On Sunday, August 27, 2017 death came to Walter Van Gieson at age 95.
A resident of Annapolis, MD since 2001, Walter was born in New York City and was raised in The North Bronx. He attended public elementary and high schools in the Bronx and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Manhattan College School of Engineering.
In Sept. of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, became a radio operator/mechanic in the Air Commandos and served in the China Burma India Theater during World War II. He married Joan Frances Rogers in 1949.
Walter was a pioneer in radio, television and digital communications. Starting in 1949 until his death he was an active, licensed amateur radio operator and held a Professional Engineer’s license since 1959. Walter was employed as an engineer by the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in their television operations beginning in 1948. In 1959 he joined the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) research and development group where he contributed to the development of such technologies as digital signal transmission, computer generated speech, speech recognition and secure digital communications systems (Token Ring).
Walter volunteered as a scout leader, fund raiser for special needs children via the Knights of Columbus and the Exchange Club, and as a mentor to middle school students, mostly children of recent immigrants, helping them with their science and math homework.
Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan Van Gieson; his children, Joseph, Deborah, Peter, David and John; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 31 at St. Jon Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be made at: KalasFuneralHomes.com
