COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) says DJT45’s remarks were racist

In your recent endnote you wrote that DJT only said what everybody thinks about many countries in the developing world. The coarsening of the language in the public utterances of the POTUS is one issue. But since this was in the course of a discussion about immigration, the more appaling thing was his implication, that because the people would be coming from impoverished circumstances, they couldn’t possibly have anything to contribute to our country. He wouldn’t say the same about the WHITE people from poor circumstances in the Appalachia described in your post. It is hard to escape the racist implication of his comment – regardless of the classless way he expressed it.

Toner, Mike (MC1972)

[JR: I don’t know what DJT45 would say about “white Appalachia” but it would qualify in my mind as a “gurry hole”.  I don’t see it as “racist”, but “realistic”. Classless? I don’t agree. It’s time to call it as it is; not in some “classy” way that conceals how terrible those conditions are. And that our welfare / warfare Gooferment doesn’t care about the victims. As far as contribution, if we took welfare off the table for “immigrants”, then we wouldn’t have this discussion. As I sad, we need “makers; not takers”.]
