasant challenge because you’re not always worried about survival and those kinds of things,” he said.

Blose is originally from Long Island, N.Y., and received his bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College. After receiving his doctorate and master’s degrees in physics from the University of North Carolina, Blose worked on the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories for six years before spending 16 years as a physics and astronomy professor at the University of North Alabama, where he also chaired the Department of Physics and Earth Science and served as director of the university’s planetarium.

He said teaching is his first love but his physics-based curiosity for how large entities work led him to choose a career in university administration.

The reason he was most attracted to the job at ASU is because of the focus placed on students, he said.

“Probably the biggest thing is that Angelo State is just the right size and it’s got the right mission, one that reminds me in some ways of the North Alabama mission: Very student oriented, very faculty-student focused,” he said. “They certainly have a great and capable faculty. They can do scholarly things as well, but often the students get involved and that’s in my mind one of the best ways to do university education…as opposed to very, very large universities where faculties are very research focused and undergraduates have to fend for themselves.”

As provost and vice president, Blose will serve as head of ASU’s academic programs, advocate for the faculty and work closely with the university’s president and vice presidents to make university decisions. The title of provost means he is permitted to make decisions for President Rallo when he is absent.

Blose said the goals and duties of the position will largely be the same as his current position in Michigan, but that he was attracted to the position at ASU especially because the vice president of academics affairs serves as an advocate for, and member of, the faculty.

“The organization I’m in now, it’s a union job. And there, you’re often looked at as an adversary when it comes to faculty. You are not recognized as a faculty member in the collective bargaining environment,” Blose said.

Because he will be an official member of the faculty, Blose said he expects things to be different and better in terms of administrative and faculty relations.

Rallo said this approach allows whoever serves in that role to be a “champion for their peers.”

Rallo said he was looking for someone with experience as a dean and provost and that Blose will be a “great fit for the campus and for the community.”

“He had both of those attributes as well as having a great record as a faculty member, so I think he’s going to make a great addition to the university,” Rallo said.

Blose will arrive in San Angelo at the beginning of July with his wife, Melissa, and their two children, Elizabeth, 15, and

Alex, who will turn 12 years old in May. He said his goal is to “hit the ground running.”

“That’s when we’ll really start to maybe crystallize some of the issues first that we will tackle,” he said.

His first day on the job is July 15.

FJohn – I knew many fellow students who had Zia for calculus and there was much lamenting among them. I heard Zia had it out for engineers. The reason I heard for Zia’s dislike of engineers was that they were only interested in making money or getting a job and not truly learning the subject of math. Glad I didn’t get him as a teacher. I had DiLillo for calculus and Stolze for dff eq, both excellent teachers.

Advice sought for post-COBRA health care coverage

*** begin quote ***

Group,

My COBRA health care coverage is almost up – next month will be the last (18th) month that I can purchase COBRA health insurance.

Can anyone in the group suggest reasoanble alternatives for my health care coverage going forward? For reasons unknown to me, policies such as those available from the IEEE and AARP (I’m 52) are not available to residents of NY (and usually NJ as well.)

The only plan I’ve located so far is a catastrophic plan + prescriptions from GHI for $450/month (single) but I think that may have a deductible of $25000. I’ll have to investigate further.

I would appreciate any and all advice and suggestions on available coverage options for myself in 2010.

Thanks,
Don Roderick

[JR: I remember that there was a independent consulting organization that offered "benefits" at their costs. I try and find it again.]

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Men’s basketball standout John Leonard’82 and Olympics star Aliann Pompey ’99 headline the list of 2009 inductees into Manhattan College’s Athletic Hall of Fame. The 31st annual induction ceremony, sponsored by the Manhattan College Alumni Society, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 p.m. Smith Auditorium.

Among the other inductees are Bill Goodfellow ’68, basketball (posthumously); Marty Ludwikowski ’80, track; Mike Quigley ’72, baseball; Gerry Ryan ’90, track & field; and Gerard Smith ’79, tennis.

{Extraneous Deleted}

With a rare combination of adaptability, determination and raw talent, Leonard was a leader on the basketball court, first as a player and later as a coach. The 6-foot-1-inch guard was recruited from Niskayuna (N.Y.) High School and offered a Jasper scholarship. While playing for the Jaspers, Leonard had to overcome the challenge of having three coaches in four years. Even with the constant change, he was able to put up some of the strongest stats in the College’s history. He still ranks third in career free throw percentage (83 percent) and holds the record of 32 consecutive shots from the line.

Ranking ninth in points (1,329), Leonard shot just under 90 percent for free throws in 1980-1981. He was a four-year letterman, two-time team Most Valuable Player and team captain in 1981-1982. He was named to the All Metropolitan Team in his junior and senior years and was a member of the Metro Atlantic All Conference Team (MAAC). He was a tenth-round NBA draft pick for the New York Knicks, one of only 20 Manhattan College players drafted by the NBA.

A native of Guyana, Pompey came to the United States when she was 14 and competed in high school track. She had no plans to continue running yet found herself being recruited. Already planning to attend Manhattan on an academic scholarship, she joined the Jaspers track team. The first Jasper female to win an NCAA title, Pompey set a school record for the 400-meter indoor with a time of 52.21 in 2000 and qualified for the NCAA six times.

