James P. McCaffery

Briarcliff Manor – James P. McCaffery, of Briarcliff Manor, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, February 9th.

Jim was born in Yonkers to Neil and Elizabeth McCaffery and grew up with his siblings Edward and Mary. He attended St. Dennis school and then went to high school at Sacred Heart. He enjoyed playing basketball, stick ball in the streets with buddies and going to the New Jersey shore with his family.

After graduating from Manhattan College with a degree in Accounting, Jim served with honor in the US Army and served his country in Vietnam. After his return, he married Siegrun and eventually settled in Briarcliff Manor where their family grew to include their children Karen, Patty and Michael.

Jim was a CPA and an audit partner in Grant Thornton LLP. A long time parishioner of St. Theresa Church, he attended 7:45 Mass every Sunday.

After he retired, Jim’s most favorite time was spent playing golf and spending time with his 11 grandchildren.

James is survived by his wife Siegrun, his brother Edward McCaffery and sister Mary Schlichtig. He is cherished by his children Karen and husband Doug, Patty and husband Bill, and Michael and wife Suzanne. He is loved by his 11 grandchildren Katie, Julie, Emily, Lizzie, Jack, Tori, Ryan, Allie, Caroline, Sean and Lauren.

Reposing, Waterbury & Kelly Funeral Home on Monday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Funeral Mass, St. Theresa’s Church, Briarcliff Manor, NY on Tuesday 10 AM. Entombment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House.

Thomas D. Smith, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017 in Allendale, NJ.

Born in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Manhattan College with a BS and an MBA. He served in the Army National Guard for 6 years. Tom spent his career as a CPA and Tax Manager in NYC.

Tom lived in Allendale for the past 47 years and was an active parishioner of Guardian Angel parish, an active member of the Holiday Observers and served on the Allendale Town Council.

Tom is survived by his wife Maryanne, his son Thomas and his wife Beth, his daughter Sara Carolan and her husband Tom and five grandchildren-Maggie, Teddy, Bridget, Anna and Tess.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave, Ramsey, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 10 AM at Guardian Angel R.C. Church in Allendale, NJ. Interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah, NJ. Southbury, CT – On December 10th, 2017, Timothy J. Murphy, D.D.S., husband, partner-in-life and best friend of Patricia Gray, devoted and loving father of Charles G. Murphy, M.D., son of Timothy and Lillian Murphy and brother of Dennis Murphy and the deceased John Murphy.

Tim was a man of keen intellect and a few words, always well chosen and always positive. His sense of humor and his wit were unfailing, as was his commitment to the causes he pursued. He was graduated from Manhattan College and then New York University School of Dentistry, after winning a New York State Regents Dental Scholarship. He went on to become certified in Prosthodontics. He served our country as a Captain in the U. S. Army Dental Corps and was awarded a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare for Prosthodontics.

He will be sorely missed by his family, his colleagues and patients and all those privileged to call him friend. He died like he lived, a friend to all.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 13th, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Resurrection, Rye, NY. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. The family will greet loved ones from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00pm on Tuesday, December 12th at Graham Funeral Home, Rye, NY.

AGE: 85 • Lincroft

Brother Christian Edward Martin, F.S.C., 85, of Lincroft died on September 27, 2017. He was born in Washington, D.C. and received the Holy Habit of the Christian Brothers on September 7, 1950.
Brother Edward was a graduate of Catholic University, Washington, D.C. and earned a Master of Arts Degree in mathematics from Manhattan College and a Master of Arts Degree in chemistry from Kansas State College.

His assignments included St. Augustine School, Bronx, N.Y., Good Shepherd School, New York City, St. Jerome’s School and St. John’s School, both of Bronx, N.Y., Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft where he served as director of the community, La Salle Academy, New York City, and St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Buffalo, N.Y. where he served as director. He has been in residence at Christian Brothers Academy since 2007 serving as a volunteer at De La Salle Hall.

The viewing will be held at the Christian Brother Academy Residence, 854 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft on Friday from 9:00 to 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.

AGE: 76 • Atlantic Highlands

Paul Frank Mercadante, age 76, of Atlantic Highlands lost his 16 year battle with Parkinson’s on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Monmouth Medical Center of Long Branch, NJ. Mr. Mercadante was born in Yonkers , NY and lived most of his life in Atlantic Highlands.

He graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and from Stevens Institute of Technology with a Masters Degree in Mathematics.

He served his country honorably in the National Guard. He retired from AT&T as a Systems Analyst in 1999. Prior to working at AT&T, he worked at Bell Labs as a Program Analyst and Corning Glass Works as a Statistician.

Paul loved fishing especially in Highland Lakes, NJ where he won numerous fishing contests – much like Paul, the fish can now rest easy. He was also blessed with being a lifelong Yankees fan and tortured by being a long-suffering Detroit Lions fan. He was a parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

He is predeceased by His Brother Salvatore Mercadante and His Sister Domenica (“Margie”) Grippo. He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Patricia Mercadante; His Son David (spouse Misao) and Daughter Dawn; 3 granddaughters Tira, Maya, and Ella, and a Brother Michael Mercadante.

The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Friday, July 14 at St. Agnes Church, 103 Center Ave, Atlantic Highlands, NJ. The cremation services will be private.

Calling hours will be Thursday, July 13 from 04:00pm-07:00pm at John P. Condon Funeral Home LLC, 804 St. Hwy. #36, Leonardo, NJ.

Obituary

Stephen J. Kosar, Jr., a lifelong Yonkers resident, died on Friday February 10, 2017 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital. He was 81 years old.

He was born on December 17, 1935 to Stephen J. and Dorothy Carson Kosar in Yonkers where he was raised and educated, graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1954. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Manhattan College in 1962. Mr. Kosar was a financial officer at U.S. Life Insurance Company in Neptune, N.J. for thirty three years prior to his retirement.

He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and more recently of Christ the King Church. On August 18, 1956, he married his loving wife, Mary F. Spruck in Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Mrs. Kosar survives and lives in Yonkers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephen L. Kosar and his wife Sue and John M. Kosar. He is also survived by two grandsons, Michael S. Kosar and his wife Natalie and Joseph S. Kosar (Kim) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Catherine Knoblock.

Visiting Hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Monday 4-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the former Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Tuesday February 14th at 10:30am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
