John T. Costello, 84, died peacefully at his home in Nanuet, NY on December 5, 2017 with his family by his side.
John was born on March 29, 1933 in Yonkers, NY to Anna Bartley Costello and John Costello. John is survived by his wife, Ann, of 61 years and their five children: John Jr. (Joanne), James (Janet), Maryann Rossi (Michael), Eileen Boland, and Joseph (Joyce). In addition, John leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 4 great granddaughters. He is also survived by his sister in laws, Margaret Drohan, Margaret Costello and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Diane, brother Robert and beloved son in law, Daniel Boland.
John was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, earned a BS from Manhattan College and his MA and Administration degrees from NYU.
John began his career in education at Sacred Heart High School. He went on to Hastings on the Hudson High School where he mentored for 31 years as Athletic Director, physical education teacher and boys’ basketball coach. He retired from Hastings High School in1991. He came out of retirement to coach the Dobbs Ferry High School varsity boys’ basketball team. Between the two schools he amassed a total of 457 victories. John was inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame, Westchester County Hall of Fame and the Hastings High School Hall of Fame.
John was a devout Catholic and a parishioner for 59 years of St. Anthony’s Church in Nanuet. His faith and family were of primary importance to him along with his former ball players, Century Club Golf Group (which he founded) and his Arthur Avenue Luncheon Group. John’s passing has truly left a void for his family and friends.
Visitation will be at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, 728 West Nyack Road, West Nyack, NY on Sunday, December 10, 2017 during the hours of 2 PM until 8 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday, December 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, 36 West Nyack Road, Nanuet, NY. Burial will be at the St. Anthony’s cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has asked for contributions to be made to United Hospice of Rockland.