Pompey holds seven Manhattan records. Her 500m indoor race with a time of 1:09.38 is also an ECAC and NCAA Collegiate record. She and her relay team took the 4x400m indoor relay in 3:41.01. Outdoors, Pompey is tops for the 200m (23.59), the 400m (52.51), the 4x200m relay (1:38.25) and the 4x400m relay (3:39.64). She holds eight Individual Metropolitan Titles in the 200m and 400m and still holds the MAAC 400m indoor and outdoor records, as well as the Metropolitan Conference 400m indoor and outdoor records. She was named All-East in the 200m and 400m six times and was selected as one of the top 25MAAC all-time performers in 2006.

With three Olympics under her belt (2000, 2004 and 2008), Pompey continues to compete internationally. She recently returned from the World Championships in Berlin, where she placed 11th in the 400m, and has been world ranked in the 400m each year. She has competed in seven World Championships, took a bronze medal for the 400m at the Pan Am Games in 2003, and set five records for Guyana for both the 200m and 400m, indoors and outdoors.

A 6-foot-1-inch guard from powerhouse Rice High School, Goodfellow was instrumental in bringing his team to the New York City Catholic High School Athletic Association semifinals. They lost to Power Memorial, which took the championship that year under the leadership of Lew Alcindor, now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with whom Goodfellow played on the New York City All Star team. He was offered scholarships to schools around the country and chose to attend Manhattan as a commuter, so that his widowed mother would not be alone.

In his three years on the varsity team, Goodfellow, affectionately nicknamed Goody, played 65 games and scored 1,025 points. He shot 45 percent from the field and scored a career-high 31 points against Bobby Knight’s Army team. He was known to pass more often than shoot and had a habit of stepping up his game when the Jaspers played at Madison Square Garden. He helped the College take the Met Conference in 1967 against St. Francis; brought the Jaspers to victory over Fordham in 1967; and earned his 1,000th point against the University of Connecticut. At the St. Francis Game, Goodfellow was voted MVP and received the Junius Kellogg Award, making 20 of his 28 points in the second half to clinch the Jasper NIT bid.

Ludwikowski was recruited by Fred Dwyer. A tough competitor from Cherry Hill High School West, Ludwikowski competed indoors, outdoors and in cross country. In 1977, near the beginning of his Jasper track career, he took second place at the IC4A Indoor 5,000 meters. An NCAA All American in Cross Country in 1979, Ludwikowski was also named Metropolitan Track’s Collegiate Cross Country Runner of the Year. A competitive year for the honor, he paved the way with a 10th-place finish at the National AAU Cross Country Championships, a third-place finish in the IC4A Championships and second place finishes in the NCAA District II Championships and the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championships. He was also a member of the All East First Team.

Ludwikowski wrapped up his track victories in 1980 with another second-place finish in the IC4A Outdoor 10,000 meters. Both of these IC4A second-place finishes came behind future Olympians. Ludwikowski was also instrumental in several Jasper relay victories, including the 4x1600m Rutgers Relay. He ran the leadoff leg in 4:10.8, breaking a Villanova record with a final team time of 16:43.3.

A star baseball player in high school at Mater Christi Diocesan in Queens, N.Y., Quigley received partial scholarships to play baseball at Fordham and St. John’s but decided to forgo scholarships to enter the novitiate to become a Christian Brother. He enrolled at Manhattan and joined the team. His plans to join the Christian Brothers changed, and junior and senior years, he pulled down partial scholarships as his record proved his prowess on the field. He was known for teamwork and fair play.

A right-handed second baseman, Quigley swung a wicked bat. He batted .405 in the Met Conference and .387 overall in 1971, and .388 in the Met Conference and .363 overall in 1972, averages garnering All Metropolitan Conference All Star selections. As a senior, he was team captain, voted the Manhattan College Baseball MVP and named to the Outstanding College Athletes of America Hall of Fame.

A Dublin native who started throwing at age 12, Ryan came to Manhattan College with high school championships under his belt and a record of competing for Ireland on the high school level. A three-time Irish National Champion, he still ranks sixth on the all-time Hammer List at Manhattan. Ryan earned NCAA All American status with a fourth-place finish in 1990.He hurled the hammer for a personal best of 211 feet, 8 inches. His throw would still qualify as an All American throw today, nearly two decades later.

Ryan qualified for the NCAAs twice and was a four-time Metropolitan Champion, twice for the hammer and twice for the weight. He also was named All East six times. Throughout his career, he continued to post personal bests, always striving to beat his last toss. In February 1989, Ryan competed in the Penn State Last Chance Invitational and won the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 57 feet and 1 3/4 inches. In 1990, he and five other Jasper field competitors contributed to Manhattan’s victory in the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Indoor Track and Field Championship. Ryan’s 35-pound weight sailed for 59 feet and 5 3/4 inches.

The No. 1 player from Garden City High School, Smith was named the Jasper’s Most Valuable Player in 1978 and 1979. Having lost only two matches his junior year, he improved on that record and went undefeated as a senior. The team also went undefeated in conference play that year and won the Suburban West Conference. Known for his serve and volley, Smith had one of his most competitive matches against Fordham’s undefeated Billy Crawford. It came down to sudden death in the third set, and Smith beat him in the final point. He then went on to beat Crawford again a half hour later in doubles with teammate Tommy Gambino ’81.

Smith, a leftie, had his one and only shutout against a player from Adelphi. Athletic Director Jack Powers ’58 was so impressed with Smith’s play those two seasons that he offered him the first tennis scholarship at Manhattan, if he would stay on to complete his M.B.A. Smith turned it down but continued to compete before going to work fulltime for Weeden & Company, based in Greenwich, Conn.
