CHESTERTOWN — Edward J. Schutta, MD, 85, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 at his home.
Born Jan. 10, 1933 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Francis and Dorothy (Kelly) Schutta. Ed served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in Fort Hood, Texas from 1961 to 1963. He graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelors of Science degree and from Downstate Medical School with a Doctor of Medicine. He did a fellowship with Dr. Carlo Valente studying genetics. He trained genetic counselors for Sarah Lawrence College. His hobbies included golfing, he was known as ‘Straight ahead Ed,’ fishing in the back woods, reading about WWII history, puzzles and the New York Giants. He was past president of the Home School Association at St. Helen’s Catholic School in Howard Beach. He was a lector at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church for many years. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Gregory Schutta; one brother, Francis Schutta; three sisters, Patricia Schade, Dolores Burke and Regina Schutta. 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carmela ‘Millie’ (Curatelli) Schutta of Chestertown, whom he married June 21, 1958; two sons, Edward Schutta of Mystic, Connecticut and Christopher (Leigh Ann Clark) Schutta of Clinton, Connecticut; one daughter, Donna (Charles) Boss of Queensbury; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Schutta of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey; one brother, Joseph (Carol) Schutta of Malverne; two grandsons, Jeffrey and Tyler Boss; and one granddaughter, Alexandra Schutta.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, Chestertown, with Rev. John O’Kane, Pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass. Interment will be in the spring at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
