PRAYERSREQUESTED: Colon, Philip J. (MC1962) prays for Robert P. ‘Bob’ Otten ’55 BS

2019-Jul-29

Good Afternoon All,

On Saturday, July 27, 2019, Mike McEneney, received a call from Bob Otten whom many of us know. Bob was calling to say goodbye because he was informed by his Doctors that he has a hole in his heart that is inoperable and that his days are numbered.

True to Bob’s way, he confronted the problem and began to deal with it. He has shared that his days are short but his outlook is positive. Bob is in hospital at this time but will shortly be transferred to another institution.

Many of us know that Bob and Junius Kellogg were Classmates, roommates and good Friends at Manhattan and after Graduation. Yes, Basketball, was a bond but the real bond was their friendship. After Junnie’s accident, Bob was his Advocate, Financial Advisor and supporter in so many ways.

Bob, is a man with a big and giving heart who has helped so many. The several times I have met Bob, I have always felt I was in the presence of a truly good man. Please raise the volume for this good Man, his Wife Rebecca, their Children, Barbara, Christine, Robert, Derek and Justin during this difficult time. We pray that Bob’s days are comfortable, full of love and wonderful memories.

Thank you Bob for being you. God Bless.

From Jane :

Life has been an emotional rollercoaster these last couple of weeks. We have recently found out that the cancer has now made it to his calf muscle. As you know, Dave has been on his new chemo regimen. He’s successfully handled four rounds so far so a pet scan was in order. He has his infusion on day one and is sent home with a pump for two more.

Anyone who has been involved with cancer knows the terrible waiting period from scan to results. I think this is absolutely the hardest part for me. As a planner, I’m always dreaming of the best but bracing myself for the worst.

Last week Dave had chest pains in the middle of the night. This was new to us and very very frightening to say the least. Dave adamantly refused to allow me to call for help. Ughh, you are caught between calling 911 and respecting his wishes. We silently waited it out and called the doctor in the am. I think it was the longest night that I’ve had in a very long time trying to sleep with my hand on his chest just to make sure he was still breathing. Thank goodness it subsided and in the end the doctor felt it was not his heart… (I tend to disagree, but what would I know?).

Let it be known, if there should be a next time, there will be no hesitation on my part to call for help. This week brought vomit one day and severe kidney pain another. Thank goodness we were scheduled for a doctor routine visit the morning the kidney pain transpired. The good news is that the chemo is creating a slight change for the better in the tumors, holding it at bay. This allows him to continue with the chemo. As for the kidney pain, they couldn’t see a blockage or a change in the stent placement but decided that the stent should be removed. That was taken care of today so now we wait and see how he fares.

Dave is the most determined person that I know which absolutely works to our benefit. On a more positive note, we made it to NY for our nephew Jeff and Laura’s wedding! What a wonderful day it was. Family time always soothes the soul!

To top that, the most fantastic news in our world is that Brittany and Alex got engaged last weekend!!! Hooray!!! Dave so wants to be able to walk her down the aisle! Very, very cool!

Our hearts are full! Please keep praying for him.
