This week, it’s James Hayes, 64, of The Epiphany School, a 124-year-old Catholic institution that is spread between three locations in the Murray Hill and Gramercy areas. Hayes details how the school has evolved in his 32 years as principal.

Q: Are you from New York?

JH: Yes, I grew up in the Bronx, went to Catholic schools in New York and Catholic high school, Catholic college. I’m a graduate of Iona College. I have my master’s degree from Manhattan College. I found [Catholic education] to be very rewarding because it taught you certain structures and skills. Catholic schools have a traditional model of being well-organized, and the expectations are very high. And, you know, the skill sets that you learn certainly bode well later on in life.

Q: Do you have any stories of a particular student you feel you’ve had the most impact on?

JH: Every school affects a certain percentage of the kids and — similar to what Father Peters did for me — gives them that defining moment that sets them off on their way. So over the years, I’ve had a number of students like that.

MANHATTAN COLLEGE TO AWARD CHARLES GARGANO ’79 WITH HONORARY DEGREE

RIVERDALE, N.Y. –– Charles A. Gargano ’79, former chairman and commissioner of Empire State Development and vice chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science at Manhattan College’s Fall Honors Convocation on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.

During the ceremony, close to 130 seniors will be recognized for their academic excellence and inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Induction into Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student.

Gargano, a New York native, earned a Master of Science in civil engineering from Manhattan College, was a member of the board of trustees and established the Ambassador Charles A. Gargano ’79 Endowed Chair in Global Economics honor in 2009. In addition, he received both his Bachelor of Science in engineering and Master of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He also holds professional engineering licenses in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Oklahoma and Vermont, and has four honorary doctorate degrees.

President Ronald Reagan named Ambassador Gargano deputy administrator of the Federal Urban Mass Transportation Administration in 1981, which began his career in public service. Thus in 1988, he was appointed ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago by President Reagan, and then re-appointed in 1989 by President Bush, where he served until 1991.

Gargano’s distinguished public service followed a successful career as an engineer and principal at J.D. Posillico Engineering and Construction, which was a company he helped build into one of Long Island’s largest heavy construction firms.

Most recently, Gargano’s vital work at Empire State Development resulted in important capital investments for New York State, including the revitalization of Times Square and the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Station. He also directed Governor Pataki’s privatization initiative that made New York the first state in the nation to privatize a commercial airport: Stewart International in the Hudson Valley.

Prior to leaving the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2007, Gargano was the governor’s key aide in carrying out interstate shipping and transportation policies. In fact, he aided in the $9 billion redevelopment investment project at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Gargano also served as president and chairman of the Columbus Citizens Foundation from 1998-2001, a New York City-based philanthropic organization dedicated to the history and culture of Italian Americans and sponsor of the Columbus Day Parade.

Taking the Helm at the Port Authority

Anyone who has ever flown into New York City, driven from Manhattan to New Jersey or taken the PATH train has benefited from the work of Peter Zipf ’79, chief engineer at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ). Zipf oversees a team of more than 1,000 employees and engineering consultants who ensure the structural integrity and construction management of the Port Authority’s design, bridges and tunnels, rail, ports and aviation projects.

Zipf, a long-time veteran of the PANYNJ who began his career as a project manager with the agency in 1985, was appointed chief engineer last November when his predecessor, Frank Lombardi, retired. Lombardi, who was the Commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient at the College’s 2007 Spring Commencement, has served as a consultant to the civil engineering department, and was recently a recipient of the Distinguished Mentor Award for his work with the College’s mentor program.

“One of my key roles is the overall delivery of design and construction for a significant portion of the capital and operating programs at the Port Authority,” Zipf says. “We typically oversee about $700 million of construction work a year.”

The Port Authority is the nation’s largest infrastructure agency, overseeing an area of approximately 1,500 square miles surrounding New York Harbor. The agency conceives, builds, operates and maintains infrastructure critical to the New York/New Jersey region, where more than 17 million people live. Facilities under PANYNJ’s jurisdiction include America’s busiest airport system, marine terminals and ports, the PATH rail transit system, six tunnels and bridges between New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the World Trade Center.

Among the long-term projects Zipf and his team are currently working on is the raising of the Bayonne Bridge, which will raise the bridge deck up 65 feet to accommodate the future larger container ships. He is also working on the replacement of the Goethals Bridge, the rebuilding of the roadways entering the Lincoln Tunnel from the New Jersey side, the planning of rebuilding the Central Terminal at LaGuardia Airport, and the planning for the rebuilding of Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport.

During the course of his 25 years with the Port Authority, Zipf has worked on numerous projects, but the redevelopment of Newark Liberty International Airport in the 1980s stands out as particularly noteworthy. This project included the construction of parking structures, a monorail system and roadway network.

“It was a challenging planning, design and construction program that I got involved with at the very beginning,” he says. “So it was great experience to see the vast array of what it means to be an engineer.”

In addition to his instrumental role at PANYNJ, Zipf is also doing his part to lead the next generation of engineers. He’s been a part of Manhattan’s mentor program and also mentors students at Polytechnic Institute of New York, where he earned his master’s degree.

