CATHERINE MULLALLY: Doing little things with a big heart

A life lived with such a joyful spirit, and such kindness and care for all
Published on March 22, 2017

Some people in our lives go quietly about doing a lot of good. They are unassuming, modest, and humble. Such a person was Sheila Dunphy, a pioneer in lay pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Charlottetown, who passed away recently after living with cancer for many years.

It is true that Sheila would be the last to paint herself as larger than life. But many Islanders, with fondness and gratitude, would be pleased to recall this kind, caring, loving person and all the good that she did.

In her ministry, Sheila visited the sick, taught catechism and trained catechism teachers, prepared children and adults to receive the sacraments, led groups to console the grieving, supported women’s shelters and worked at the Soup Kitchen. She was a spiritual guide, a prayer companion, and a leader in scripture study. She worked with people inside and outside of the church.

Fr. Keith Kennific, another former pastor at St. Pius X, recalls: “Sheila had many gifts. She was both well-educated in religious education and theology, with a graduate degree from Manhattan College in New York City, in addition to formal training in Ignatian spirituality. She possessed a profound and simple faith, which she unabashedly shared with everyone.”

John, the obit below is about Sheila Dunphy, not Catherine Mullallay.  See, someone really does read your “jottings.”

Best regards,
Rich Ferrara

Wow I really screwed that one up. And, I read it several times trying to figure out the graduation date. Looking for a tree when I should have see the forest. Really losing it!

Dear John,

(I did as well!). I believe that Sheila is a member of theClass of 1972.

           May She Rest In Peace.
