James Dwyer Jr.
1940 – 2017
James J. Dwyer Jr. was born in Queens, N.Y. on February 20, 1940 to James J. Dwyer Sr., former Commissioner of Public Safety for the City of White Plains, and Gertrude Kirk Dwyer. He grew up in Baldwinsville, New York and later moved to White Plains, NY, where he graduated from Stepinac High School in 1957. He attended Manhattan College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, after which he earned an MBA at Iona College.
James joined the Navy in 1962 and served as a Lieutenant JG on the USS Harlan R. Dickson during the Cuban Blockade. He was discharged with honor in 1965 and went on to study computer programming at the Programming and Systems Institute in Manhattan. Jim made a career as a programmer and programmer analyst at Nestle, eventually becoming a systems project leader, and retiring in 1995. After his first retirement, he worked at Cap Gemini on Y2K programming as an expert in COBOL and later went on to work for Westchester County until shortly before his passing.
Jim had a passion for service. He served as a ScoutMaster for Boy Scout Troop 17 and he was a member of the New York Guard, the White Plains Fire Patrol and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. He proudly served as Post Commander of the American Legion Post 135 and after relinquishing the post of Commander, Jim served as treasurer.
Jim’s most cherished accomplishment was marrying his devoted wife Janice Meeker 50 years ago in 1966 and being the proud father of his three prized children Cathleen, James, and Edward.
James is predeceased by his brother William, and is survived by his faithful wife Janice, his brother Dennis, sister Teresita, as well as his loving children Cathleen, James, and Edward.
