MEMAIL: Dave Brill confirms and adds details

Mark’s right.  Cohalan did the cartoons and a lot of the writing.

And inside the paper, there’s a long tongue-in-cheek letter from John Straub, MP ’60.

As you say, John, life is possible after getting tossed.  In my case, I worked and travelled for awhile after being expelled.  I got my degree from CCNY, and then went to Stanford for graduate school.  I spent my working years doing software R&D here in California, and I retired a few years ago.

JEMAIL: Dave Brill shares what got him tossed; First Amendment? not withstanding

2011-Dec-31

Hi again, John,

Last week, after I sent a remembrance of John Fandel, we talked about a handout that I distributed at Manhattan in 1963.  I found it after a some searching.  It’s a four-page mimeographed (pre-copier) paper called the “Undercurrent”, and I’m attaching scans.  Since the College expelled me for distributing it, I’ve also attached the dismissal letter that the Dean sent me.

This incident was uncomfortable for me and my family at the time.  But fortunately, it didn’t impact my subsequent education and career.  I guess personal information was less accessible in pre-Internet times.

Best wishes for the New Year!
Dave

Dave,

Thanks for sharing what must have been a terrible experience.

As I told you I was in the Prep at the time your hand out hit the campus. I thought my homeroom teacher, Brother Cronin, would require CPR. All the copies were collected, but not before it was read. Typical of boys, not all the copies were seized.

Upon reflection, instead of suppression, a better strategy would have been discourse. The Dead Old White Guys recognized the answer to “bad speech” was more speech. By their actions, the Administration demonstrated that they were more like the Communists than they’d admit. In my class, they were called sotto voce “Nazis”. It was great excitement for us.
Sorry that it cause you and yours such pain.

Now in 2011, I wonder what basis they had for tossing you out. Unauthorized mimeographing? Littering? As a recipient of Federal Funds both directly, through the various grants, VA students, and supportive financing arrangements for both tuition and capital projects, there could be a First Amendment Free Speech argument made.
I’m glad that you shared part of the history I remember. I’ve also shared it with my fellow Prepsters that I’m in touch with. They too remember vividly the “fun”.
While I’m sure there will be some negative reaction to hosting it, it’s part of Jasper lore. Like Jasperman, and the peace demonstrations. A part that the Administration and some alumni would prefer to forget, but it is what makes us who we are.

Dona Nobis Pacem, and I hope you and yours receive your heart’s desires in the New Year. Personally, it’s got to be better than last year.

And, let me finally say thanks for the content.

[JR: Folks that are interested. I put the attachments on the back lot due to size. If you're thin skinned or of weak faith, don't read the "Under Current" that got Dave "burned at the metaphorical stake"! But if you're like me and interested in all things Jasper, here's a item that I remember well. Probably one of the few things I remember from the Prep that didn't involve corporal punishment or denigration. I'm sympathetic about Dave's treatment because I was always on the edge of getting tossed from both the Prep and the College. Not without reason. But, humorously, I always managed to stay just to the good side of the "cliff". ]

JEMAIL: Brill, Dave (MCattendee) remembers Prof Fandel; I remember the story

Subject: Fandel RIP and photo

Hi FJohn,

Thanks for your reply. I’m glad to hear that John Fandel had other fans also. I wrote a little appreciation below, and I’m attaching a photo from one of his books, “Testament”.

Dave

——————————————————————————————

I was saddened to hear of John Fandel’s passing. Last week, I was reading something that reminded me of him. I did an online search for his name, and found quite a few items, some indicating that he was still active in his eighties. I was thinking of writing him a letter, but then saw the notice that he’d died just a few weeks ago. I wish I’d done the search earlier.

I attended Manhattan College from 1961 to 1963 and took classes from him both years. He was unequivocally the best teacher I ever had. I’d never understood what literature, especially poetry, was about (other than a high-school chore). But his insight and enthusiasm gave me a strong appreciation of writing, and of the arts in general.

In the classroom, John Fandel was more than just a lecturer. He saw his students as individuals with different concerns and aspirations. He was generous with his time, and I think many students saw him as a friend.

This was especially true in my case. In 1963, I was expelled from the College for handing out a newssheet that mildly satirized some aspects of Manhattan and the Church. I’d been summoned to a hearing conducted by the College President and other officials. To my surprise, John, on his own initiative, came and testified on my behalf (though to no avail). I’ve always been grateful for his kindness.

People sometimes say their lives were touched by one teacher in particular. For me, it was John Fandel. He opened my eyes to many possibilities. It was a privilege to know him, and may he rest in peace.

JR:

So, you’re that “Dave Brill”. Believe it or not that, I remember and read that handout. It went throught the Prep like wildfire. The Brothers went through and collected ALMOST all the copies. I vaugely remember my home room teacher “refuting it” point by point the next day. Sometimes he said “that’s a good point”. You don’t, by chance, have another copy do you? I’m active in a group of Prepsters Class of 1964 and I’m sure they get a kick reminiscing about it again. That would be a real collector’s item for us!

Unfortunately, I never met the man, John Fandel. Maybe that was good? Wonder how he felt about young soon-to-be-fat soon-to-be-old white guy injineers? We weren’t welcome up on the erudite hill. Too fixated on objective reality I was told many many times.

