COMMENT: Toner, Mike (MC1972) about Presidential parallels

Dear F. John,

I read your recent endnote about the Weimar Republic and gun control almost immediately after seeing the movie, The Post, about the publication of the Pentagon Papers. First, the reminder of the lies and obfuscation – from Truman through Nixon – that led to the full blown war that so seared our generation and killed so many of our contemporaries was very anger and sadness provoking. Perhaps even more frightening were the eerie parallels between Nixon and Trump about demonizing the free press and thinking that the best course was to attempt to suppress the press.

[JR: Well, I view the “Presidents” as threat to freedom in the USA. And, like the ersatz anti-war movement, the “press” is not free but a captive of the ultra-left wing of the “democratic” party with the exception of Fox News. Fox News is an anomaly, but is an organ of “big Gooferment” too. Hollywood is an extension of the same ultra-left group think imho. Thankfully, the inet allows bypassing the “echo chambers”.  Nixon and Trump are not the worst; as bad as they might be. It takes real “work” to break into my personal “worst” list. I think DJT45 is exposing the “Deep State”, the corrupt media, and Democan/Republicrat politicians for what they really are — wanna be tyrants who are parasites on the hard working “We, The Sheeple”. Sadly, I don’t think “We, The Sheeple” are smart enough to escape the chains that politicians and bureaucrats have forged on them by decades of “free stuff”. It would seem that hard times are inevitable for the “American Experiment”. Thanks for the response; it gets lonely in my “ivory tower”.]
