Alpha Phi Delta Returns to MC
In 1914, 7 men took an oath to become members of the Alpha Phi Delta, a Fraternity based on Italian heritage. Coincidentally, last fall, 7 MC students took the same oath to reinitiate the Beta Beta Chapter of the fraternity on MC’s campus. President of the Fraternity, Jeffrey Sidoti, is proud to be part of the only National Fraternity on campus.

Michael Phelps Set to Pay Hefty Price

We all know that Olympian Michael Phelps can swim as well as a fish. Phelps however may not have expected to live in a fishbowl, even after the iconic 2008 Beijing games where the legend won 8 gold medals. Being one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, it probably was not a good idea for Phelps to take a hit from a bong earlier this month.

As the search for MC’s 19th president winds down – complete with a visit from presidential candidate Dr. Brennan O’Donnell – students are growing unhappy with their lack of involvement in the process. O’Donnell, who visited campus on Jan. 28, was approved unanimously by the search committee, but awaits final approval.

Several colleges and universities are named after cities other than the one where they are located (typically because they moved within the same metropolitan area):

{Extraneous Deleted}

   * Manhattan College is located not in Manhattan but rather in Bronxville, New York (a town whose name is itself something of a misnomer because it is not part of The Bronx).

   * Manhattanville College is located in Purchase, New York (not far from Bronxville) and not in the Manhattanville neighborhood in Manhattan.

JHQ: Best-Selling Author And Journalist Hooman Majd To Speak 2/19

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/013009_1.shtml

January 30, 2009
Best-Selling Author And Journalist Hooman Majd To Speak At Manhattan College
Acclaimed author is a new voice on one of America’s top foreign policy concerns.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Best-selling author and journalist Hooman Majd, a new voice on Iran, one of the United States’ top foreign policy concerns, will speak at Manhattan College on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the William J. Scala Academy Room of Leo Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

A resident of New York City, Majd is the author of The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, a New York Times best-seller. The book, which spent time as the No. 1 foreign policy book and the No. 1 book on Islam on Amazon.com, is a critical but affectionate portrait of Iranian politics and culture. It attempts to explain Iran’s history and quirks to Western observers.

Born in Iran and raised and educated in the U.S., Majd continues to travel frequently between the two countries. The son of an Iranian diplomat and the grandson of an eminent Ayatollah, he has worked as an advisor and translator for two Iranian Presidents, Mohammad Khatami and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on their trips to the U.S. and the United Nations.

Majd writes for several publications, including Time, The New Yorker and GQ. He is a writer and contributing editor for Interview and was an original blogger at The Huffington Post, for which he continues to write. He also served as executive vice president of Island Records and is the co-founder of Palm Pictures.

For more information about this event, please contact Dr. Pamela Chasek, director of Manhattan’s international studies program, at (718) 862-7248 or e-mail pamela.chasek@manhattan.edu.
