Chambersburg

Robert (Bob) Michael Suarez, 76, of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully in the early hours at Manor Care, Chambersburg on November 1, 2016 from complications of Alzheimer’s.

Robert was born on May 7, 1940 in New York City, NY, to Benigno and Digna Suarez, originally from Perlora, Asturias, Spain. He was a 1958 graduate of St. Agnes High School and a 1963 graduate of Manhattan College, both in New York City (NYC). He had started his graduate studies at Fordham University, NYC, when his ROTC commission to the U.S. Air Force was activated in 1965. He received his MS in International Relations from Troy State University in 1983 while stationed in Germany.

Bob spent 25 years as an intelligence officer in the Air Force. He had tours of duty at Goodfellow AFB, TX, Myrtle Beach, SC, Udorn, Thailand, Washington, DC, Omaha, NE; and Zweibrucken and Ramstein, Germany. He met and married his wife, Judith (Judy) K. Schroeder, at Zweibrucken Air Base on January 22, 1977. Both he and Judy jointly retired from the Air Force on September, 30 1990 as Lieutenant Colonels.

He was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal with one device, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with one device, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Short-Term Ribbon, Air Force Long-Term Ribbon with one device, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with five devices, Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with one device, and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.

Following his military service, he was employed by the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) as a contractor supporting the Department of Defense from October 1990 through May 2005, when he retired to St. Thomas.

Bob loved reading, photography, traveling, collecting books, coins, and stamps.He was an excellent chef, learning the basics working in his father’s luncheonette in NYC.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Benigno and Digna Suarez, of New York City, NY. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Judy; his brother, Alfred, of Bay Shore, NY; and his sister, Diana Barbas, of New City, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association , 2595 Interstate Drive, Suite 100, Harrisburg, Pa 1711