He has long been ingrained in the Manhattan College community. Zipf hails from a Jasper family — his father is a class of 1940 engineering alumnus and his brother graduated in 1970 from the education school. In 2007, Zipf was inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the championship 1978 swim team. He currently holds the Manhattan diving record for the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, a record previously held by his brother.

Zipf was an outstanding student at Manhattan, graduating first in his civil engineering class with a G.P.A. of 3.96. His ascension in his career is a testament to his talent and work ethic, but he also praises Manhattan for the strong foundation he received at the College.

“Manhattan College is known for its pragmatic approach to engineering, and it clearly stands out,” Zipf says. “But what I liked about Manhattan is that it gives you the broader sense of the person, too. Taking theology classes and other non-technical classes that you don’t get at a pure technical institute really balances you, which is important for engineers today.”

Robert Rivera, retired executive secretary of the New York State Board for Radiologic Technology and a popular figure in the Capital District community, died on September 4, 2010 in Albany, N.Y. He was 63 years old.

“Good times Bobby, ” as he was affectionately known, ended his struggle with cancer at home, surrounded by his loving family and the many friends and acquaintances he made during a life filled with cultural and civic activities.

Robert Rivera was born and raised in the Bronx, N.Y. on January 7, 1947. He was raised by a strong-willed and loving single mom in the South Bronx and grew up – he liked to say – with the idea that failure was not an option in his life. In August 1964 he enlisted in the Navy and served in Vietnam aboard the USS John R. Craig. Robert was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy he met his wife Nellie, and in December 28, 1974 they exchanged vows. Together they raised three children — Ismael “Izzy,” a retired NYC police detective; Nelson, currently residing in Philadelphia and raising two children; and Camille, “baby girl” as Bobby referred to her, a licensed radiological technologist.

Robert, himself a licensed radiological technologist, was trained at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City and in 1979 graduated from Manhattan College where he earned a bachelor of science degree. He dedicated 15 years of service to the Veterans Administration Hospital before joining the NYS Dept. of Health where he served for 27 years in the Bureau of Environmental Health/Radiation Protection.

Robert retired in 2009. Robert served on the Boards of the American Cancer Society, Hispanic Outreach Services and Centro Civico of Albany. Robert also lent his support and gift for fund raising to the South American Spanish Association, Troy Boys and Girls Club, Circle of Life for Children’s Diabetes, Big Brother and Big Sister of Albany and the Back Stretch Workers of the Saratoga Racetrack. But perhaps none of these activities provided the level of satisfaction that Robert derived each Christmas when he dressed up as Santa Claus on behalf of the children of Centro Civico of Albany. His participation in the community was so extensive that his Latino friends often referred to him as “El Alcalde” — The Mayor — a title that his good friend Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings was proud to share with Robert. Robert loved music and relished moments in the limelight when he lent his raspy vocals to an onstage performance by local musicians. For a time, “Hi, This is Good Times Bobby” was heard each week over the FM airwaves when he hosted a latin music radio program in Albany. Whether dancing to a mambo, cha, cha cha or to the rhythm and blues of Motown, Bobby often made the entire dance floor his partner. Like his dancing, his enthusiasm, energy and love of life were boundless and, as his friends can attest, contagious.

Robert is survived by his devoted wife, Nelida Rivera, recently retired from the NYS Dept. of Corrections; his son, Ismael and wife, Evelyn; his son, Nelson and grandchildren, Antonio and Emily; his daughter, Camille; his sister, Belky Cruz; his brother, Ricardo “Ricky” Suarez and sister-in-law, Laura; his mother-in-law, Basilisa; brother-in-law, Manuel; grandchildren “Jay Jay” and Nelson Jr. and his nephew Carlos Suarez Jr.

Funeral services will be held Thursday 9:00 a.m. from New Comer Cannon Funeral Home at 343 New Karner Road, Colonie then to St. Madeline Sophie, Guilderland where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Calling hours will be Wednesday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Temperament is very important. I’m very level headed and people find me to have a very calm, assured demeanor.

I have close to 20 years experience with probate courts. I do wills, trust work, residential real estate work, income tax work and then probate administration. I’ve been very active in the probate courts.

About 10-15% of my work is pro bono. Probate courts need attorneys to represent people that have no ability to pay for legal services themselves. So they’ll call up attorneys and ask us if we’ll handle matters. I never decline their request. The plus side of doing that is it exposes you to work outside the normal probate work.

Mr. LaRosa is currently the CEO of G.W. LaRosa & Associates LLC, a global technology sales and business development firm. With over 30 years of experience, he has held various senior level positions at industry-leading companies including General Electric, IBM (News – Alert), and dvanced Micro Devices. In addition, Mr. LaRosa founded Lead Group International (LGI), and helped lead smaller technology companies including Silicon Graphics (SGI) and American Motion Systems.

Mr. LaRosa currently serves on the board of advisors for Silvatron Partners in Los Gatos, Calif. He is a past director for the advisory board for the Lubin School of Business at PACE University, and a former chairman of the board at LGI. He earned his Master of Business Administration from the Lubin School of Business at PACE University and has a B.S. in electrical and electronic engineering from Manhattan College in New York City.

With the addition of Mr. LaRosa, the Vitesse board consists of six members. The Company set the size of the board at six directors as part of its debt restructuring that closed on October 30, 2009.
