Joseph G. Cleary, P.E., BCEE, is a principal environmental engineer based in Paramus, New Jersey with over 42 years experience, primarily in industrial wastewater, water reuse, waste to energy, and groundwater remediation.

Joe specializes in industrial wastewater treatment and his primary clientele are in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and beverage, distillery, and pulp and paper industries. His areas of expertise includes: upfront planning and feasibility studies to develop best technical solution , treatability and pilot studies, process development and modeling, engineering design, construction management, design and build, and operation and maintenance, troubleshooting and training services. He has worked on industrial wastewater projects in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, and China.

He continues to advance the state of the practice by both leading and participating in industrial workshops at WEFTEC, New Jersey Water Environment Association (NJWEA), the Merck Symposium, and at leading universities. He has held Chair positions at the Water Environment Federation’s Industrial Wastewater Committee and the Microconstituents Community of Practice. Joe has delivered over fifty papers and presentations at various conferences and co-authored “Activated Sludge Technologies for Treating Industrial Wastewaters – Design and Troubleshooting” with W. Wes Eckenfelder, Jr.

In 2012, Joe received the Water Environment Federation (WEF) Industrial Water Quality Lifetime Achievement Award and the Heukelekian Award for Outstanding Contribution in Industrial Waste Control from the NJWEA in 2009. He is a registered professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico and is Board Certified Environmental Engineer by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. (AAEE).
