According to both Stanford University and the investigatory web site, Snopes, the story of Stanford’s founding after Leland Stanford and his wife were rebuffed by Harvard is not true. Stanford, a prominent railroad industrialist – think one of the drivers of the ‘golden spike’ completing the transcontinental railroad – would have been way too well known and his only son died at 15, before he would have attended Harvard. So a nice parable – but not a true story.
PS – Today (6/16/18) attended the wedding of soon to be (Dec 2018) Jasper graduate, Michael Giraldo and his beautiful bride, Gretchen Bauer – an RIT engineer. An amazing wedding – with best wishes to all. BTW, Michael also holds a leadership position with alma mater’s student veterans organization.
[JR: Well, I’d NEVER credit Snopes as “an investigatory web site” under any circumstances. Too much bias. But it IS a nice “parable”; like loaves and fishes. Or an “honest politician” or “jumbo shrimp.”]