Thanks for sharing that story. And sparking another piece of Jasper lore. I kinda know how you must have felt. I’m not too popular with certain parts of the Administration. (They say I interfere with their fundraising.) But unlike your case, there’s not a lot they can do about me. Guess they could revoke my diploma, find a bill that I’d never paid, or conduct an exorcism.

What was that Groucho Marx line: “I would not want to join a club that would have me as a member.”?

I can’t imagine the suffering that they inflicted on you for a few words? No matter how blasphemous.

Dona Nobis Pacem

Andrew Paretti Jr., World War II veteran and Fox Point resident, shares his experiences.

Andrew Paretti Jr. is an 86-year-old World War II veteran, and he doesn’t think he’s a hero. Nor did he want to go on an Honor Flight when his friend, John Young, a retired Navy captain he met in the Navy League, first suggested it.

“Those are for the heroes,” he said. Still, Reid persisted for three years, and finally accompanied Paretti as a guardian on a Stars and Stripes Honor Flight two weeks ago to see the National World War II memorial.

Paretti was only 20 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was in Manhattan College in New York City, his hometown, and could have finished his degree in another semester if he chose. But Paretti’s “old man” was in the Navy in World War I, and so following his sense of duty, “I figured I better get in there,” he said. He left for the war at the end of 1944.

MOBIT: Formel, Phillip A. [MCattendee RIP]

Phillip Formel (1923 – 2011) | Visit Guest Book

LENOX – Phillip A. Formel, the patriarch of the Formel family in Berkshire County, and a well-known general contractor, passed away at his home in Lenox on Thursday, March 17th, 2011.

Phillip Adrian Formel was born January 28th, 1923, in Pittsfield, son of Fernando Augustus Formel and Lillian Smithson Formel. His father died when Phillip was just 4 years old, and he was raised by his mother, Lillian. He was a devout Roman Catholic and worshipped at St Mark’s church where he was an altar boy for many years. He attended Pittsfield Public Elementary schools, and St. Joseph High School, where he was quarterback on the football team and graduated in 1941. Despite a burning desire to better himself, he had little hope of attending college because of financial reasons, and began working at the GE immediately after graduating. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Horse Cavalry, which still existed at the start of the War. As a boy, he had worked on horse farms and as a goalie judge for the local Pittsfield Horse Polo team, which explained his interest in the Horse Cavalry. Shortly after he joined the Calvary, it was disbanded and he was reassigned to the Army Postal Service in Alaska. His duties there kept him on the road for many days at a time as a liaison to the outlying post offices, and he was full of stories about traveling through what at that time was really a frontier. He was accepted into the Army Engineering school and attended Texas A&M, Manhattan College and Siena College, until the engineering program was abandoned and he was assigned to the 69th Infantry and was shipped to England in 1944. From England he was sent to France during the Battle of the Bulge, and from there pushed continuously through France, Belgium and Germany, participating, in amongst others, the Battle for Liepzig. He was proud of his service, and thankful for and took advantage of the opportunity to go to college after the War.

Upon returning to the states, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Haskins, beginning a lifelong love affair, and they moved to Lansing, MI, where he graduated from Michigan State as a Mechanical Engineer, in 1950. The young couple moved back to the Berkshires and had a house built on Barker Road in Pittsfield, where they began their family, which produced 15 children.

After a short stint with National Radiator, and several years with Pittsfield General Electric, he began, with his cousin, a General Construction firm, based in Pittsfield. His projects were generally highly technical industrial jobs. In 1959, the company moved to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, where he built a nuclear test reactor at the University of Mayaguez, and a salt water reactor for the government in Rincon. He returned to the United States in 1960, bought out his cousin, and built a construction and metal fabrication yard in Housatonic in 1962. During this time, he took on the civic duty of being the Building Inspector in Lenox, and put the town’s building code in place.

He kept close ties with Puerto Rico, and in 1974, again moved to Puerto Rico and continued his construction business there, performing primarily industrial and commercial construction. In 1981, together with some of his children, he began an interisland Maritime Shipping firm, owning and operating his own cargo ships. He left Puerto Rico in 1995 and returned to Lenox where he built two houses for himself and a number of condominiums in Lenox, as light work during his “retirement” years. He also had a house built in Homestead, Fla. where he and Norma resided.

He was a devout communicant at St Ann’s Church in Lenox.

He was a brilliant, loving and serious man, and left a large footprint on our Earth. He will be missed by all who had the chance to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Haskins Formel of Lenox, his 15 children, Michael Albert of Columbus, MS, Stephen Fernando of Claverack, NY, Phillip A. Jr. of Homestead, FL, Eugenie Formel of Becket, Shaun Joseph of Searcy, AR, Ann Frances Formel of North Chatham, NY, Mark Anselm of Great Barrington, Norma Frances Formel of York, PA, Kristina Marie Burkhart of Averill Park, NY, Brian Damian of Great Barrington, Richard Murray of Gainesville, FL, Paul Gilbert of Geneva, FL, Mary Formel Woodger of Stockbridge, Fernanda Meagher of Piedmont, CA, and Matthew James Joseph of New Orleans, LA.; 60 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and his four siblings, Eugenie Phillips of Pittsfield, Dr. Paul Formel of Albany, NY, John Formel of Chicago, Il, and Robert Formel of Peachtree, GA.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Monday morning at 10 am from the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 1-4.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Formel’s memory may be made to the Massachusetts Audubon Society in care of the funeral home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.
