Nearly 300 members of the Clarkstown South High School community will come together this weekend to help a former star athlete.

On Saturday, the annual Tommy McGuire Turkey Bowl, a double-elimination flag football tournament, will be held at the Clarkstown South football field.

Now in its second year, the fundraiser aims to assist McGuire, a 2011 Clarkstown South graduate, and his family with medical costs.

McGuire, 24, suffered a severe spinal cord injury after a June 2016 accident in a swimming pool.

After being discharged from Helen Hayes Hospital in November 2016, McGuire is on the mend. He now gets around through use of a wheelchair and is in outpatient physical therapy sessions five days a week.

“I‘m working hard to get more mobility in my upper body,” McGuire said.

This Saturday, spectators can come cheer on 26 teams of students and alumni vying for the Turkey Bowl trophy. Besides refreshments, game-goers can buy tickets for raffle items including Rangers tickets, Giants tickets and local restaurant gift certificates.

Afterward, a post-game celebration will be held at the Lexington Grille and Pub. For $10, party-goers get one drink and access to an all-you-can-eat buffet. Also, the fundraiser‘s organizers have made arrangements with Uber to give party-goers discounted rides home.

McGuire plans to be at both events.
