STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Royal B. Blaine, 89, of New Dorp, a lifelong Staten Islander and proud World War II veteran, died Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.

Born on Staten Island, Mr. Blaine lived in Castleton Corners before moving to New Dorp 40 years ago.

After graduating from St. Peter’s Boys High School in New Brighton, he attended Manhattan College.

Mr. Blaine worked as a banker for Chemical Bank in Manhattan, retiring in 1983.

A highly decorated World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Marines and was a member of the Marine Corps League. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

A member of the Art Students League, he was an avid artist who painted, drew and sculpted, and his work has been displayed in exhibits on and off Staten Island. He also enjoyed playing the piano and dining out.

“An Iwo Jima survivor, who died on Independence Day, he fought gallantly for his country and was a proud veteran,” said his daughter, Allison Hughes. She also noted how she and her father took a painting class together, in which Tony Bennett was a student as well.

“Mr. Blaine was a very talented painter and portrait specialists and his office was filled with impressive canvasses of random co-workers that agreed to pose for him in their free time,” said Ann Esther Sprizzo, a longtime family friend. “He was a lovely, gentle-hearted person who was beloved by all who made his acquaintance.”

His son, Jeffrey, died in 1953.

In addition to his daughter, Allison, surviving are his companion of 43 years, Maria Conti; two sons, Steven and Matthew; three more daughters, Donnie Giordano, Annesther Hatzipetros and Johnna Bolka; a sister, Lee, and eight grandchildren.

The Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, is handling the arrangements, which includes a mass at 10:45 a.m. on Monday in St. Teresa’s R.C. Church in Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.
