Plenty is changing when it comes to transportation.
From driverless cars to high-speed commuter rail to massive infrastructure investment under President-elect Donald Trump, how Americans get from point A to point B could soon look a lot different.
Here in the Lower Hudson Valley, there’s a lot to keep an eye on — from the nearly complete new Tappan Zee Bridge to Metro-North and the Westchester County Airport. It all means 2017 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for transportation in Westchester and Rockland counties.
On the beat
At some yet-to-be specified point in 2017, the new Tappan Zee Bridge will reach its biggest milestone yet: One of the $3.9 billion project’s two spans will open to traffic, initially carrying cars going in both directions. At that point, the old bridge will be shut down.
The new bridge is undoubtedly the biggest, and certainly most visible, transportation project in the state and possibly the country. When all is said and done, the new bridge is expected to connect Westchester and Rockland counties without the need for major structural repairs for the next 100 years.
